2010 Winter Olympics - United States vs Norway (Group A)

I have a stupid question maybe someone here can answer.

From my understanding teams like Switzerland, Norway and Belarus qualify for the Olympics through tournaments. If that's the case, how do teams like Canada, Russia, and the USA qualify if all their players are in the NHL and the team is not competing in tournaments? Are they just automatically in or something?

IIHF rankings get them in automatically.

Better teams never qualify because it's based on the earlier performances in the olympics, I think. I don't think Switzerland is qualifying, because they've been good. I think it's something like the last of each group, who qualify.

Based on IIHF ranking or something?

Edit: Wikipedia linky.

I wonder how teams like Germany, Latvia, and Norway react when they win a spot to play in the Olympics? Do they jump around and spray each other with champagne? Because really when they qualify, they're really only qualifying to get their lunch handed to them by Canada, Sweden, Russia, Finland, etc..

I say that all in fun. It was like the one game playoff last year between the Tigers and Twins for the Central Division Title. Other than being named 2009 AL Central Champs, realistically they really were playing for being the team who would be swept by the Yankees in the first round.

Sweden only beat Germany 2-0 lastnight.

I don't know. He's still a pretty big moron. I don't think my opinion of him should change at all because he complimented a Red Wing.

With guys like Pierre and Milbury, I would take JR any day of the week.
