Red Wings supposedly showed interest in Halak

Canadiens entertaining trade calls for Halak

TheFourthPeriod.com

A lot of chatter circulating around the NHL these days revolves around the Canadiens and the possibility of the team trading goalie Jaroslav Halak, reports Montreal's La Presse.

According to the paper, the Detroit Red Wings supposedly showed interest in Halak last month, while the St. Louis Blues are also eyeing the 24-year-old.

Former Canadiens head coach and current NHL analyst Jacques Demers claims as many as "three or four teams" are interested in Halak.

Despite the attention Halak has received of late, La Presse journalist Richard Labbé suggests the Canadiens should hang on to their No.2 netminder.

Halak is making only $775,000 this season and will become a restricted free agent this summer. He isn't likely to command a grossly high salary, simply because he hasn't played enough at the NHL level.

However, many believe Halak will become a No.1 goalie soon enough and the Czech native is willing to wait his turn.

It's uncertain, at this point, if Canadiens GM Bob Gainey will bite on an offer for Halak, but La Presse suggests it would take a significant deal for the Habs to pull the trigger.

With the way Howard has been playing, I don't really see this happening. Unless Holland is trying to replace Osgood, which I also do not see happening.

What would it take to get this guy? Certainly we would have to give up one of Larsson or McCollum plus more.

I don't think the Wings will make an offer.

No way it happens now. I could see Holland checking things out earlier in the season in case Howard didnt work out and he as forced to replace him. He'd want to know what the price would be. But now there is zero reason for Detroit to get a goaltender.

Im surprised they said the Blues are interested. Both Mason and Conklin are solid but what do I know

Hendricks Hockey says we want Halak, and if it happens Helm may be the man. God damnit, our goaltending is doing fine, and Helmer needs to STAY!

A month ago our goaltending looked really shaky and it really looked like Howard would never make it. Naturally Holland would shop around. But now? There's no reason to get rid of Howard, he's doing consistently well in a rookie season. Especially to give up Helm? I think people are just reporting old news without realizing it happened a month ago and is no longer relevant to the Wings.

I don't see this happeing at all... the way Howard has looked, it would be stupid to give him up... Plus Holland thinks he is the future of this team... I think everybody would seriously question the management if they made this move, especially for Helm... this WILL NOT happen... we need someone who can score, not a goalie

RDS.CA: Renaud Lavoie recently examined the market value of Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jaroslav Halak as well as the teams which might be interested in him. Lavoie claims the Detroit Red Wings have made inquiries, the Edmonton Oilers could use a goalie, and the Philadelphia Flyers haven't fully closed the door on a potential deal. The Columbus Blue Jackets were believed interested but a source denied this.

MONTREAL GAZETTE: Pat Hickey reported on Christmas eve Halak's strong performance over his previous three games at that time, stopping 137 shots during that period, and based on that performance the Canadiens cannot afford to move him now.

SPECTOR'S NOTE: Factor in the 47-save performance in last night's OT win over the Maple Leafs and that's even more reason the Habs shouldn't move him. Still, it'll also bolster his trade value, but I maintain if the Canadiens do move Halak it'll be near or on the March 3rd trade deadline, not now.

"I can however confirm that the Red Wings are among teams that have an interest. Pat Verbeek qui est un dépisteur professionnel des Wings ad'ailleurs assisté à la brillante performance de Halak lundi soir à Atlanta. Pat Verbeek is a professional scout Wings moreover witnessed a brilliant performance Halak Monday night in Atlanta. "

i agree with that guy goaltending is not our problem its the injuries we lost a s*** load of guys in the off season so we needed to build chemistry then one by one we started losing players every game. once we get the big boys back into the line up its a different story we can go from having janik and miller and abdelkader 2nd line PP to having franzen flip and knronwall williams etc.... as long as we can keep grinding out wins and stay close enough we should be alright...i read a interview the other day asking lindstrom if he would play until he was 50 he laughed and said no chance and if im not mistakin his contract is up this year im a little worried although he looks a little slow this year and is still getting the job done but if he does leave along with some other players we can afford to let go we would have a bunch of cap to spend any thought ?!

If we acquire Halak, it won't be to replace Howard. It'll be to replace Osgood. Say whatever you want, but Ozzie is 37, playing like s*** and one of these days he won't be Mr. Clutch in the postseason. He won't be forever, and he won't play until he's 50. Halak is 24 and Howard is 25. I wouldn't at all mind a 1a 1b combo between two goalies who would make a combined what? Not even 2 million? And if one plays well enough for a pay increase, trade the other. Detroit loves having two cheap, top notch netminders. I could see this happening. So long as MTL's asking price isn't too high. Holland's not stupid, or hasty. He's laughs in the face of pressure salesmen.

Nothing either Howard or Halak have done makes them 'top notch' goalies. We don't have one top notch goalie, let's not pretend we may have two any time soon.

For their salary, they'd be close. From what I've seen, I believe they both can be starter quality guys.
