Louisville 112 Report post Posted February 6, 2007 So this is probably a broken record, but I was reading Gino Reda's weekly post at TSN, and something just jumped at me. And a minus to hockey television ratings in the states, which hit a new all-time low. Madison Square Gardens Network had a 0.01 rating for Saturday's game between the Devils and Panthers. That means that of 7.4 million homes, only 736 were actually tuned into the game - less than 1,000 homes?! And to make matters worse, a National Lacrosse League game drew over 10,000 I know we are all aware of the horrible ratings in the states, but this really shocked me. 736 people? My jaw dropped when I saw this. Anybody else as worried as me?
datsyuk_13_fan 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2007 I saw that too and was pretty shocked but there are never articles on when cities are having good ratings, and there are places out there that have good ratings. Buffalo had a 7.1 rating on versus for the all star game and even higher if you include CBC which made it the most watched cable show that day. But yea seeing ratings decrease does hurt, I find hockey the best sport to watch.

You could also argue Buffalo's success, and the fact that Miller and Briere were on the team, contributed to those allstar ratings in Buffalo. But either way, it seems like there would be more hardcore fans watching the game.

Any chance that a good portion of the households that do get MSG were tuned into the Isles/Sabres game on FSN NY instead? Think about it. MSG is a regional network that serves the greater NYC area. This means you will probably get Rangers fans, Devils fans, Islanders fans, or Sabres fans. Rangers fans would be more likely to watch an Isles/Sabres game than a Devils/Panthers game. The only group likely to watch the Devils game is the Devils fans. While 736 seems like a small number, it's a much larger percentage of the viewing population as it is not a national broadcast. I would like to see the ratings for the Islanders game before passing judgement as 'the NHL is doomed because nobody tuned in to see two of the least popular NHL teams play when two other New York market teams were playing EACH OTHER. Guest Tunbo Batman Report post Posted February 6, 2007 well, the fact that people avoid devils/panthers matchups like the plague is a GOOD sign. who would want to watch that ******* crap when there are good games at the same time?

I guess that makes sense that two NY teams were playing that night and it contributed to the dip in ratings. I wasn't aware that the Isles/Sabres played and Gino just happened to leave that detail out. Although I don't think I agree in saying the Devils and Panthers are considering "two of the least popular teams" and for the record I wasn't stating that the NHL is doomed because of it, just simply that this trend worries me. On that note, if you haven't already check out Bucci's new column, I think his theory on hockey in America is dead on. Also, that number does still seem small when it's available in 7.4 million homes. Edited February 6, 2007 by Louisville

Yeah he's mentioned before that Detroit's annoucers are some of the best. Were lucky have Ken and Mick compared to most of the NHL annoucers.
raidedredwing2 0 Report post Posted February 6, 2007 Wow, im shocked.... i can only guess the nhls responce to this...."Lets make the game better" ..... Big change is noooooooo good... if they change the net types, it will hurt the sport.... PUT MORE TEAMS IN CANADA! PUT MORE FIGHTING IN THE GAME! AND FOR CRAP SAKES SHRINK THE PADS MORE..... THE GOALIES ARE STILL TOOOO BIG IN NET! NO ONE WANTS TO SEE A GOALIE VS GOALIE GAME... THATS BASEBALLS STYLE... THE NHL WILL RESPOND TO LOW RATINGS WITH DRASTIC CHANGE... I THINK IT WILL KILL THE SPORT, AS MUCH AS I HATE SAYING THAT BETTMAN HAS TO GO, AND SO DO MANY OTHERS
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted February 6, 2007 Somewhere along the line, there's got to be a typo. I refuse to believe that rating number. I think Reda got fed some bum info. Maybe a 1 rating, which represents 1 percent of homes, got turned into the decimal representation of 1 percent: .01. That would mean 74,000 instead of 740. Much more likely. Louisville 112 Report post Posted February 7, 2007 well, the fact that people avoid devils/panthers matchups like the plague is a GOOD sign. who would want to watch that ******* crap when there are good games at the same time? That's like saying, who would want to watch a Wings/Blues game when there are good games at the same time? Does a game like that even matter someone other than a hardcore fan or is what you call "******* crap"?

edicius 3,269 Report post Posted February 7, 2007 Bucci rocks, though. I also don't like goal judges because they look very sad. And that makes me sad. I think the women who shovel the on-ice snow during TV timeouts should also work as goal judges. They are always happy.
