Chelios police video

this topic has turned into a beastly motherf***er.

noooo kidding! i say this in a nice way- but take it outside guys.

I believe the cop was doing his job the right way. It doesnt matter if you are a block away from where you live, its the fact that you drove there from where ever you were. but once you refuse the breathalizer, its over. cheli was definately pretty tipsy and driving was a dumb thing for him to do. the cop was trying to be liberal with everything but Cheli was just too impaired. i almost think the cop felt bad for Cheli but the law wins. and then to throw in that, i have four kids and i am chris chelios gig hoping for a break hurt him more. however, i think the cop didnt really let it bother him.

it doesnt matter who you are, you drive impaired and get caught, you are gonna get the punishment for it. and those who think they wont ever get caught, i hope you wise up.

You are seriously impaired after one beer? seriously? wow. You really need to lighten up btw. Many responsible people can have a beer or two and drive exactly the same. Which is why there is a limit at all.

Nevermind... I'm not going there.

Whatever bro. You're right and I'm wrong.

I champion the right for people to choose. If they choose to impair themselves, so be it but I would hope that they would choose a responsible method of doing so. I'm also sick of people jumping on drinking and driving like it is the only driving impairment. There are others that are just as bad.

You are never going to stop people from drinking and driving no matter how hard you try and that's a fact.

Yes, but it can be lessened and it has declined - from over 20,000 per year in the 80's to about 13,000 in 2008. That's significant change, but certainly not enough, especially if you are one of those 13,000 or related to them.* You are right to bring up other issues - texting and cell phones, because while progress continues on the drunk driving fatalities, these devices are the cause of new fatalities. It's insane. No stats I can find, and they do not tabulate it yet specifically, but they think that cell phone usage may account for 2-3000 deaths per year. Driving while texting is more "impaired" than most legal drinking blood limits. So, in terms of pure numbers cell/text is not killing as many, but in being just as bad in terms of how it impacts your driving, it is just as bad or even worse. The numbers will get worse before they get better. I have been guilty of all three at one time or another (drinking as a teen) and I have no problems admitting all make me a dangerous driver. My damn Blackberry is super addictive, but I absolutely will not touch it while driving. It's an easy habit to break if you try a little.

Oh, on topic, I think Chelios has nothing to be ashamed of in how he acted, but the video is, I am sure, embarrassing to him. Obviously a cop or some police official had a part in this getting out, correct? Who else would have access? The parent address being spoken is awful. Maybe they are in the phone book, but still, not cool.

Sidenote: One swedish beer is normally ateast 5.2alc% 0.5Litre (dunno how many oz and them f***ed up measurements) possibly up to 7.5alc% (some even 10-13%) while the strongest american beer in a club/pub/bar is like 4.5alc%

A half liter is 16.9 ounces.

A single bottle of beer is often 12 ounces.

If, as you claim, the strongest American beer is only 4.5% ABV (alcohol by volume), then one bottle of your claimed weak American beer would not get you drunk- and depending on how fast you drink it, you wouldn't even be impaired.

But, I will have you know, you are dead wrong about your claims of weak American beer. Just last night I was quaffing a fine American beer that was 10.2% ABV. The brewery we have here in town does big beers that exceed 13% ABV.

While what you claim may have been true until about 1985, it has changed dramatically- even to the point that European brewers are now learning from and following the lead of American craft brewers.

Feel free to head on over to the states. I'll even buy you a beer.

These videos are a matter of public record. Much like 911 calls.

The cop was great in this. 100% professionalism and should be applauded. Cheli's biggest mistake was driving after drinking maybe 1 to many. His 2nd mistake was refusing the breathalyzer. If he would have blown the cop might be more apt to let him walk home or drive him home and drop him off depending on the number he blew. Hell even if it was over the cop might let him go if the number wasnt to high he would have atleast been cooperation with the cop. But you outright refuse to blow and youve just written your ticket to be handcuffed and taken to the station even if you know your under the limit.

I've driven impaired before and almost everyone has in their lifetime. You say you haven't you're a liar!!!

I'm no liar, sir. I have one drink, once a year. That's on my birthday. My parents take me out for dinner, I have a Cosmopolitan. I don't even drive to the restaurant, so there's no chance I'd be driving home. If I have to take any doctor-prescribed medication that would impair me to the point where I'm advised not to drive......I don't drive. If I'm roadtripping with my sister and I start to get sleepy, I pull into a gas station parking lot and we switch and she'll drive. If she's tired, we find a hotel and camp out for the night. I don't even have the hand-eye coordination to text and drive at the same time, so I don't do that either.

So no, I have NEVER driven in an impaired state in my life, and I will continue to maintain that. You may think it's impossible, but it's not.

Neither have I.

My mother was pissed enough when she saw me having my first drink... AT AGE 22. I drink on occasion, but I actually don't like it. I get drunk maybe once a year and I always make sure I have a ride home (if I'm not getting drunk in my home).

My wife's uncle was killed when the car he was riding in was smashed into a tree by a drunk driver.

I'd like to think that there are many people out there like me and Electrophile that have much respect for their own life and the lives of others and don't drive drunk.

I had my first drink for my 21st birthday. I had no desire prior to that to drink and frankly......I don't have much desire to drink now and I'm nearly 28. I hate being around drunk people or people who are drinking and being loud and stupid, which is why while I love going to baseball games and concerts, I also cringe at the same time. It's like.....for f***'s sake, put the beer down and shut up. I'm not anti-alcohol, I'm anti-drunks.

Amen

I was stupid enough when I was younger and I thank God everyday that I was lucky enough not to hurt someone. Even though I was lucky, it's still one of my biggest regrets and embarrassments.

Good for y'all.

Now let me and others have a few drinks in a responsible manner without giving us a guilt trip or lecture about drinking and driving when we know we'll get home safely. We get it.

There's the flaw. You never KNOW you are going to get home safe. Even if you are stone sober. Every drink decreases your odds. That's the point.

Not lecturing. Just sayin'.
