Just would like to discuss interests and needs following this season. The player who intrigues me the most is Erik Karlsson and whether Ottawa will let him get away. Would rather see him in a Wings jersey more than any other player in the from another team.

I'll pass on a defenseman who is -30, despite the fact he scored over 40 points. Also 50 PIM with no fights makes it seem like he's undisciplined. I admit I can't ever remember seeing him play myself, but with the amount of picks we would have to give up to sign away a guy with those types of offensive numbers we need to be really picky about all the small things. This type of signing would be a franchise defining moment and the only two RFAs I feel confident about investing that much in are Drew Doughty and Shea Weber. However I'd rather just keep all the picks and sign Ryan Suter who I believe is the best of the three and also the only one that won't cost any assets.

Summer of 2012 - Wings welcome newest team members Zach Parise and Ryan Suter.

Thousands of Wings fans change their pants.

Believe me, I'd be among those changing my pants, but do you really think we'll have the money to sign both? I've been hearing the salary cap is due to drop by 3-4 million with the new CBA, Kronwall is due a significant raise, and Stuart will be due a moderate raise, at least to keep up with inflation. Add in 7.5-8 for Suter (based on Weber) and I really don't see where the cash to sign both?

If the cap drops due to decreased revenue share under a new CBA, current salaries would also be rolled back, like in 2005. Wings already have $6m in space, with possibly Lidstrom, Holmstrom and Bertuzzi coming off the books after this year. It seems possible, but I haven't started holding my breath yet.

The Wings are sitting on 6M in cap space right now. Carry that over to 2012.

My numbers aren't perfect but I think Holland could swing it.

Subtractions - Lidstrom, HUDLER, Homer, Bert, and Commodore (if need be - as in, if it means getting Suter). = 13.25M.

Approx Total with cap space carried over = 13.25M + 6M = 19.25M

Additions - Suter (7.5) Parise (6) Smith (0.9M) Tatar (0.9M) UFA forward (1M) = 16.3M + Kronwall will get a 2M raise + Stuart will get make 4.5M = 19M

Parise - Datsyuk - Cleary

Franzen - Zetterberg - Abdlekader

Mursak - Filpulla - Tatar

UFA (1M)- Helm - Eaves

Miller - Emmerton

Suter Kronwall

Smith Stuart

White Ericsson

Kindl

Howard

+ Back up

And IF the cap goes down by 3M, not counting roll-backs, Stuart could be released, freeing up 4.5M.

Suter Kronwall

White Ericsson

Kindl Smith

Lashoff

Admittedly not as appealing. OR keep Stuart and trade Ericsson.

Edit: Personally, I'd rather take Parise's 6M and spread it out over 2 forwards for better depth, but whatevs.

Suter will not get $7.5m... Weber is much higher profile and was awarded that over a single year. Suter could be had on long-term contract, from a competitive team, for a cap hit of $6m, IMO.

Detroit Red Wings - CapGeek

As it stands, next off season the Wings will have 13 players signed for $34.9M. That leaves them with (at the current cap limits) $29.4M in space and needing to sign 10 players.

It's definitely not out of the question that the Wings could get one of the prized free agents (Suter or Parise) should they be available.
