Brodeur Breaks Sawchucks Record!

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I'm not saying Sawchuk wasn't the great goaltender who we all know he was.

It just funny how many people are rocksolid in their belief that he is the best ever, without EVER seen him play.

Besides that, I don't think you can compare Brodeur to Sawchuk.

Hell, I don't think you can compare Brodeur to Dryden or Parent.

Different era's, different goaltenders.

But congrats Marty, hell of an accomplishment !

I have to admit I enjoy watching Marty break every single one of Roy's records.

I know this one belonged to Sawchuk, but it has been a thrill watching him obliterate each and every one of Patrick's numbers.

Roy Worters, 67

Patrick Roy, 66

Turk Broda, 62

John Ross Roach, 58

Evgeni Nabokov,[12] 47

I knew Fuhr wasn't 4th.....There's VS for ya....don't know what they were showing you.....but there are the leaders. Hainsworth took over for George Vezina for the Habs...he only played 11 seasons.....you wanna compare goalies in different eras? Hainsworth has the all time record with 22 shutouts in a 44 game season. If you're putting eras next to each other, Hainsworth > Sawchuck. What would his numbers look like if he got to play 16-20 years like Brodeur and Sawchuck?

Connell played for the Original Ottawa Senators, and I'm pretty sure played for the Detroit Falcons for a year.

Don't know who else you'd be talking about not hearing of...Tiny Thompson played for the Bruins in the 40's.... But with VS list that had grant Fuhr at 4th, I have no idea who they'd put up there.

Oh ok, and thanks for the stats/ explanations. I know little about past nhl goalies. <_<

Rofl! What has Ryan Miller done yet? Miller is still early on in his career and so far zero playoff success. You can not judge a goalie until they go prove themselves in the playoffs.

He hasn't won anything but he's a better goaltender so far this season, he's outstanding and very impressive making things look easy... i got a bit of a problem with marty and his ortodox style of play tbh

Ok I'll give you that. Miller definitely has the tools to end up high on the shutout list.

This pretty much sums up your immense hockey-knowledge..

sawchuck is the best, never seen him play but still

brodeur - fat pig that cheated on his wife, plus THE TRAP

umm, Sawchuk was a skinny alcoholic who cheated on his wife and by most acounts was a pretty awful father. I don't hold that against the guy, we all have our own demons - but if you're gonna judge Brodeur you might as well judge Sawchuk right away too.

What? That Brodeur has had an awesome career but that Miller has outplayed Brodeur this season although not by a huge margin...Brodeur gains from the system that is in new jersey.

Oh, and i can't believe you're a fanboy of osgood... chriiiiiist. He's bad like reallllllyyy bad in the regular season.

Congrads to Marty!

I personally never thought this record would be broken until lastyear when Marty passed Roy for the most wins. At that time I think he was only 10 back and he was healthy again.

It sucks that a RedWing has to move aside in the record books, but other than Marty beating us in the 95 Final, I have nothing but respect for the guy and thank God he did it against Sid and the Penguins!

Marty is about the only person with the Devils that I do like (now that Shanny's gone again). We can talk about Sawchuk playing in todays league if you want, but how about Marty playing back then with the style he has now? Even with primitive equipment, I think he'd be great. Every time I watch films of old games from the 40's - 60's, I'm amazed to see how many goals were scored on what seem like unremarkable, routine wrist shots. I may be wrong, but I just think that if you put Brodeur in a time machine, put him in the standard equipment of the day, and let him play his butterfly type of game, that he would have had a ton of shutouts back then.

^^^^^^

This.

If you go back and Watch the Quality of hockey back then.....even the 72 summit Series, those guys arn't anywhere near as athletic as today's guys. You can take any Good player now, and if you time machine them, back to the 20's-70's, they'd go down as the greatest players ever. I know people don't want ot hear this, But Put Eric Lindros in a Game against Gordie Howe, and Lindros Dominates him. Bigger, Stronger, Faster, More skill. I personally believe if you put guys like Cleary or Helm in the 50's, with their lifetime of Training, Skill set and knowledge of the game compared to what it was back then, they'd Dominate. Dominate.

I think that's pretty much across the board in any sport. Today's athletes are head and shoulders above anybody from the past.....I'd like to get 40 times, verticals, How fst a player could skate around the ice, etc......

Think about what Pitchers would do to Babe Ruth today? Think about what Justin Verlander would do to a team back in the 20's......Training is different, Mechanics are different, lifestyles are different, upbringings are different....

Again, if you wanna compare goalies of Different eras....Clint Benedict.... 22 shutouts in 44 games. the Discussions begins and ends right there.
