Doc Holiday 0 Report post Posted December 5, 2009 Getting players to play the way they are supposed to is precisely the coach's job. Thanks for confirming that. Making adjustments and responding to situations between and during games is another part of the job. The fact of the matter is that games 6 and 7 were lost and the coach bears some responsibility. I guess you can always argue how much, but the SF loss definitely brought Babcock down to earth. It really didn't, but okay. Babcock shut down Crosby with his matchups, and put Malkin against players who could provide the equal amount of production and they didn't. There is only so much a coach can do to motivate players making millions of dollars (and not terribly younger than him). Players need to be responsible for themselves, and the fact of the matter was the team in itself was not slow or unmotivated. It was specific players. Not a chance in hell that Babs was out-coached by a rookie who had two generational talents on his side. Bylsma is great, don't get my wrong. But he wasn't some coaching god that dominated Babcock. They both let it up to the playes with their matchups (which were great on both sides). Dan's players won out.
haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted December 5, 2009 (edited) I'm not saying Babcock is a bad coach. I just don't think he is as great as everyone makes him out to be. He was clearly out-coached in the SF finals last year. Blysma adjusted and Babcock did not. I also believe he has a stubborn streak about line combos when some of them obviously do not work. Let's be honest, with the talent the wings have had over the his reign, there should be success. Sometimes a coach isn't really challenged until things go south like they appear to be this year. So we'll see how things go and if he get an effort out of this team. 3 STANLEY CUP FINALS IN 6 SEASONS! That's not great? Yes he had a lot of talent to work with on the Wings. Remember Dave Lewis? There are plenty of coaches who've had a lot of talent on their team but couldn't quite get them team there (someone already mentioned Therien). That's not to say Babcock doesn't get at least a part of the blame for the Wings play, just like he gets credit for their success. But to call the guy overrated?? The Wings win the Cup and make it game 7 the next year, and you're already turning on Babcock. What a joke. He wasn't outcoached in the Finals. The Wings were injured and ran out of gas against a younger, healthier, hungrier, equally talented team. Edited December 5, 2009 by haroldsnepsts
