Kyle Quincy

Back then, I wanted the Wings to keep Quincey. Not because he was necessarily better than Lebda or Meech, but because he was a different type of defenseman than them. Lebda and Meech are basically the same player, which is basically a faster, less skilled Rafalski. The Wings already had a lot of that type of player on the blueline. Quincey was a bit more of a stay-at-home guy that could drop the gloves if needed and be a more physical element on the blueline. That's why I wanted him to stay.

I doubt if he did stay that he'd be the player he is today. His growth would probably still be stunted. We'll never know, but it seems to be about universally acknowledged that signing Chelios for last year was a bad move, and losing Quincey was a result of keeping Chelios.

This was my feelings on the whole situation as well. I had Quincey as a cheaper, younger, rougher version of Lilja with way more upside. His profile at TSN for career was always a top 4 defenseman. That's what I thought he'd be. The guy didn't get much of a look at the NHL level. The problem was this whole, I'm signing everybody and we'll see who plays well at camp. That's a moronic way to handle prospects. Seriously.

The guy couldn't settle down and relax. He was tired of being sent down to the minors when he knew he should be in the NHL. He was pressing and trying to do too much. Trying to be extra physical and taking fighting lessons. Trying to add an element we needed. I even remember Mike Babcock saying he wanted Kyle to simplify and let the game come to him. He could tell he was pressing.

Last year after Quincey was playing so well for L.A. you could tell Babcock wished they had kept him. Saying in the media that they should have just given him the spot. He was right they should have. He would have earned it after he felt comfortable. IMO this is exactly why Howard is getting his chance. They don't want to give any more talent away without seeing it in action with the big club for an extended period of time. That's just smart hockey operations.

Quincey obviously wouldn't be putting up the points here that he has with L.A. or Colorado, because we don't need anymore PP quarterbacks. IMO he would look damn fine playing with Ericsson. It's not the end of the world that we gave him away, but it was a mistake that had everything to do with Chelios and loyalty. Everyone please just admit it so we can all move on.

He's an RFA but there's no way we can afford him anyway after this season.

I'm more than happy with the personnel of:

1: Lids-Kronwall

2: Rafalski-Ericsson

3: Stuart-Garbage

Spare: Random dude

Are they playing to their potential? That's for another thread.

It was the fact he kept getting injured, had/has a bad back and didn't play well enough during the preseason to get ahead of Lebda/Meech/Lilja/Chelios when Holland/Babcock and Co. were looking for someone to step up. The only person to do so was Big Rig but since we were 300K over the cap he was sent down and since Quincey played like complete crap during the preseason he was waived.

Maybe we can all agree on this. Quincy's whining about not getting a ring for playing four regular season games is ludicrous (see Free Press and Det News). There is nothing inconsistent here in how the Wings handing out rings and if any team has a track record to review, it is certainly Detroi's four cups in recent history. Good riddance to a mediocre player. Even if he might be more consistent than Lebda (and I am not saying he is or was), who needs a baby on the team?

Actually that was a reporter looking to make something out of nothing, which is exactly what he did.

Oh man. Are you saying they hyped this up? The article I read quoted Holland as saying he had a number of conversations with Quincy's agent about the ring. Having been asked questions a few times by reporters/writers and seeing the result, I can certainly see your point. Alas, what has happened to jounralistic integrity in this city?

gaffe's...

fleishmann in a package for lang...oops. fleishmann's gonna be huge for the caps when the bloodclot is out of his leg.

matthias for bertuzzi's 20 or so games...hmm.

as far as the d goes, i'd rather see the wings waive lebda and meech already and just bring kindl up to round out the 3rd pairing with ericsson.

and no more mike peca! that's not even kind of funny.

Articles like this one?

It's basically a non-story. He's honest about being disappointed, but that's hardly whining about it. And it's not like he's not appreciative. Like someone else said, this is a writer trying to make a story out of nothing.

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/20...ys_not_get.html

DETROIT -- While Kyle Quincey had hoped to receive a Stanley Cup ring from the Detroit Red Wings following the 2007-08 season, he said he's not upset he didn't get one.

Quincey, now with the Colorado Avalanche, told the Denver Post: "It bothers me a little that I didn't get a ring.'' But he said before tonight's game against the Red Wings that he doesn't view it as a snub and stressed how grateful he is to the Detroit organization.

Quincey spent most of the 2007-08 season with Grand Rapids (AHL), playing just six games for the Red Wings as an injury replacement. He did not play in the postseason but skated with the Black Aces (playoff reserves).

"It's kind of a gray area. Some of the (Black Aces) didn't even touch the Cup after we won,'' Quincey said. "Do we feel a part of it? Are we a part of it? Detroit really made a big thing that we're a family, we're a big part of the team, working hard in practice, getting the guys ready for games.

"I would never trade that experience for anything. It's a great stepping stone for where I am now. Just being a part of that was amazing.''

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said the team's policy on which players get a ring is clear: They must be with the club all season or play at least one game in the finals. It is management's decision, not something players vote on, as the Post story stated.

"Right or wrong, to get your name on the Cup or to get a ring is something incredibly special,'' Holland said. "If we didn't have some kind of cut off, we'd be giving out a thousand rings.''

Holland said he is aware that Quincey is disappointed about not getting a ring, because Quincey's agent, Pat Morris, brought it to his attention several times.

"But we've won four Cups and a Black Ace has never received a ring,'' Holland said. "Jonathan Ericsson and Jimmy Howard were Black Aces in 2008, they didn't get rings, either.''

Quincey didn't qualify to have his name engraved on the Cup (40 regular-season games or one game in the finals), but he had his day with the trophy in his hometown of Caledon, Ontario.

"I'm so grateful for them giving me that opportunity,'' Quincey said. "I was injured throughout the playoffs, so them having me up here at all was a blessing.''

Quincey is off to a good start, with a goal and five assists, and leads the team in average ice time (24:51).

"He's very poised with the puck, shows a lot of patience, makes plays in tight areas, not just throwing it around the boards,'' Avalanche coach Joe Sacco said. "A big body, competes in the defensive zone, plays with an edge. He's playing against other teams' top lines.''

Also of note from the same article:

The Red Wings did not have the salary-cap space to keep both Quincey and Derek Meech at the start of last season. They chose Meech and were unable to finalize a trade for Quincey. So Quincey, who was out of minor-league options, was placed on waivers and claimed by the Los Angeles Kings on Oct. 13.

I can only guess they chose Meech because he's undersized and doesn't fight? :D
