Os-Average

Detroit GM Ken Holland has always believed in spending payroll on skaters, not goaltenders. Hs theory goes something like this: team’s reliance on goaltending diminishes in direct proportion to how good it is up front.

After two losses to St. Louis in Europe however, the question becomes: Just how good does a team have to be to succeed if Chris Osgood mails in another poor regular season, with Jimmy Howard as backup?

If Rick Dipietro gets anywhere close to healthy, look for Islanders GM Garth Snow to offer either Dwayne Roloson or Martin Biron to the Red Wings.

SPORTSNET.CA: Mark Spector recently reported if NY Islanders goaltender gets anywhere close to healthy to look for Isles GM Garth Snow to offer either Martin Biron or Dwayne Roloson to the Detroit Red Wings.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: Of those two I believe Biron is the most likely to be shopped as he's younger than Roloson by 8 years and carries a more affordable $1.4 million contract. As to either being offered to the Red Wings it's a little premature to make that assessment. Let's see how Wings backup Jimmy Howard performs over the next four-six weeks.

ROFLMAO!!

Yeah, I don't see this happening!

$1.4 million cap hit! OUCH!

Trading away Howard and Lebda would come pretty close to clearing that $1.4...

or Williams alone, or Bertuzzi alone.

If goaltending remains an issue. I don't see why it wouldn't/couldn't happen.

I still want Howard to be given a chance though...

and no, I don't think his previous outings nor one game into this season is enough time.

Also, Where in the world is Manny Fernandez?

EDIT: The Search Is On.

For what it's worth, Ecklund (I know) is speculating today that Biron could be on his way to Detroit. I'm all for it!

If they give up on Howard I am going to be pissed.

He's only 25 and most goalies get real good later in life. I say hang on to him as a backup at least for this year.

It's too early to cast Jimmy IMO. However he needs to be a bit more composed in there. He looked like he was breakdancing in goal the other night. If he can't get it done though, I think Biron would be very good here. I like his size and style. He would be in the hunt for a lot of shutouts IMO, like Conkiln was.

Hmm...let's look at some of the top goaltenders who began their professional careers in the 90s.

Martin Brodeur (Calder winner, NHL 2nd-Team All-Star, Cup winner by 25)

Chris Osgood (NHL 2nd-Team All-Star, Cup winner by 25)

Jose Theodore (Hart winner, Vezina winner, NHL 2nd-team All-Star by 25)

Cam Ward (Cup winner and Conn Smythe trophy by 25)

Roberto Luongo (NHL 2nd-Team All-Star by 25)

There are some other goalies whose careers began at or around 25 who have had strong careers. But this almost exclusively applies to European goaltenders (Dominik Hasek, Evgeni Nabokov, Miikka Kiprusoff, Nikolai Khabibulin, etc.)

Howard could make a good backup if he can get his head straight and work out the kinks in his game. But he hasn't shown ANYTHING that would make me believe he has more than that in his game.
