As I've been saying for at least a month now.....it will soon be officially time to appoint the new Official LGW Objet de Drool. Doan's not leaving Phoenix. Nominations are now being taken.

Oh, I'm sure Ryan Smyth will be the next "realistically unattainable" asset.

No offense to Cory Cross, but we need to make a bigger move than that this year! If Holland pulls another move like that, I will be

In all fairness, Cory Cross was the emergency backup plan. From what I have heard, Holland had lined up Witt well enough that he traded Rivers to make room for him, but then was trumped by Nashville's RIDICULOUS offer.

Witt over Lebda wouldn't have changed our fortunes last year in the playoffs. Would you have rather coughed up a first, lost in the first round, and then lost Witt in the offseason? Cross was a good compromise when Witt's price increased dramatically beyond his value? Holland was able to pick up a physical depth defenseman to upgrade over Rivers without giving up anything of significant value.

BOOYAH!

Cory Cross was the opposite of a noteworthy trade - and I'll even admit not playing him against the team he had just come from was a bit odd - but last year's team won the President's Trophy and was one of the hottest team's in the second half of the season (ring any bells?).

Yes, I know, I know... the playoffs are a different game than the regular season and the President's Trophy means nothing if you can't muster up some wins against the 8th seeded Oilers... but you can't expect Ken Holland (or any other intelligent general manager) to fuss with team chemistry when the team is wins a hell of a lot more than it loses.

Would I like to see some changes on the roster? Sure. But acquiring better pieces doesn't always make the puzzle fit together better - you need the RIGHT pieces to swap in and swap out.

Far be it from me to know what the right pieces are, and I'm the first to admit that I'm no GM. Everyone who screams for "GRIT!" and "Shane Doan for a third rounder and Lilja!" needs to admit the same.

Good luck getting people to admit that.

Cross got a bad rap because he wasn't Brendan Witt or Bobby Orr. People who railed on him like he sucked never bothered to actually pay attention when he was in. I had done some digging way back when trying to defend Cross coming up to the playoffs that year and although I can't remember the exact numbers, the Wings record was something like 17-2 with Cross in the lineup and like 1-2-2 with him out of the lineup. I think he was also a + or E player in all but one of those games.

He was brought in as insurance in a 6-7 role. He had experience and size and he did what was expected of him. People could rag on Holland if they wanted because he didn't make a splashier move but ragging on Cross was a bit misplaced IMO because he performed admirably.

I don't know why he didn't play in Lilja's place.
