Filppula out 6-8 Weeks

How does that account for teams who make deadline deals? If you went by the cap number, more often than not they'd be over the limit. And again, the Ducks signed guys up the the cap and then Niedermeyer comes back as well as Selanne. Niedermayer wasn't counting against the cap because he was suspended and Selanne signed as a free agent late in the game and thus they only had part of the yearly contract active on the cap hit. Maybe I'm totally forgetting something, but I thought that's how it worked.

I think that is how it works for everything other than the LTIR cap relief. The idea behind LTIR is only to allow for replacement players, not to accumulate cap space. Otherwise teams up against the cap would get bonus cash by having injured players out for a while.

This is how I used to think too, but apparently LTIR doesn't remove the player's hit from the cap it only allows the team to find a replacement valued up to the original player's cap hit.

Niedermeyer was suspended, so that's a whole different situation than LTIR.

I'm looking at this now again. I see what you're saying, but as it relates to trade and the final cap value at season end, it seems like things are still pro-rated. The wording of everything is kinda odd...it seems like you're allowed to be over the daily cap via trade so long as you're in compliance with the final cap hit number by seasons end. I think I'm more confused after reading things again...

Yeah, ok, I see it. Still feel like elements of the wording is, well, not as clear as it could be, but it was written by lawyers. In any event, I don't think it really changes our circumstances right now if we were to make a trade so long as we keep with out plan of ditching some extra weight as other guys get healthy anyways...

Here is my idea...The Washington Capitals obviously do not want Nylander anymore...he is playing well in Grand Rapids...His cap hit is ridiculous...

If in a you scratch our back we scratch yours scenario...we have housed him so they don't need to move rookies out of Hershey...We could use a 3rd line center that is a playmaker...half of Nylander's cap hit isn't that bad...if they waive him, then recall waivers him...I think the Wings could take him...

At this point I'm really just searching for the golden nugget in the heat of the s*** storm though...

Excuse me while I go slit my wrists :(

What else can go wrong this year? Whatever the outcome of this season is, it's going to be remembered as one of the toughest seasons for the Wings in the last 20 years. Nothing is going to come easy it seems.

Time for Datsyuk and Zetterberg to play like real superstars. Time for Bertuzzi to stop hitting posts, for Leino to show those 13 games last year wasn't a fluke, for Lidstrom to score on some point shots again and for Ozzie to give us goaltending. So many guys have to step up. They needed to do that before this, but now they REALLY need to.

Wow 6 to 8 weeks, you knew he was injured but I was hoping for a week or something.......this is really tough because now you have to seperate datsyuk and z otherwise draper would be the second line center.

This season seems like its going to be a real kick in the balls.

Ditching extra weight eh? Don't tell Bertuzzi's giant ass you plan on doing that.

Agreed. He probably has enough left in the tank to help bring grit, calm and consistency to the Wings' game. He would also be a great mentor to the younger players, both on the ice during games and practices, and in the locker room.

I'm also ready to see Maltby back on the ice for some of the same reasons. This has been a relatively great year for him so far and I'd like to see him get more ice time, in spite of the young'ns needing the experience.

Sorry. Forgot to copy and paste. This is in reference to bringing Shanny back.

I am extremely concerned. The Wings dominated in the regular season last year, but they were doing it by hiding some of the worst goaltending in the league with TONS of scoring depth. The entire rationale for duplicating success this year was that Hossa, Hudler, and Samuelsson could be offset by the emergence of Filppula, Franzen, Leino, and perhaps someone like Helm or Abdelkader. Two of those guys are now hurt for significant periods of time, and the goaltending is arguably WORSE. Moreover, the alternative to Osgood is not a proven NHL goalie like Ty Conklin, but a guy that very may well be fringe AHL talent.

Even if you forget the production loss, the biggest issue (as stated above) is that Filppula is a puck carrier. The Wings have always been able to control the flow of the game, and stabilize after defensive errors because they always have the puck, but that becomes a lot harder now. There is no good solution to this, but the Nylander one would probably be the best fit.

You guys are missing the big picture. Our problems lie within our fundementals. Our team is extremely deep. We can make up for the injuries. We came back in the 3rd lastnight without Fil because we started passing well, firing it on net not around it, puck control somehow improved immencely, puck suppost actually meant something and our boys started finding each other out there. Goaltending can't be fixed but if we limit the oppositions shots the way we did in the 3rd because our huge minutes in the attacking zone I think we will be fine. I'm not expecting a cup this year or a President's Trophy but a solid finish is no out of the question. Fil is a talented player which yes of coure we will miss but to panic the way some people are is unnesecary. We should be missig the presence of an actual number goalie and Lilja more then we do Filppula.
