Buppy 1,720 Report post Posted October 21, 2009 ...I've heard this before, but the Wings really aren't in that good of shape with the cap next year. They only have 7 forwards and 4 defensemen signed. If Lidstrom comes back, he'll also use up atleast $4.5 million of that cap space. Obviously we can't say for sure whether or not the cap will go up and by how much, but for arguments sake if it stays the same, and Lids signs for a modest $4.5, that only leaves the Wings with $11.6 million to spread amongst 8 forwards and 2 other defensemen (given that the Wings will likely need 13 Offensemen and 7 D-men). ... The situation looks a bit better if you consider that 6 of those 7 forwards (Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen, Filppula, Cleary, Leino) could very well be our top 6 next year. Optimistic perhaps, but feasible. $16 mil is a lot to sign Nick, a 6th & 7th d-man, and 6 bottom-6 forwards. Then you have Kindl making a bit over $800k probably taking one spot. Helm, Abdelkader, Eaves, and Meech are all RFA and only Helm I think has much chance of getting over $1 million. (Though Jabs and Eaves have a lot of time left to prove themselves.) Someone like Maltby, Homer, or May could help fill out the bottom of the roster for something close to league minimum. It's conceivable that we could have as much as $5-6 million to spend on a FA. That's if the cap stays flat.

That's if the cap stays flat. I'm not really sure how you worked it out that we'd have $5-6M to spend on a FA but I'll make my best guess below. Assuming the cap stays at $56.8M we would have $16.095M left. The way I'd see it is we'd have something like this to look forward too. Signed Players: Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen, Filppula, Cleary, Draper, Leino, Rafalski, Kronwall, Stuart, Ericsson, Osgood, Howard TOTAL $40.704M That means as we would need 6 forwards and 3 defencemen. If we were to bring up Kindl at $.883M, resign Lidstrom for cheap at $4.5M and resign Lilja at his same deal of $1.25 we would now have $47.333M. That would leave us with $9.467M to spend on the remaining forwards. If we resigned Helm ($1M), ABdelkader to his same deal ($.85), Eaves to his same deal ($.5M) we'd have $7.117M left. Personally I figure that both Holmstrom and Maltby will want to be back. I can see Maltby taking the league min of $.5M and Holmstrom at $1.5M and that would leave us with $5.117M with one forward position left. That means saying goodbye to Bertuzzi and Williams. We could resign May at $.5M and then have $4.617 for a UFA. However, at that point we'd end up with 14 forwards, 7 defencemen and 2 goalies, which isn't allowed. Obviously, that roster doesnt make a whole lot of sense given the mix of bottom 6 forwards but the cash would be there. The roster at that point would look like (ignore line combos, just listed to show who's on the roster): Zetterberg - Datsyuk - Holmstrom Leino - Filppula - Franzen Eaves - Abdelkader - Cleary Draper - Helm - Maltby May Lidstrom - Rafalski Stuart - Kronwall Ericsson - Lilja Kindl Osgood Howard It should be noted that some of those contract numbers I used were definitely low. Persoanlyl I see LIdstrom resigning at around $5.5M and some of the other guys getting little raises here and there. I'd say it's probably a little more like that we'd have $3-4M to sign a UFA as opposed to $5-6M.

For instance, I think it's very possible that Homer will retire, and Lilja may be forced to. Nor do we need a full 14 forwards (technically, we don't need even 13). That leaves you with over 7 mil with two spots to fill (and hand out raises). Again, I'm not saying it's going to happen, just that if Kenny thinks we need a big ticket FA, we definitely have some room to work.

I see what you're saying but I cant imagine not having 13 forwards. EIther way, they should have some cash available but that also means a full spot to Eaves. It's tough to say at this point but I see where you're coming from. I wasnt trying t oshoot down your argument. I was just trying to see where you came up with the numbers
