It's absolutely hilarious how many people throw the Wings under the bus because they lose pre-season games, and some by more than 3 goals. Don't people know the whole point of NHL pre-season is to match your prospects up against the other teams top talent? That's why teams play back-to-back and have completely different line-ups each night. You need these games to give your prospects and indication of where they need to be at to play against other teams top talent on and NHL roster night in and night out. It also depends on where your team was at last season, where they intend to be now and what kinds of players are in camp. The Leafs, for example, have a lot of new faces and a lot of guys coming off of years where they're looking to improve. You've got a group of forwards fighting for spots and it's a lot more wide open (in some ways) than a camp like the Wings where really only the 14th forward and 7th d spot are open (according to Holland and Babcock in the media). If you really look at the Wings camp the only spot that is really up for debate it's the 14th forward spot. No way Kindl isn't the 7th spot since he'd be exposed to waivers and certainly picked up. So the Wings are using camp as a means to tune up their roster players and look at younger guys who know they are GR bound. Where as the Leafs have many open spots. Their players are fighting not only for roster spots but the guarenteed roster players are fighting for depth position. Hudler and Modano and Salei make the team better. The Hawks have been ripped apart and have zero to no quality depth. All the other so called contenders out there have their weaknesses. Vancouver has Luongo and the Sedins who are choke artists in big games. The Sharks have no depth and Thornton always disappears. They can only win when the refs give them 10 5 on 3's a game The Kings are not ready yet as most of their player's balls have yet to drop. The Preds can compete for so long before they lose out. The Blues never live up to the hype of their idiot fans. The Avs are getting better but most of their success was in the first half of last season. As for the East, the Pens have Sid and Malkin and a bunch of ham and eggers. Philly has no goaltending. The Caps have no balls and are just a regular season stat machine. Brodeur can't carry the Devs anymore and they never score in the playoffs. Boston is good enough to make it to the playoffs but never do anything. Call me a homer (not Holmstrom) but come on man...the Detroit Red Wings are the best team in hockey! We will all enjoy seeing them prove it! All those other jealous douchebags can kiss my ass. i agree with everything you just said. that is why i started this topic, because the fans from other teams are insane if they think the wings are too old and "their team" is more of a legit cup candidate. with comments like "the wings time is done, it's the penguins time now"....look at the "your call" on TSN from the wings/pens pre-season game. priceless. i've already made my prediction and i'm 2 for the last 3 on my pre-season calls... 08 - wings 09 - wings (pens won...barf) 10 - hawks...yup, i called the hawks last year. sorry guys. 11 - i'm calling wings in 6 over Boston this year...yes, Boston. Wings depth now that the hawks dismantled is second to none. no one can match the wings depth on the NHL roster, as well as the deep prospect pool. teams get better when they scoop potential wings off waivers, ala leino, quincey. so for people to say the wings time is over is absurd. love your post dude! To the OP(and most others in the thread) the train of thought here is dead on - it means nothing in the grand scheme, especially since majority of nights our opponents have iced a FAR more "NHL" roster than us. I LOVE the pre-season, because it allows me to get a real genuine look at prospects that may be upwards of 3 or more years away from being NHL ready and I get to do a little bit of armchair scouting so to speak, and as an OVERLY geeky hockey guy, I enjoy this probably more than I should... This isn't exactly accurate. Teams are just as likely if not moreso to carry 13 forwards and 8 defenseman rather than 14 forwards and 7 defensemen. So basically what's being determined at camp is whether Kindl is to be kept or traded, and whether the Wings will carry 14-7 or 13-8, and who that will be. All negatives: -Jonathan Ericsson is headed for the Swedish Elite League. -The Hudler-Modano-Cleary line will rack up the minuses as every line they face will work harder than them. -Injuries, injuries and more injuries: Specifically, Franzen and Kronwall will eventually be donated to Wallside Windows. -Bertuzzi, now fat and happy with his contract, will go back to being a lazy floater. -Ritola will force his way into Tampa's top six and be more than solid. -Osgood will fall off the wagon. Again. -Jimmy will suffer a sophomore slump hard just like any other player, if not worse. -Kindl... Hoho... Just you all wait. Us GR fans know what we know when we know it. -Rafalski will constantly confuse whoever is on his team as he commits shocking giveaways. Yes, shocking.
