I can't speak to the safety of the area because I don't live there, but when I was visiting a friend of mine lived within walking distance and would regularly walk there. It did seem safe IMO. I have friends in Scottsdale, which is pretty close, and they compare the area they live in to Birmingham or Bloomfield Hills. That's like saying Royal Oak is like Taylor without knowing what either was like. That said... Glendale definitely isn't the worst place in the world. I would personally suggest a car though, since there isn't much else in the immediate area but the arena. The arena is right off of one of two major loop freeways in the phoenix area, so getting around should be easy w/ a vehicle even if you stay in Phoenix. webwing91 4 Report post Posted April 15, 2011 It is plenty safe. About 3-5 miles east it starts to get a little shadier, but nothing like a bad area in Detroit. Anything north of the arena is brand new, safe neighborhoods and areas. South of the arena and west into Avondale is safe too, and you're starting to get into the desert at that point so the hotels are probably a bit cheaper. The Renaissance hotel is right next to the arena, but it is quite pricey. I ask that as a visitor to the area, you be respectful while at the game. Cheer for the Wings, wear red, partake in some good natured ribbing, have a good time. But do not get completely obnoxious and belligerent at the game. These games have some of the worst behavior I've ever seen. The only real danger is getting into a fight at or outside the game. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Wings_Rule_1010 4 Report post Posted April 15, 2011 I went for the home opener this season. Spent a few nights at a hotel within walking distance. The surrounding area is beautiful. A shopping area with lots of bars and restaurants. My sister and I didn't rent a car, just used a taxi for the airport. There were a few hotels within walking distance. We stayed at the sheraton, which was nice. Theres a hotel called the renaissance, which is literally right next to the arena, but is also a little bit more money. ifonlyicouldskate 11 Report post Posted April 15, 2011 I was there for the March 5th game. It is safe, parking was free there are plenty of bars and restuarants aound the 2 areans right there. I was very impressed with the setup and can't figure out why they would build and nice new stadium like that when the odds are are high that the team is not even going to stay. I was staying on the other side of Phoenix in Mesa, So I wasn't looking for lodging. Jobing.com arena is actually in glendale/avondale area. I wouldn't wear your jersey, not out of fear! I went to the Phoenix area for the first time ever about a year and a half ago to see my alma mater play in the Fiesta Bowl, which is where the Arizona Cardinals play, right across the street from Jobing.com Arena. And by luck of the draw, the Wings were playing the Coyotes just a few days before the bowl game so I went to the area twice. There's not much in that immediate area other than the stadiums and a few lodging areas and places to eat, but there should be enough to keep you entertained there if you want to do anything before/after the game (large movie theater, decent restaurants, it's just in a very compact area). I've never been there, but my friends who do live there say the suburbs of phoenix are nice, so I'm assuming Glendale isn't some crime-ridden craphole where everyone's packing heat. To be honest, nothing I saw while living in Phoenix would compare to parts of Detroit or south LA. I didn't spend much time around the airport to the south tho.
