a couple concerns...

i think we rely on the 3-pointer a wee bit too much. sure, it's fall now. but i hope we can still smash teams when the long ball is not falling.

and i wish we rebounded better as a team. ben is the only reliable rebounder...tay and sheed rebound when they want to. overall, we don't rebound too good. seems like we get out rebounded on most nights.

I think about both those things, too. Really, the rebounding and defense in general is a few notches below what it's been. I'm wondering if it's a symptom of the new offensive system. Being outrebounded but leading the NBA in offensive efficiency might not be a bad tradeoff. My concern is whether or not the Pistons can sacrifice defense and rebounding and points in the paint and still go deep into the playoffs. I'm not saying it can't be done, but it's unfamiliar territory.

The other possibility is that the Pistons haven't played four quarters of tough defense yet because they haven't had to. With a 20-3 record, that's a possibility. The Spurs and Heat games will be a good test. If they can win those games, then I'll believe that this fast start is for real. Sometimes, when they win without really locking down on defense except in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, it feels like they won the game with smoke and mirrors. They relied so heavily on defense and outrebounding other teams last year, it just feels funny to see how they go about it this year.

The three pointer thing is strange. Even Rasheed and Rip are just lights out with it right now. That's got to do with the offensive system, getting those guys open shots. But I'd like to see them get more points in the paint. This team is built to be physical in the paint. Getting outrebounded and outscored in the paint bothers me. Maybe I"m being too picky. 20-3 is really hard to argue with, I guess. But I'm a glass half empty guy at heart, I guess.

one other thing...

i know it's been brought up before...but i gotta say, the bench really is a concern. why should the bench be a concern when we're 20-3? it's NOT about playing time...believe or not, the guys are playing the same amount of minutes per-game as last year...

here's why the bench scares me: what happens when we get in foul trouble? i'm gonna guess that games against the heat and spurs might become dog fights...and some playoff games are gonna become dog fights. it'd be sad to lose a game cuz our bench couldn't hold the fort down when our top guns pick up some early fouls...

if it ever becomes a battle of attrition, i think both miami and san antonio have much better benches...we'll lose battles of attrition to them...

I don't think the bench is that bad. I just don't think Flip trusts them as much as he could. Mo Evans is solid, of course, as is Dice. Lindsey Hunter is about to come back from his foot injury and he can always be counted on for solid minutes. Delfino is really start to pick it up. And Dale Davis is this year's Elden Campbell. Need some good hard defense without worrying about the fouls, Davis will be great off the bench for that. No, I think the bench is fine, and really, there isn't a starting five that can touch the Pistons'.

Pistons haven't often been forced to play four full quarters, but they've been in some dogfights. They beat Portland the other night despite playing their fourth game in five nights. And don't underestimate the focus of that team. They really are playing with a purpose. Pity the poor eighth-seed in the East....the Pistons will be locked on and there's no way the Pistons' first opponent will come within 20 points in any of four games.

San Antonio Spurs @ Detroit 12/25/05, 12:30 EST on ABC

It should be a great one. I hope the pistons can ruin the Spurs Christmas with a win 2morrow.

Time to trade Arroyo. Still thinking he's All-Star Arroyo tryin' to drive and do all this fancy s**t with the ball in the lane. Travels, Spurs come back and get 4 points all becuase of that stupid play.

Pipe dreamin' here, it's not likely to happen, but how much fun would it be to not even reach 10 losses?

I'd like to see a 36-5 start. The Tigers went 35-5 in 1984 and it was a huge deal.....so I'd like to see the Pistons top that. (After the Tigers went 35-5, they got swept in a series in Seattle or Oakland.)

It was a nice win over the Spurs, more for the defense and rebounding I saw than the actual result. Without Ginobili and on the road for a Christmas game, the Spurs had a tough task in front of them trying to win this game. But outrebounding a good rebounding team 57-30 is impressive, no matter what. That kind of validates what I suspected about the Pistons, which is that they're only playing defense part time because they don't have to play it all the time. Now that they can score, not every game needs to become a defensive dogfight. But last night, they played tough for all 4 quarters, and they shut the Spurs down well.

Lot of Spurs fans playing the this game didn't matter at all card. Well, considering the Spurs lost to two god awful teams in Atlanta and New Orleans and have 6 loses I think that game did matter. I have a funny feeling Dallas might spell upset.

I have a feeling the Heat might take this game tomorrow night. They desperately need to get it together after a disappointing start, and they can make a big statement with a win at The Palace. The Pistons, meanwhile, could possibly be taking the game lightly. That sounds ridiculous, as highly touted as the Heat have been, but I think they really put a lot more stock in that Spurs game then they're going to put into this Heat game.

I don't think the Pistons have taken a single game lightly all year. That, more than the gaudy record, is what scares the opposition.

Went snowboarding for the past 3 days....

Did I mention that nobody is going to beat the Pistons in the playoffs? The more they keep winning the more I actually do agree with that they can take the Spurs out in 4-5 games assuming they get passed Dallas.

"That team has been together -- we haven't," Heat center Alonzo Mourning said.

sad.gif AWWWWWWWWWWWWWW IS POOR BABY GONNAAA CRYYYYY?

27+ games isn't together? Amazing how many excuses come out of opponents when they play Detroit.
