Datsyuk misses practice with minor injury

EDMONTON, Alberta -- Pavel Datsyuk missed practice today at Rexall Place, for a reason he jokingly said surprised him. The injury is not expected to keep him out of Thursday’s game against the Oilers.

In addition to contributing two goals and one assist in Tuesday’s 5-4 victory at Vancouver, Datsyuk also prevented the Canucks from scoring.

“I have blocked shot,†he said today. “I’m surprised myself, too. Today, it’s hard to put on skates.â€

Datsyuk said he was certain he’d be good to go Thursday. Coach Mike Babcock said the same thing, adding that if everyone is healthy, Kirk Maltby and Justin Abdelkader will be scratched. Jimmy Howard will get the start in net, as scheduled.

I think I remember reading that several players were testing out ankle protection, at least. They liked it, but haven't been using them because it alters their movement.

I would imagine they want him with the squad whilst they're on this big road trip out west so they've got plenty of players in case of injuries, and also so he can be part of the team - y'know, bonding on the road and all that.

Given that his play isn't forcing Babcock to keep him in the line-up, I expect that when we get back to Detroit he'll be sent to GR.
