dobbles 252 Report post Posted December 21, 2009 I haven't been to a Griffins game in a couple years so forgive my ignorance, but Newbury was outperforming Ritola in the minors in every category; more points in less games played, more penalty minutes, better +/-. Besides, Newbury wasn't doing all that poorly in the NHL(1 goal, 4 pm, +1) Why would Ritola be replacing Newbury? i think its a matter of the future. newbury is an older player. you know what you are going to get. he has had several callups over the last few years and is a known quantity. whereas ritola is younger and still unknown in regards to nhl play. as we have seen with many guys this year, at some point you have to put them in the deep end to sink or swim. ritola is a prospect that the wings have invested resources into. whereas newbury is turning into a journeyman ahl'er that might not have any long term future in the organization. so while i think they will still very much factor in this seasons play, i think the long term effects weigh more heavily in this instance. Guest micah Report post Posted December 21, 2009 Maybe this is a showcase to get him traded? Although, I can't immagine him doing anything to make anybody else actually want him. He hasn't been able to shine in the AHL yet.

Drake_Marcus 890 Report post Posted December 21, 2009 This rocks! I hope he gets a goal too. Ritola represents a good chunk of my Red Wings rookie card collection so I need this kid to pan out about as much as Holland does.

I see nothing wrong with that since Newbury wasn't overly helping or hurting the team while he was here.
Andy Pred 48 337 Report post Posted December 21, 2009 I honestly think but for the WJC, young Tats would have been up instead of Newbury. I've said before he'll be a Wing before he's 20, but who was the last kid to be a Wing at 19?

Guest E_S_A_D Report post Posted December 21, 2009 (edited) Should have been Jamie Tardif. He's not a Godson of Nicklas Lidstrom. Ritola: 2009-10 Grand Rapids Griffins AHL 31 GAMES 7 7 14 points No grit, no size, no toughness. He's intimidating. Newbury: 2009-10 Grand Rapids Griffins* AHL 27 GAMES 7 12 19 points Grit, toughness, tenacity. Edited December 21, 2009 by E_S_A_D

Guest E_S_A_D Report post Posted December 21, 2009 My favorite quotes from Mattias Ritola. This guy is a warrior and feared by many. On food: What do you miss most about Sweden? “I miss the food. You guys have cheese in everything. There’s not a lot of American food I can eat. Everything has so much fat. It’s not good.†On Americans and Love: You have a girlfriend. Any plans? “You (Americans) are crazy about that. You see guys here married at 20 or 21 all the time. It’s not like that in Sweden. Maybe if you are 28 or 30. Say you feel really good about it at 21, then you feel really bad at 26. Now what are you going to do?†
Guest E_S_A_D Report post Posted December 21, 2009 (edited) It's this simple. Ritola's upside > Newbury's upside Lets see. 1 goal, +1 rating in 4 games, stuck up for teammates, hit, and provided grit. . I'll give him the 4 game comparison that Newbury was given. Also, aren't you all the same ones that had Leino as the next superstar? If I remember correctly; Leino is a flop.
