Bertuzzi Wants to stay in Detroit

I originally didn't like signing Bertuzzi because of how he's done for us in the past and a little bit to do with his rep. But he's definitely cleaned his game up (too much IMO) and has been doing stellar. I'll admit I'm a fair-weather Bertuzzi fan, but I'm all on board right now. Get 'em signed Kenny!

I very much indeed approve of this, love the guy's attitude, can score clutch goals, and great team guy, if he just could manage to take fewer unnecessary penalties, that would be great.

My ONLY gripe with his game is the infamous "he takes bad penalties" thing. I used to think people blew it out of proportion, but the truth is, he does. I think he might be a victim of "reputation calls" at times, but he looks like such a complete player right now, it can be overlooked. If the officiating in the playoffs is anything like last years, they won't make nearly as many calls, so hopefully that minimizes that "flaw" in his game.

Regardless, I really hope he re-signs, he's looked a lot like the all-star player that he was in Vancouver.

until his back ends his career

you're full of negative energy.

For 2 million or less I'm beyond sold. He adds a solid dimension to the top two lines that isn't going to cost very much.

I agree... I'd be happier with 3 years, 6 mil... even though it raises the initial cap, he's over 35 and any contract will count against the cap if he reitres... if he wants to play another year or two after that, go a year at a time...

Way to stay positive. Like the article says, he's 1 of 3 guys to play in every game this season, that's a good sign. Zetterberg's had back issues too but people don't have a problem with him making 6+ mil 'til the end of time.

Huh? He played 8 regular season games and 16 playoff games in 2006-07 and it's pretty common knowledge that his back was a mess at that time and he was about 30lbs heavier than he is now. Judging him on his previous Red Wing stint would be harsh judgement I think !

he had freegin major back surgery. im just saying a lot of guys with back problems fall off REALLY fast. He HAS played really good this season...but in 3 years he could be a liability. I guess that's the risk you take.

I was pumped when we signed the guy last summer because I felt he had unfinished business in Detroit and I also thought he had an unfair rep. That beign said, he has exceeded even my expectations. He has acted like a consumate professional, has been a great team guy, scored some very timely goals, played excellent defensively, works hard, creates chances, I mean the guy is doing everything right (penalties aside). At $2M/yr or less there is zero chance Holland walks away from this guy. Bertuzzi has turned himself and his game into that of a model Red Wing

Stupid comparison. Bert had surgery. Z has missed a few games here and there. How can you compare the two.

Dump him...

I still don't like him, and think he'll be much less impressive once we start playing w/ a healthy team once again. Constantly trying to play to a level he can't achieve resulting in lots of horrid passes and turnovers. Better options on the market, and detroit will have the $$ to upgrade.

I sure hope Ken does not make decisions based on personal opinions of Cali. I see him play at "that level" every day. Being the most consistent Wing on the team. Get over it, Bertuzzi has and I hope he stays.

as one of the more critical people on bertuzzi, i am pretty neutral at this time. his 8 goals in 8 games stretch definitely bought him some slack with me. he had been cooling off after that, but the goal he had the other day was nice. assuming he can keep up moderately productive play down the stretch (last year he pretty much dissapeared for calgary as the season went on) then i think i would be supportive of keeping him.

however, if he is committed to staying here, why give him a 3 or 4 year contract? give him a shorter contract so that if his health goes bad, its not such a big deal. additionally, i think keeping his cap number down to 1.5mil or so would allow him to be a good deal. getting up to 2mil makes his contract look much worse. in the cap era its all about having players give good value for their services. especially if bertuzzi says money is not as important, getting that cap hit lowered gives the team more flexibility.

I agree. 4 yrs might be pushing it at his age, being a big guy, and having back prob history. If we can get two more solid years out of him, possibly a 3rd.

Isn't he from Sudbury which is only like three hours or so from Metro D. Still has family there etc, so its easy for Grandparents to visit often and all that. The older a guy gets, the more important that stuff becomes. I live 2500 miles from my parents and brother in Detroit, and they're not getting any younger.

He likes Detroit because he's not playing in a hockey fishbowl like Vancouver where everyone watches you on and off the ice all the time. I've seen Lidstrom at my nephew's hockey game at Compuware in Detroit, and he was able to sit by himself and not get bothered too much. Not Bertuzzi in Vancouver. Vancouver is basically a one sport town; all hockey, all the time.

He also likes not having the pressure of being The Man, letting Pavs, Hank, and Nick have that responsiblity.

He also knows that he may not get picked up by anyone...or if he does, it could very well be a crappy unorganized club somewhere with no hope. In Detroit, there is always hope of hoisting The Stanley Cup.

Good for him. Glad its working out. Now if some of those close one's start going in for him.

Go Bert.
