Red Kingdom 4 Report post Posted January 19, 2006 Ken Daniels announced during the Wings game that the Lions had indeed Hired Rod Marinelli as their new head coach. Hope he's tougher than the last two.
Matt 1,048 Report post Posted January 19, 2006 http://www.mlive.com/weblogs/highlightreel/ A great resource for Lions news. After seeing he was a candidate last week I liked what I read and wasn't high on getting a re-tread like Haslett. As the blog says, Marinelli is a "screamer" and a "leader"... something this team definitely needs. There's a reason why the Bucs refused to let go of him. betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted January 19, 2006 meh....I'd never heard of him til a couple days ago. I mean, it's nice we don't have a "retread" but then, Mornhinweg wasn't a retread either. Hopefully he's all the taskmaster he's made out to be and then some. I just hope he wasn't hired only because Grimm (the apparent top choice) wasn't available. Then again....if that's the case, it might be best if Millen's top choice wasn't available. This is unfair to the new guy, but is it too soon to start the Fire Marinelli bandwagon, or do we have to wait til the Lions actually commence embarassing themselves on the field of play? I mean, just as a pre-emptive kind of thing so we don't have to remember later, y'know?
Red Kingdom 4 Report post Posted January 19, 2006 There's one thing I just don't understand. I've seen this on other message boards regarding the hire and I've heard it on 1270 from Mike Valenti over the last couple of weeks about hiring a coach period. Some people have this idea and Valenti is one of them, that a guy shouldn't even be considered for a head coach position unless he's been either an offensive or defensive coordinator. That a position coach, like what Marinelli has been with the Bucs, is not worthy of a head coach job. I'm wondering where this idea came from. It's like they have to ascend this type of ladder to get there and if they don't, they're doomed for failure or the hiring team doesn't know what they're doing and are asking for trouble. Now, in all the years I've followed the NFL, most coaches were hired out of the assistant ranks of other teams. It didn't matter if they were a OL coach, a LB coach, whatever. If they were highly regarded as an upcoming head coaching material, that's how they were hired. Now, everybody says, "nope, can't do that, he's not an OC or DC so, he's not head coaching material". I just don't get it. Already tonight, on other boards, folks are poopooing this hire because Marinelli isn't a coordinator.
Heroes of Hockeytown 694 Report post Posted January 19, 2006 There is an Italian resturaunt just down the street from here named Marinelli's... I think I'll spend my Sunday's down there from now on. I get a twofer on my curses and obscenitites.
RockyMountainWingGal 108 Report post Posted January 19, 2006 OK you people need to realize something. It doesn't matter who the new coach is - it could be Donald Duck. Millen su&&s and the owners aren't far behind. The only good football that is going to be coming to Detroit is in 2 1/2 weeks.

Valenti and Foster are dopes...Andy Reid was an Offensive Lineman coach for Green Bay before he was named as HC of Philly. That hasn't worked out too bad for them. Conversely, Morningweig (sp) was an OC for San Fran, and that didn't work out too well. It is a risk, but that's why I'm dying to see who he brings in as his assistants.
