Worst Hockey Game Experience

Rate this topic

Recommended Posts

I've had my fair share of bad expereince at hockey games ranging from getting spilled on by people around me to sitting next to the inappropriate fans that feeling swearing at the top of their lungs with children a row ahead of them is acceptable. But last night had to be one of the worst experiences ive had at a wings game, and im not just talking about the fact that the wings blew a 4-2 lead with a 1:34 to go in the 3rd.

I had a group of about 10 or so in the row infront of me. One of the guys in the group was very confused. He was from indsor, was wearing a New orleans Saints hat (at a hockey game) wasnt wearing any team jersey, and was rooting for the Coyotes (you decide out of which of those is worst). Anyways, this group of early to mid 20 year olds were the WORST people to sit behind at a hoceky game. All of the guys in the group were loud and swearing at one another giving eachother the finger (as some were rooting for the wings and the others were rooting for the coyotes). The girls really had no interest being at the game and were more worried about what the "after party" was going to be like, and of course girls dont know how to talk quietly, so we all got the 411 on that. To top it all off, the whole group was drunk (and when i say drunk i mean DRUNK) before the first period. One of the guys in the group (while standing up for no reason in the middle of the game) dropped his beer on the seat infront of him. Luckily noone was sitting infront of him, but 2 seats over were an elderly couple who got splashed with the beer. The guy didnt even apologize and just said "shouldnt of been sitting there" and then laughed with his friends.

Throughout the entire game they couldnt sit still, it seemed as though someone was standing up infront of us the entire game. And they didnt have hockey courtesy and wait for a whistle to get up, infact whenever the puck was in motion they would decide to get up. It got to the point where EVERYONE in my row nad people behind us would yell everytime they got up. Then at the second intermission they all got up and went down for more beer (or so we thought) and when the third period started they all came back with 2 beers in each hand. As if that wasnt bad enough, when they sat down, we could all smell Weed on their cloths. S now not only were they drunk they were high as kites too. You can imagine how abnoxious they were at this point. Of course they continued to get up throughout the entire 3rd period. Finally we all had enough and told them to sit down or leave the game. They then got upset with us and the girls said "screw this if all these people are going to be pricks i dont want to be here". One girl got really upset and started yelling at us saying "ill stand up the whole game right infront of you guys, how bout that?" and just kept talking and talking. They decided to all leave with 1:45 seconds left in the game and all stood up. Those of you who watched the game know that the wings lost it in the last 1:35 of the game so we missed theose two goals, then they sat back down for overtime once they saw they were leaving to soon. (of course the 1 coyote fan i nthe group was loud and screaming at everyone around him since the Coyotes tied it up and then eventually won)

It just made for a bad experience for the entire game. Luckily we had some cool people sitting next to us and behind us that we still had fun, but the people infront of us tried their hardest to stop us.

I never understood going to a game (paying the prices that tickets are these days) and getting so drunk that 1)you are a pest to everyone around you 2) you arent going to remember the game the next day anyways 3) you dont really have any interest watching the game anyways.

Not to mention there wasnt one sober sally in the bunch, so as to how they planned on getting back home to windsor safely is beyond me. Anyways, the point of this whole post has double meaning. 1) hopefully it raises awareness of common courtesy when in public, and 2) i wanted to see what other bad expereinces people have had. any takers?

I hate people like this. I can only imagine how frustrating that probably was. I was lucky enough to land some suite seats for a Griffins game last month and some of the people sharing it were seemingly only there to drink beer. Swearing at each other, shouting for no reason and dropping all sorts of expletives while 3 little boys sat in the seats in front. Obviously, your experience was much worse - but I agree with you.. What is the point of attending the game if you're going to be so wrecked you don't even have the slightest as to what happened or why you're there?

You can get hammered and make an ass out of yourself anywhere, I never understood why people have to ruin everyone else's night to have a decent time.

If there was nobody sitting in front of them you should of pushed them forward when they got up... That would of been real funny. You would of been a hero to the people around you! lol or, you should of "dropped" a drink right in front of them and told them oh well you shouldn't be sitting there.

I bet they wouldn't be talking sh*t if that happened.

These people are just the type who have never been taught a good lesson in life.

It will happen sooner rather then later.

That's a shame man. They don't respect the game or any one around them for that matter. The last Flames vs. Wings game I went to I had a group like that behind me. Lucky enough though when I watch hockey I get really zoned out to everything around me. At one point though we were killing a penalty and everytime we would dump the puck one of the idiots was yelling that it should be icicng. We continued to do clear the puck and he continued to yelling making a fool out himself. Finally I turned around and said to him, "You are on the ******* powerplay!"

