Detroit Pistons Season Thread

The Pistons bench puts up good shooting percentages collectively, and they add a lot of assists and rebounds. But they don't play enough minutes to contribute a lot of points.

Detroit is distancing itself from the rest of the East. Indy is underachieving and the Heat are flat out mediocre without Shaq.

I'm sorry but our bench still stinks.

It is awful thumbdown.gif

Are you serious? We have a pretty good bench. We have McCdyss who is a great replacement for Sheed. We have Carlos Arroyo who is a great replacement for Billups, and once Hunter comes back after christmas we will have a great backcourt bench with him, arroyo, and delfino. When Delfino gets into the game he does a great job in replacing Rip. And Mo Evans has done a great job of replacing Tayshaun. The only position that we need to get better in replacing, is our Center position. But even so, No-one can replace Ben Wallace. Next offseason, Joe Dumars needs to find a 7"0 foot Center who can average at least 5 points per game.

Yes I admit I completely forgot about Lindsey Hunter. He is a master at the defensive end and good for 15-20 minutes a night. A very valuable backup for Billups.

However so far this season McDyess has struggled to find his shot, and therefore the bench has been lacking. Arroyo has been decent and seems to be improving with each outing. Evans hasn’t been as instrumental as I would have liked.

And all the talk about how Delfino and Darko were going to play this season, they are hardly seeing the court. Not that its an issue with Darko, because I would rather anyone than him out there.

As long as everyone's healthy and playing to their capabilities, there isn't a single team in the league, Spurs included, that the Pistons can't find a weakness in the matchups and exploit the hell out of it.

But Flip still needs to trust the bench more. They're better than most benches in the league, and Dice, Mo Evans, Delfino, Arroyo and yes even Darko need to get more playing time. 35+ minutes a night for every starter is going to wear them down and put them at risk of injury.

Well, we are quickly approaching one of the games I've been looking forward to since the start of the season here. Pistons vs. Spurs on Christmas.

What is everyone's thoughts? The Pistons are going to come out HARD is my gut feeling. They are mad about losing game 7 last year and I think that is a big reason they are 15-2 right now. Going against the Spurs is just going to "spur" them on (*groan*). Unlike some of the games this season where the Pistons have flipped the switch in the third or fourth to put a game away, I think they are goinging to come out with the switch "flipped" from the opening minute.

That said, I also think that the Spurs are the only team that can play with Detroit when the Pistons are doing their thing. If both teams bring their A game expect it to be close. But I think it will be a Piston win, as they want to send a message saying "that title was ours last year, and we'll be taking it back."

They have something to prove to the Spurs and the world...no way they lose that game at home. They are averaging around 100+ points per game at home plus that place is going to be LOOOOOOOUUUUDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD. If you have ever been to the Palace and it was a huge game....you know what I am talking about. I thought the Joe got loud......the Palace puts any place to shame.

i was at the cup clinching game against the carolina hurricane at the joe...it was very loud. as loud as that was, it's NOTHING compared to the palace for ANY meaningful game! i love it!

the Palace is a college atmosphere....I think that's the highest sort of praise you can give a building....when the crowd is rocking and Big Ben is chiming and the announcer is yelling DEEEEEEEEEEEETROIT BAAAAAAAAAASKETBAAAAALLL!!! it's right up there with Cameron. very few places can get you pumped up watching on TV....the Palace is one.

Ok, when you get chills thinking about the palace when reading two posts............you KNOW it's something special. Rip ain't lyin' when he says they have the best fans in the world.

The best is when they announce the players though....even if you are just watching it that WILL give you the chills if you are a Pistons fans.

"I don't know what's going on," a visibly frustrated Wallace said after getting six rebounds and four points (on three shots) in a 92-78 loss Monday. "I don't even know what my role is. I am just out there running around. … I am sick of this …"

It might have something to do with his role in the offense, which is shrinking. When asked whether he felt as if he wasn't involved enough offensively, he ended the interview.

"I don't have no more comment," he said. Saunders acknowledged that might be part of the problem, part of the reason Wallace feels as if he's running around without much purpose on offense."

Frustrated Wallace unsure of role

One loss in how many games and he's getting frustrated? Please, they win tonight and he's fine again. At first I thought it was Rasheed and instantly thought, well, here comes KG tongue.gif

The Ben Wallace thing is interesting, because it's something I've noticed for several games now. The thing is, Ben is injured, but he won't use that as an excuse. It could be as simple as that. Maybe he is frustrated with his role in the offense, but if so, he's going to have to get used to it. They need him patrolling the paint, which he hasn't been doing lately. The offense is running too well to make significant changes.

