blankrap 9 Report post Posted November 10, 2009 Errr....you just helped make my point. My premise was, there is no reason why we should not try and emulate some of the things the NFL does. You countered with they know how to market better. Well....I'd say marketing better would be something the NHL could try and emulate from the NFL. Work on the straw man. Got Ya. Didn't think you were talking about marketing but marketing is what is needed. The dumb NHL can't just have commercials on the NHL network because chances are if you are watching the hockey network you are already a fan. Blah, NHL fails in marketing. You countered with they know how to market better. Well....I'd say marketing better would be something the NHL could try and emulate from the NFL. Work on the straw man. The NHL *CAN'T* market itself any better (in the States, at least) because most people are simply incapable of actually watching the product the League is trying to market. If the NHL wants to REALLY follow the NFL's footsteps, it'd have taken a contract with a channel that isn't an obscure piece of s*** whose mere provider coverage is constantly in flux. People at the very least *have* and *watch* ESPN; even if the NHL would be obscured by other leagues, start with that and build off of it. Sticking with VS. is a terrible way for the League to get it's foot in the door - people simply don't have the door they're trying to stick their foot into. dobbles 252 Report post Posted November 10, 2009 what was the reason for putting in the trapezoid in the first place? to punish goalies like Brodeur who can actually handle the puck? my recollection was that it would increase the effectiveness of dumping the puck in as golaies couldn't go play the puck and ruin offensive opportunities. it means forwards only have to beat defenders and not the goalie too if they dump into the corner. T.Low 1,011 Report post Posted November 10, 2009 (edited) Get rid of the trapezoid?!!! Thats discrimination! The NHL has circles, rectangles, triangles, hell ,even lines and dots! But you guys pick on the lowly trapezoid. Geometric discrimination!!! Its a stupid rule though, no doubt. A very socialist way of thinking: Pulling down and penalizing the hardworking skilled acheivers to equalize them with the less talented, less committed proletariat. If Turco can play the puck out there and wants to risk it, let him, and let the cards fall where they may. Teams must learn to play the Stars accordingly. If Luongo can't play the puck outside of the Tzoid, TFB. The Canucks will adapt to his strengths and weaknesses, and teams will play them accordingly. Thats sports. Turco has excellent stick handling skills because he worked very hard to acquire them. Luongo does not have those skills because he never worked hard enough or spent enough time to acquire them. He was simply concerned with blocking shots, not dangling. Edited November 10, 2009 by T.Low

cusimano_brothers 1,655 Report post Posted November 11, 2009 From TSN : ... The first day of meetings didn't produce many fireworks -- although the group decided not to recommend a change to the trapezoid rule that limits where goalies can play the puck behind their net. The merits of potentially eliminating it were discussed, but didn't gain much momentum. The trapezoid rule was introduced as part of a package of changes coming out of the NHL lockout and San Jose Sharks GM Doug Wilson thought it was time to take a closer look at it. However, he wasn't upset that his colleagues chose to leave it in the rulebook. "I don't think there's a great appetite to change it," said Wilson. "And I don't mind that because you've got to be conscious that when you change one thing, it could impact two or three other things. We put it on the agenda, we'd asked to talk about it, just to really spur thought." Ultimately, that's what these meetings are all about. ... And, so it doesn't go. Glubki 17 Report post Posted November 11, 2009 Agreed. The trapazoid should go. And while they are at it please get rid of the stupid puck over the glass rule. It amounts to giving a team a penalty because of an accident. We didn't have the rule before the lock-out (except for goaltenders) and you didn't see people shooting the puck over the glass then. Worst case, don't make it a penalty - treat it like icing. Yes we did and it happened quite frequently. Now that they know it is a penalty it only occurs by accident. It used to be an easy out for a line-shift that was being dominated in their own zone. It slowed the game down and killed momentum that is why it was put in place. Pavel Hossyukstrom 2 Report post Posted November 11, 2009 trapezoid must go! it makes the ice look like a geometric checkerboard too many lines. maybe the could get rid of the it and put the net up against the boards next so no more behind the net. good idea?! stevkrause 1,247 Report post Posted November 11, 2009 Every other line on the ice is parallel to another so OBVIOUSLY the trapezoid does not belong. this. haha