If you are going to be loud and obnoxious then please at least pay attention to what's going on in the game. I have to say though the group that was behind me reminds exactly of the way you described the group you had in front of you. Girls not worried about the game but the part later. Guys being loud and there just to drink with no real knowledge of hockey yet screaming like they know what it is going on. They probably never watch hockey yet when the Flames score they feel they have the right to make fun of me and my buddy for having Wing's jeresy's on. Luckily the Wing's won. It really doesn't stop them though. Flame's fans are absolutely terrible and usually I have a bad experience when I go to watch the Wing's there everytime and it is only because of the other fans.

Guest Howard He Do It?!

I would have went to an usher. The little video before the game says you cannot be standing up all the time and that you cannot scream and yell constantly.

My worst experience was when I was 14 at a game in Chicago with my dad and grandpa. Wings won 5-0 and during the game several fights broke out around us. One guy told my 80 year old grandpa that if he stood up to cheer again, he'd push him over the edge of the upper level. The ushers did nothing to help out and I eventually had tail end of a beer poured on me. However, at the Winter Classic I had a totally different experience and the worst thing that happened was a few people talking s***.

WOW, I am ALMOST positive these were the same people we were behind a line for beer in during the first intermission. My gawd! I went with a good friend, and we only get to a couple of games/year anymore. We got in line for and these pansy-acting mid-twenties boys and girls were screaming in line in front of us, the one chick kept grabbing this guy and talking about getting away from "this stupid game" and getting stoned and then she would swing in a circle with her arms out, smacking other people in line in the face. I told her if it happened again she would have a twisted/sprained elbow (now, before the do-gooders get pissed about THAT, I have never hit/abused a woman...but, if a PERSON hits me, I will hit you back...I only gave this PERSON a second chance because of her femaleness...if you want to be equal, don't smack strangers and then hide behind the whole "femininity" gig.) She gave me the finger, but didn't do it to me again. Meanwhile, the line moved forwards and pansy-asses were playing together, so a bunch of guys in the NEXT LINE OVER cut in front of these idiots (who were too ripped to notice.) My buddy got pissed at all of them and we tried to go around them, then they got snippy. The guy kept randomly screaming "HOW LOW CAN YOU GO," followed by hilarious laughter by the whole group of retard stoners. As a result we missed the first couple of minutes of the second period.

Not a doubt in my mind they were a group of spoiled rich-kids. Probably drove Daddy's Escalade to the game. Haven't come that close to slugging a female since college when I briefly dated a crazy chick who would get mad and hit me in the face (no, I didn't hit her back, but I grabbed her arm and wrenched the f&%k out of it) when she would get pissed about school or some other thing.

Unfortunately, these are the same spoiled morons you encounter who stand on the coral while scuba diving, pass 300 cars trying to get off at an exit and then try to cut in at the last minute while giving YOU the finger, or smoke in non-smoking venues. They grow up to inherit Daddy's company, breed, and live in West Bloomfield, unfortunately. :ranting:

I'll just sick the ushers onto them right away (and usually they will behave, or they'll get kicked out pretty quickly)... the ushers at the Joe are pretty good, and will definitely remove people like this.

Sorry for your experience!

i was at the game on saturday, and i had amazing tickets. i didn't have as serious problem as you did, because it was the people behind me. the four people behind me, 3 guys and 1 woman, we almost unbearable. The one guy, all he did was bash the "new" style of hockey, and complained that the nhl needs to go back when "probert" ruled the earth. I understand that some people out there like the hitting and all the fighting, don't get me wrong, I LOVE fights and I LOVE the big hits. But what i love more is skill and the speed that these players play with.

the woman, who i could have killed, did her own version of play-by-play, using all the players first names like she was trying to impress everyone that she knew them. the worst is every player was "my guy Darren" or "my guy Henrik". My buddy could see i was getting hot under the collar and was like, just be happy those seats are filled. The problem was i was doing my best to follow the play and drown her out with my own thoughts. Because im not a Jedi, it was difficult and I was finding myself saying in my head, "shut the f*&^ up" the whole game.

i chalked the experience up to my own tolerance. (i'm not saying this to be true of anyone else) i guess the reason that I like to watch the games at home by myself is cause i may be a hockey snob, and i'm okay with that because if there is any other sport to be a snob with, this is the best. we fan's are a brotherhood, a highly opinionated brotherhood. Most have played the game, the love came with experience, the passion from blood, sweat and tears. we understand that hockey is a game of mistakes, and the team that usually commits the least and capitalizes on the most, wins the game. we look up ice during the break out, watch the play before it happens. we look behind the play in the nuetral zone, watching for potential cheap shots or breakaway threats. we watch the penalty clock expire and hope that we can get a breakaway out of the deal. when "s" hits the fan, we look to babcock for his reaction. we are hockey fans! and sometimes, i just need to wake up and enjoy the damn game!