I've been bored so I thought I would analyse the Pistons bench. I would love feedback as to what you think. Enjoy.

Antonio McDyess: Averaging 19.4 minutes, 5.5 points (43.1%), 4.7 rebounds.

His stats are significantly down on last season (9.6 points compared to 5.5) and this has been as a result of some very poor shooting performances. He has struggled to find a rhythm, and will need to pick up his play to be the efficient 6th man the Pistons are counting on.

Carlos Arroyo: Averaging 14.3 minutes, 4.1 points, 3.4 assists.

Arroyo has been much maligned ever since he arrived in Detroit. He is crucial to the Pistons as he is needed to spell Chauncey while at the same time running the offence. He has been criticized for ruining the flow of the offence and struggling on defense. Whether people like it or not, he plays a vital role in the success of the Pistons.

Carlos Delfino: Averaging 8.7 minutes, 2.9 points (47.4%), 1.5 rebounds.

In my opinion, Delfino is a very valuable player to this team as he can pretty much do it all out there. From his limited minutes, he has clearly shown that he can score, while shooting at a good clip. He is very strong at driving to the hoop, and he is an underrated rebounder. However Saunders doesn’t seem to use him enough, which I feel is a big mistake. He could be the missing piece of the puzzle. All he needs is time to make a contribution.

Maurice Evans: Averaging 16.4 minutes, 5.7 points (44.4%), 2.9 rebounds.

Mo Evans has been quite serviceable for the Pistons. He has been used primarily as a backup for Tayshaun and he has provided some energy off the bench. He, along with McDyess, is the first used to sub the starters. He will be required to maintain this role throughout the course of the season.

Dale Davis: Averaging 4.8 minutes, .3 points, .8 rebounds.

Davis was signed as a back-up for the two Wallaces and McDyess. So far he has been used very sparingly. The ploy is to unleash him come playoff time, so he won’t be used much during the regular season. He is a solid defender and will most likely be seen as another body to wear out Shaq and Duncan. I would love to see him used a bit more often, maybe giving him 10 minutes a game, just to get an indication of where he is at.

Lindsey Hunter: Yet to play a game.

The forgotten man of the Pistons. When he returns he will be counted on to provide solid defense and knowing Hunter this shouldn’t be a problem. The only concern is getting him into shape before the playoffs.

Milicic, Acker, Johnson & Maxiell don't warrant reviews.

find it hard to believe that you are not including a review of darko. Darko has played almost the same amount of games as Delfino.

Antonio- Has had his ups and downs, he was going there for a good few weeks and has dropped off

Carlos Arroyo- Would contribute a bunch more if he wasn't so concerned with scoring all the time. He can shoot the ball well no doubt, just shoots too much, he is a much better passer.

Delfino- He's going to be good, he hustles when he is in there. I expect much more out of him in the future.

Mo Evans- Provides INSTANT energy and scoring off the bench, he can shoot from anywhere and drive. Can't ask much more from him.

Dale- Just recently started to get some playing time, he will be a very viable back up for Ben. Saw him swat out a shot two games ago with ease, he's got that silent assassin mean streak in him too which I like.

Lindsey- You need instant ball hawking and defense? Call Lindsey's #

Darko- He's 20

Nobody will beat the Pistons in the playoffs this year. NOBODY. I don't give a flying f*ck how good San Antonio is. They are good no doubt but the Pistons are simply too good of a team to match up with, Chauncey alone can get them a few games himself, he is the best complete point guard in the NBA. Ask any analyst and they all will agree that the Pistons have the best back court and front line. They are too fast and too long and too good defensively and they are scoring over 100+ points per game at home. They will get home court advantage throughout the playoffs including the championship and you might as well hand them the trophy. The only team that has a small chance to take down Detroit in the East is Miami.

And it's the way they are beating these teams as well, it almost looks as if they are bored out there. They know how good they are but they will never show it or gloat about it...

It's a shame all the analysts had Miami vs San Antonio...

"The Pistons got off to a quick start, leading 36-23 with 1:37 left in the first, but then went nine minutes without a field goal."

And they scored 109 points scared.gif

NOBODY

From the ESPN board:

"ATL gets Darko and Mo Evans

IND gets Al Harrington

DET gets Ron Artest

Would you do it???"

Artest is good enough....but who in the right fukkin' mind would want him coming to Detroit? If the brawl never happens MAYBE but that dude is just out of his mind.

Also from the board:

"Hold UP....Id do the Trade but u have to switch some people around tho!

ATL: Ron Artest

IND: Darko Mo Evans

DET: Al Harrington, 2nd round Draft Choice

Now that would work for me..."

Hmmmmmmmmm...
