FireCaptain 563 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 Eddie Olcjhdfkshjgdfek (however you spell his name) predicting that Detroit is a litte overrated and the Blackhawks could prove that. This was taped on 3/30 according to NBC. http://nbcsports.msnbc.com/id/22825103/vp/23869143#23869619 After tonights game... nope, he's still wrong.
Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 He's the color analyst for the Blackhawks (when they are actually on TV), so it shouldn't come as any surprise that he'd have his rosy glasses on when talking about them.
Redwingsfan18 1 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 The Wings will be fine! Everyone here is so pessimistic. They're playing much more timid so they don't get hurt, thats all. First game of the playoffs, if they look as bad as they did tonight, then panic people.
Rice 42 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 (edited) I remember after the last-place Flyers killed the Wings last year a lot of analysts were saying the Flyers "exposed" the Wings as overrated and soft. Same type of thing with the 'Hawks. Edited April 3, 2008 by ARice89
FireCaptain 563 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 I re-read my title and realized that people might think I was/am worried. I'm not. I was trying to be sarcastic while referring to yet another anti-Detroit article/segment. The Wings will be fine! Everyone here is so pessimistic. They're playing much more timid so they don't get hurt, thats all. First game of the playoffs, if they look as bad as they did tonight, then panic people. BlueMonk 102 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 The Blackhawks would be the easiest possible opponent for the Red Wings. Every fan of the Wings should be hoping, praying and sacrificing small animals to the deity of their choice that the Hawks squeak in and face them in round one. Nev 1,085 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 Having had the misfortune to have watched the Blackhawks coverage almost every week this year, I can confirm that Olcyk is the most outrageous homer. To listen to him talk about the 'Hawks and their players you'd think they were the '82 Islanders

Every fan of the Wings should be hoping, praying and sacrificing small animals to the deity of their choice that the Hawks squeak in and face them in round one. This might be a bit of an overstatement, but I'd much rather face Chicago or Nashville in round one than the alternatives (Vancouver or Calgary). Regular season records mean nothing in the playoffs (remember the 1-3 record against SJ last year or, say, the 3-1 record against Colorado in 1996?). More important are the goalies, travel schedule, and the physicality of the opponent. I'll take a trip to Chicago against the Bulin wall over a trip to Western Canada to play Kipper or Luongo any day of the week. TTownBigMan1980 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 To be honest, I am a bit worried. Our supposed No. 1 Goalie, sucked a big one tonight, they looked like they had no fire. Whatever team they do end up playing in the 1st round has been in playoff mode for weeks already. They have been playing for their lives, and the Wings have just floated on in, as usual. I'm not in panic mode yet, but I am a little concerned for their mental state right now. Babs has got to kick them in the ass and get them going, especially after tonight's pathetic performance. I agree. The Wings took some stupid penalties last night too.
redwings56 1 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 (edited) no worries, when Sammy gets back everything will work itself out and the Wings will win the Cup. haha Right? this last game must have something to do with Sammy being out of the lineup. I am pulling for Chicago right now, for last couple weeks actually. Nobody in the East - Ottawa hometown - is even mentioning that they have a chance. well Ottawa fans are ignorant anyway. Stupid fckig St Louis on Versus 2 nights ago. 3-0 lead over Nashville and they lost. I now just realized how much that is killing Chicago. edicius 3,269 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 Olczyk never says anything of substance. Just watch him on the NBC broadcasts to realize that. He's just bitter because he couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag with the Pens.

Every fan of the Wings should be hoping, praying and sacrificing small animals to the deity of their choice that the Hawks squeak in and face them in round one. I don't know Monk. People thought that of the Oilers a few years back and look how that turned out. On paper and logically the Wings should easily move on to the second round. But hockey is a funny game when it come to confidence, desire, etc. One of the last teams I want to play if I'm the Wings is the Hawks if they squeek into 8th. Imagine the high that team is on in that situation. They have nothing to lose, they've owned the Wings this season. In fact, they have to beat the Wings on Sunday to get into the playoffs. They would have a 6-2 season against the Wings and will have beaten them twice in a week to get into the playoffs. You think they're gonna be scared of the Wings? Nope, don't want to see that as a Wings fan. That just sounds like an early exit. But not to worry. They are too far back. Vancouver will beat Calgary on Saturday and the Sunday game won't mean a thing to the Hawks.
Andy Pred 48 337 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 just rewind to last year, we lost our last away game in Chicago before putting on a show at the Joe in our last game of the season, 7-2 i think. Yesterday was a bad day at the office, nothing more. Chill folks.
BlueMonk 102 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 The Wings have crappy records against a bunch of non-playoff teams in the Central division. You can choose to believe that's because those teams "have their number," or you can figure it's because they didn't get up for their games against those teams during the regular season. The playoffs are another matter entirely. If the Wings can't get up for a playoff series, they deserve to lose.

Who cares if we lose against non-playoff teams so long as we keep beating the good teams?

calfan 0 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 just listening to Barry Melrose on ESPN Radio...thinks San Jose is the best team in the West followed by Anaheim and then Detroit...I can't wait to see him proven wrong It will be interesting. No doubt they win the trade deadline deal of the year award. They have all of the ingredients to be the best in the west and they have played really well down the stretch. But there's still that niggling past history of playing below expectations. Will this be the year? We'll know in a month's time.
StevieY9802 6 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 I'll admit I'm worried because of all the injuries and some of these guys not being on top of their games when they come back. Barrie 900 Report post Posted April 3, 2008 Actually I think the Wings are being over looked this year. Apparently our Goaltending is questionable, our offense isn't spread out enough, we aren't gritty enough, we're to old, etc. No one is mentioning we made it to the Conference Finals last year and we're a better all around team than last year. Same type of thing with the 'Hawks. Speaking of Philly......does anyone also remember 1997? (The Detroit Red Wings were about to be humiliated in the Finals according to the media.) Philly was changing between Hextall and Snow after each shot on goal by game 4.

I couldn't agree more. I work at an ice rink, and every single one of the guys here has picked detroit to lose in the first round for one of those reasons. But I told em: mark my words boys, even if we don't win the cup, we sure as hell aren't losing in round