Oh, the general public. It's too bad because I keep telling myself that 90% of the people out there are polite and respectful, however there are incidents like this that make me question that assumption. Unfortunately folks like this ruin it for everyone and are too ignorant to even know what asses they are making of themselves.

From your description i beleive it was the same group of retards haha. We were sitting in section 219 so if it was around there then it was more than likely them. However they were so far GONE that they may have walked around for a while before they realized they passed a few beer counters....

Haha i think ive sat next to that fan on more than one occasion. Dont get me wrong, i use first names every now and then, but i dont talk like i personally know the guy and that can sometimes be pretty annoying. not to mention, im at the game and im not blind, i can see the play, keep it to yourself haha. If i wanted a play by play i would have brought my portable radio and listened to Ken Kal lol.

I think all wings fans are snobs when it comes not only to the Wings but to hockey in general. I dont see anything wrong with that, I call it passion that alot of other teams fans lack. Long live the snobs!

I still beleive this to be true. Its just you very rarely notice those 90% of the public because they blend in. The 10% that dont share these traits stand out so it seems like a much higher percentage than it is....its just a shame that i end up sitting next to these 10% 9 out of 10 times haha

Did you say Hi to ESAD?

On honeymoon in Vancouver went to a Cancuks-Coyotes game, had a bloke sat behind me on a date with 2 (two) women! All 3 were drunk and spent the entire 1st period talking about the parties they'd been to recently. Thankfully the got up after the 1st and never came back. I was like "wtf, I thought Canadians worshipped hockey?" :D

Not the same sport I know, but in '95 I went to an England v Sweden football match at Elland Road, home of Leeds United. Playing for England was a Manchester United player - the fierce rivals of Leeds. Every time this player got the ball he was booed by the crowd. It was too much for one fan who stood up and berated those around him for booing an England player. Cue a bunch of meatheads standing up and screaming at him and accusing him of being a Man Utd fan. He grabbed the badge on his England shirt "I'm a ****ing England fan!"

"He's a Scum fan!! Get 'im!!!" Meatheads promptly beat 7 shades of s*** out of him

That really sucks man there is nothing worse than having a bunch of morons sitting near you ruin the game. My worst experience like that was probably a few years back when I was at the Joe for the CCHA finals and these four guys sitting in the row in front of us who were in their 40s were drunk out of their minds screaming at the players and swearing at the top of their lungs. The worst part is there were so many kids in the vicinity that were 10 or younger. Luckily(?) it got so bad that they were asked to leave the building and of course none of them were sober enough to drive so I just hope they didn't hurt anyone on their way home..

Sounds similar to every single game I've gone to in Columbus. We somehow ALWAYS end up sitting next to some idiot who has no idea what's going on in the game, but feels the need to yell the entire time anyway. Oh, and I was standing in line next to a guy wearing a Wings jacket and said, "Oh hey, fellow Wings fan, eh?" and he went, "Yeah, but I want Columbus to win. The Wings are done this year." Yeah.. look at where your precious Jackets are now... I'll never go to another game in that college city.

 Great thread

I've had a few....

-The Red Wings/Blues brawl in St. Louis back in early 2003, the Blues fans were picking fights with any Red Wings fan they saw. I didn't get into any altercations, but I saw at least on 7 occasions walking out a Blues fan pushing anyone wearing Red

-My first Red Wings game the day before Halloween in St. Louis in 1999, an overtime loss. Walking out of (then) Kiel Center, taking verbal abuse and then while driving on the street next to the arena, Blues fans looking in and pounding the windows because I had a Red Wings shirt on

-The home opener against Chicago, I had standing room tickets and for the first period stood at Chicago's blue line next to this lady who, every time a Detroit player got the puck, would shout, "C'mon (player name), woowoowoowoo!!" and "Get it! Get it!" every time a Chicago player had the puck. EVERY time. I was about ready to tear my ears off by the time the period was over. Not an obnoxious fan, just annoying as hell.

-This past November in the Florida OT loss game, there were people 3 rows in front of me so drunk off their ass that it would have been hilarious had there not been other people there. The constant swearing got so bad that at least on 3 occasions, people in different rows stood up and shouted that there were kids in the row and to shut the hell up.

That sucks op. I hate having any going-out experience (namely movies) ruined by some obnoxious pricks who should've just stayed at home.

The only thing I don't mind out of that is the swearing, even with children around. I'm a fairly vulgar person because I just like using those words, and I think people need to chill out and just accept them. They probably wouldn't even be a big deal if people just realized they're words (as long as they're not used in an obviously inappropriate sentence, if you catch my drift).

But back on topic, I remember one fan turned around and choked another during the Pistons last championship run in my same row. It was nuts. I thought somebody was going to be seriously injured, but the guy had enough sense not to tighten his grip on the other guy's throat.
