The contract is too long for a player of his caliber, on a team with a very easily tapped replacement (AA), for too many years, with a player with injury issues on a team with lots of players with on long term contracts with injury issues. Holland right now is the anti-Bowman. Instead of learning from successful teams on how they deal with the cap, namely trading middling players when it comes close to their paydays and trusting the youth/cheap players to fill in the gaps, Holland has signed or tried to sign every impending FA in recent memory to lifetime contracts. This has left Detroit being the literal worst team this season in dollars spent per win, and will cripple the team down the road when it comes to negotiating with future players. See we are talking about two different things, you are talking about Detroit's cap situation as whole, I am talking about Helm's contract in a bubble. I even said that in my post, so to counter me with "how the world works" is redundant as that was not the context in which I was even speaking. Also, the system you talk about that Holland should replicate only works when you have elite talent to compliment with the young talent with (ie. Crosby/Markin/Letang, Toews/Kane/Keith/Seabrook, or Kopitar/DD etc. We cannot mimic them, because at the moment we dont have elite talent like them. 2 e_prime and krsmith17 reacted to this

Helm can skate and check and thats about it and his skating is starting to decline. Putting Helm on a line with Benn and Seguin is like having steak and potatoes but with a side of corn pudding. You just dont mix that nasty thing with those other two great dishes. He's also on a low scoring team with guys who can't finish. He was doing pretty good with Vanek earlier this season. That sucked, I was really curious to see if that Helm/Nyquist/Vanek line could have kept it going, but then Blashill split them up and Vanek got injured anyways. They really seemed to click. That's the thing with lines, its all about chemistry. 1 chaps80 reacted to this
