GMRwings1983 8,804 Report post Posted November 28, 2011 Didn't the Canes already fire Maurice like 10 years ago? Seriously, hockey is such a freaking weird sport when it comes to coaching. Teams rehiring coaches who they already fired. Or how about Larry Robinson being an assistant in Jersey. Didn't he coach them to a Cup in 2000? Why is he just an assistant now? This revolving door seems more common in the NHL than the other leagues.

This revolving door seems more common in the NHL than the other leagues. It wasn't even 10 years ago actually. I think being an NHL coach just has high turnover and getting fired really isn't as big of a deal as other jobs. It's like being in advertising. I know people who've been fired or quit multiple times and end up at the same agency. For many teams firing the coach seems like the management equivalent of switching goalies. Hoping it changes momentum or something, but doesn't mean they think the starter is terrible.

Is it because coaching is not as important in hockey as in other sports? It sure seems that way when teams re-hire coaches who they fired not too long ago. Maybe your goalie analogy makes sense. Also, isn't Dave Lewis an assistant coach there? Edited November 29, 2011 by GMRwings1983
P. Marlowe 748 Report post Posted November 29, 2011 Didn't the Canes already fire Maurice like 10 years ago? Maurice was with Whalers/Hurricanes first 1996-2004 and then 2008-2011. Also, isn't Dave Lewis an assistant coach there? Yeah.
Guest Crymson Report post Posted November 29, 2011 Being fired as a coach in professional sports is more a question of "when" than "if." Barry Trotz and Lindy Ruff are the two main exceptions in the NHL. 1 IllinoisRedWingsFan reacted to this

mmamolo 287 Report post Posted December 1, 2011 Maurice is a nice enough guy but honestly, he's a lazy coach. I live in a suburb of Toronto and there's a bar I used to watch the occassional Leaf game at and no joke, on night's the Leafs lost Maurice would show up at the bar within 45 minutes of the end of the game. The suburb I live in is 30 minutes from the ACC on normal traffic conditions. After a Leaf game the highways are brutal.
