A friend from Latvia … told me that (Wings prospect) Igor Grigorenko is definitely not the same player he was before car accident. He described him as a very average player, even for Russian league standards, and that he is definitely not NHL star material anymore. … Same friend told me some years ago that Zetterberg and Datsyuk will be NHL stars, so he knows what he is talking about. ___________________________________________________________________ Any opinions on this? I doubt he makes it here too -- lost his extra gear -- I doubt hudler too, he is a three speed in a ten speed world.

I looked at the stats of the team grigorenko plays on and its downright atrocious. The team only averages to score just 2 goals a game, one of the worst teams offensively as well as overall in the Russian Superleague. Grigorenko is invloved in roughly 1/3 of the team's offense and no one else on his team is close to grigorenko in terms of points. If he was on a more competitive team his stats would be way better. That is a bit unsettling. Not a big surprize though if what he says is indeed true. Edited February 21, 2006 by Cruiser008

Well hell if he predicted both of zetterberg and datsyuk to be stars I hope he is a NHL scout by now, I dont but alot of stock in just some person that they dont name it just seems made up. norrisnick 1 Report post Posted February 26, 2006 When Russia had to dip into their taxi squad when Korolyuk went down it was a tossup between Igor and another forward to take that spot. The other guy was already in Switzerland practicing with his team for something so he got the call. Expect Grigorenko to be at the World Championships at Riga later in the spring. He may not reach the potential he had prior to his accident (which was huge by the way) but he still ought to be a quality second line scorer at the very least. peace
Mule39 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2006 I think he'll be fine. He may need a season in Grand Rapids but the Wings will have plenty of roster openings for next season.
Henkka 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2006 (edited) I think he'll be fine. He may need a season in Grand Rapids but the Wings will have plenty of roster openings for next season. I hope they will bring him straight on to play with Datsyuk. Russian league is a tough league and Grigs won't necessarily need any AHL-matches. But we'll see what he is capable at next training camp. I think he'll take the spot like Datsyuk straight on. Edited March 1, 2006 by Henkka

norrisnick 1 Report post Posted April 5, 2006 From Today's Freep. The highlight of the recent trips, Nill said, was seeing Grigorenko skating at almost 100%. Grigorenko nearly died in an automobile accident in 2003. "We were pleasantly surprised," Nill said of how well Grigorenko has recovered. "All scouts like good hockey players. It's rewarding to see good players and good games, because you see a lot of bad games and bad players." Pleasanly surprised is a good thing. peace
