1/5 GDT: United States at Canada

I knew someone would bring this up. The Canadian version of last night's game would've been a greater classic, considering they were the ones who rallied to tie the game. Blowing a 2 goal lead with 3 minutes left but still winning in OT is less of I would consider a "classic" ;)

Yeah, but wasn't Canada SUPPOSED to win?

Personally I thought both teams played terrible defense and the goaltending was also very bad. I thought that goalie interference call on the USA in the last 5 mins of the 3rd was pretty weak considering the refs put the whistles away for most of the game. Without that PP, the USA probably wins in regulation.

edit: btw, I'm not trying to argue with you over this game being a "classic" one way or the other. Something is only classic to those that care, strictly subjective. I'm sure game 7 of the stanley cup finals 09 was classic for Pens fans, not so much for this Wings fan.

Someone should point you to DVDs/tapes of the 1972 Summit Series to see a classic series between two evenly matched teams.

I'm not sure what that has to do with what I said or with the tournament, but I have seen it before and would love to see it again on DVD. Definitely great hockey. The only thing I meant was that a win for the gold over the Canadians in any fashion -pretty, ugly, or in between- means more to USA Hockey than vice versa. It also means more than a gold over any other country these days. We've always been Canada's red-headed step child in the hockey family.

During the radio broadcast of the game (early in the third period), the announcers were openly critical of Eberle, saying he may as well be out their on a line by himself because he wasn't making many passes.

And it's amazing how two goals can suddenly make you the most clutch player since Clutchy Clutcherson of the 50s.

From Toronto Star :

Canada didn't win gold in the world junior hockey championship final, but the game was a winner for TSN.

...

...

Tuesday's championship final, won 6-5 by the United States in overtime, was watched by an average audience of 5.3 million viewers, according to BBM Canada overnight ratings. That's the largest Canadian television audience since a new ratings system came into effect in September.

...

...

The audience peaked at 7.5 million during the final minutes of the third period and a total audience of 12.3 million watched at least some of the game.

As of yet, no word from the other countries on their ratings figures on their coverage.
