chaps80 1,591 Report post Posted March 24, 2015 It's more of a player safety thing, they don't want people swinging around jagged pieces of metal I get that, but goalies can use broken sticks until a stoppage in play? Makes no sense.
toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted March 25, 2015 Goalie's being able to use a broken stick makes "some sense", but it is still dangerous, so I'm not sure why they are allowed until stoppage in play. I guess the rationale is as follows: They aren't allowed to go to the bench to get a new stick like other players (this doesn't address the safety concern though + why not let them go to the bench....if they want to take the risk and leave their net....their problem) There is much less risk with the goalie using a broken stick than other players, this is clearly true, but still, there is a risk so why not have the same rule for everyone? 1 chaps80 reacted to this
cprice12 117 Report post Posted March 25, 2015 I see no issue with the goal. When a player breaks his stick and doesn't drop it, the refs more often than not warn the player before they call a penalty. The stick break and goal all happened so quick it is irrelevant really. You see no issues with the goal? The refs do not give warnings. If a player plays a puck with a broken stick, and the ref sees it, it is always a penalty. ALWAYS. Even if the player doesn't know the stick is broke. They may yell at the player to drop his stick immediately (because the player might not know it is broke) and if he doesn't drop it right away, it is a penalty...but there is never a warning given. A player can't even skate around with a broken stick. He has to drop it immediately or it is a penalty. It doesn't matter if the play happened fast or not, or if he was slashed or not (he wasn't), the correct call is still a no goal and a penalty.
joesuffP 1,746 Report post Posted March 25, 2015 I remember Lids got a penalty once for using his stick after the knob had broken off. Could have just been the tape actually, he had no idea.
Smite 399 Report post Posted March 26, 2015 Win some lose some, I agree if it was a Blues that scored I would be upset. I do not fault the ref's to miss the broken stick though. Abbys stick breaks at the lower hand in the middle. Some of the compisite sticks are like wet noodles. Play it at full speed not knowing the out come I don't see anyone seeing the stick break when it did. No Blues player approached the closest ref after the goal was scored. (at least from the TV angle I saw) I heard Backus complained but it was probably after the Blues video review team alerted the bench.
paulwoodsfan 52 Report post Posted March 26, 2015 I've been scouring the web for proof but can't find it, but I am positive that about a decade ago, a Wings afternoon game (I think it was against the Stars) ended in OT, NBC wrapped up the broadcast and went to golf, and then they had to go back to the game because the OT goal was disallowed and OT resumed. Does anyone else remember this happening? Unfortunately I can't recall who scored the disallowed goal.
Dano33 41 Report post Posted March 27, 2015 (edited) I've been scouring the web for proof but can't find it, but I am positive that about a decade ago, a Wings afternoon game (I think it was against the Stars) ended in OT, NBC wrapped up the broadcast and went to golf, and then they had to go back to the game because the OT goal was disallowed and OT resumed. Does anyone else remember this happening? Unfortunately I can't recall who scored the disallowed goal. I think it was during a shootout. Turco threw his stick during Zetterberg's attempt. Initially it was ruled accidental and no goal, but then the refs decided the stick throwing was intentional and gave Hank the goal to tie it up. I think the Wings ended up losing anyway.
