40#1Fan 0 Report post Posted October 5, 2009 By Ansar Khan October 05, 2009, 12:57PM DETROIT -- Update from Monday's practice: Center Darren Helm continues to practice and participate in battling drills but his status for Thursday's game against Chicago is questionable. Helm has been out since Sept. 14 with a sprained AC joint (shoulder). On defense, Derek Meech will replace Brett Lebda, who struggled the first two games, posting a minus-3 rating and getting benched during the third period of Saturday's 5-3 loss to the Blues. Other than that, no changes to the line combinations in practice: Franzen-Datsyuk-Holmstrom Bertuzzi-Zetterberg-Cleary (Helm working in) Leino-Filppula-Williams Draper-Abdelkader-Maltby (Eaves working in) Lidstrom-Rafalski Kronwall-Stuart Ericsson-Meech Lebda Osgood Howard http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/20...able_for_t.html

Agreed. Also hope Helm will be able to play. Love watching that kid skate. Would also like to see Leino moved up to the 1st or 2nd line a few times this year. See what he can do. Dimaline312000 51 Report post Posted October 5, 2009 I definetly want to see Eaves worked into the line-up soon. If Helm needs more time than there is no need to rush him back in as long as Abs is filling the void well than let Helm be 100% before he is put in a actual game situation. Finnish Wing 110 Report post Posted October 5, 2009 (edited) Holmstrom should be CUT. Forget about scratching him. Cut him. Helm in, Holmstrom out. We got it already. No need to post again and again if you don't have anything else to say. It's just funny how blind or stupid you are if you think Homer is the reason for our problems. Seems like the LGW has many guys like you here, crying about enforcers, Ozzie or bad PK in every post they write. I'm begining to hate some of these players taking up roster space while there are sooo many BETTER options!

Abdelkader, Filppula, Helm, Leino, Tatar, etc. We've got talent, but we choose to let Ninety-Sux chew up ice time. It was old last year. Now it's just annoying. Casey 145 Report post Posted October 6, 2009 Exactly! Abdelkader, Filppula, Helm, Leino, Tatar, etc. We've got talent, but we choose to let Ninety-Sux chew up ice time. It was old last year. Now it's just annoying. I'm looking for the big net presence in your list... Holmstrom is 6', 210#. The others on your list are 6'2" 203#, 6' 189#, 6' 182#, 6' 182, and 5'11" 186#, respectively. Abdelkader is 2 inches taller and 7 pounds lighter- not as strong a body for screening/taking shots. Close weight, spread over a good bit more height. Filppula is 21 pounds lighter, a lot of it muscle. Heck of a passer, not a net presence. Helm and Leino are both 28 pounds lighter. Both great shooters with speed, but not power forward types. Tatar. Shorter, lighter, less mature. Where's your replacement, again?
Hiei 192 Report post Posted October 6, 2009 Darren Helm is a STUD. Abdelkader needs to step it up Lebda is a skating pylon. Bench him.

Hack & Whack Rule! 160 Report post Posted October 6, 2009 "Net Presence" ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Holmstrom is anything BUT net presence during 5 on 5 play. He's 2 seconds behind the play. I'm sensing you don't like Homer...He's got his uses and he's got his faults. What he doesn't have is a reason for showing up so much in a thread titled "Darren Helm questionable for Thursday's game". I hope Helm is well on his way to being 100%, he's a definite force on the ice. Get well Darren.

Ive got to agree with you here. He doesnt set up plays in the zone, isnt very good defensively, and by the time he gets his ass in front of the net, Dats or Franzen have lost the puck already. Zetts 236 Report post Posted October 6, 2009 (edited) I really think that Jake Ryan's incessant whining about Holmstrom is starting to affect other people. He was seriously injured throughout last year, and was marginally effective. He's been a great player for us. He's been ok in the first two games, especially when you take into account that most of the team has played poorly. I wonder if I complained about Lidstrom in every one of my posts (even when it's completely irrelevant to the topic) I could sway some people to believe that he's garbage. Lord, if you say anything enough on these boards... Edit: I do, obviously, admit that he's lost a step. But he's not nearly as terrible as he's being made out to be. The bashing is way over the top. deetroit dario 27 Report post Posted October 6, 2009 Holmstrom should be CUT. Forget about scratching him. Cut him. Helm in, Holmstrom out. yesyesyes, we know....holmstrom is the epicenter of all that is evil in this world. he helps old ladies across the street, only to leave them stranded halfway across as he dashes the rest of the way giggling....he touches nuns inappropriately, and he teaches children how to swear while telling them the "truth about santa clause". he's a rotten, useless old man.... i must however ask you...if the original topic is "darren helm questionable for thursday's game", how exactly do you expect helm to be in whilst holmstrom-the-horrible goes out? did we lose touch with the intended topic of discussion just a wee bit, hmmn? you know...bet that bastard holmstrom didn't even once wish helmer a speedy recovery. probably sent dead flowers if he sent any at all! takes change from the pencil jars of blind beggars, too... Snazzy 0 Report post Posted October 6, 2009 Anyone remember last year when Lebda got benched by Babcock? When he came back he was solid and complimented the team very well. I hope this happens again. I don't understand all the Lebda hate, he's a good 6th d-man, and cheap. He had some big games for us in the 07-08 and 08-09 cup runs. Granted he's been aweful since the start of the season, I do trust he'll turn it around.

Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted October 6, 2009 Sweet. We need his energy, defensive presence, hustle, hitting and hey, he could PK a bit too. All essential elements for ending a slump.

But still Homer is arguably the best in front of the in this team (one of the best in the league still).

We need his energy. I do wish that Bab's would switch up the lines... Datsyuk-Zetterberg-Franzen Bertuzzi-Filppula-Leino Cleary-Helm-Williams Maltby-Draper-Holmstrom This would be an awesome combo. Good look to anyone containing that top line, and from watching the past seasons very closely I think it's a crime not to put Pav and Z together. If you add Franzen to that line it just oozes with offense. Also the 2nd line is still a threat, and the 3rd line could provide energy as well as scoring. Holmstrom should be relegated to the 4th line. It's not that he's playing badly, but we need the guy healthy for the season and a healthy Homer is a good Homer. Limiting his time to 4th line minutes and the PP might help him to stay healthy. Now only if we could get Lilja on that back end with Big Rig...

I like the lines, but putting out top three forwards all on the top line isn't really Mike's style. Switch Franzen for Bert and Bert for Cleary and we're golden
