Majsheppard 203 Report post Posted February 24, 2007 I just wanted to know, what would possess the NHL to think that the trade deadline weekend should match up with the NFL scouting combine. Leave it to the NHL to figure out another way to take an exciting event and get it burried in the sports news in America. It is almost like they want no attention. I've heard of this NFL thing... it's like the CFL but with smaller balls, right? Seriously though- the NHL can't let their entire schedule be dictated by the need not to coincide with other sporting events/news.
Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted February 24, 2007 Only hockey fans care about the trade deadline. Its not like some person who barely watches hockey would care where Guerin is going anyway. You dont gain new fans with trade deadline talk on tv...so i really dont understand what your point is at all. Hockey fans will find out trade info on their own, dont need ESPN for that. Majsheppard 203 Report post Posted February 24, 2007 Hmmm, if you want to grow the brand you want people to pay attention. If you lived in the states, you would realize that Sportscenter is going to talk about the Combine, then Spring Training, then the NBA, then whatever other dumb stuff they got, then the NHL for a half a second. There is no good reason for moving up the deadline IMO, and this just seems to be them showing that they cannot learn a lession. OLN didn't work, and they are making the same mistake by standing in the shadow of others. You do have to adjust you schedule to insure you get press when your doing worse then cars driving in a circle. I thought they got that, I mean check the Wings schedule, no Sunday games until after the NFL season. That is smart marketing, which is what they need. Lou_Siffer 1 Report post Posted February 24, 2007 A person who isnt an avid fan already could give two flying s***s about the trade deadline. This is not like the all-star game debacle. That was a GAME, in which your best players are showcased. In that case, you want new viewers to flip it on and see what its all about. Thats why the scheduling of it was so piss poor and it got completely lost in the shuffle. But this is a friggin deadline we're talkin' about here! How does Barry Melrose and the gang being on ESPN talking about trades increase your fanship? Why would non NHL fans have any interest whatsoever in that? They'd turn the channel. Yeah you must be right, I mean it's not like Nashville is going crazy hyping the Forsberg trade or anything even though their attendence has been junk. Wake up sir, what makes news is stars and stories. This is a very imporant time to make those stories and get these teams deeper in the playoffs, which is what makes a team popular in their area. That is why teams like the Avalanche survived when the Rockies failed. If you never knew anything about Bourque being moved to Colorado, you prob wouldn't have made an effort to watch those games which means less viewership, less money, less success for the NHL. This laissez-faire approach to Hockey is why it is becoming less and less popular. You have to fight for attention, because we all can agree if you give the NHL a chance you will realize its the most entertaining sport there is. If you don't think it can make a differnce you prob don't remember that little trade that sent a certain player to LA....

If you don't think it can make a differnce you prob don't remember that little trade that sent a certain player to LA.... I'm sure if a player the caliber and stature of Wayne Gretzky is traded, it will be given a sufficient amount of broadcast time no matter what events are going on in other sports. The trade deadline is a competitive balance issue, not a showcase issue. The powers that be came up with a time frame for the deadline based on a lot of things, and changing it so as not to interfere with another league's events is asinine. National Signing Day for NCAA football is the first week in February. Spring training in MLB begins shortly thereafter. There's the NFL combine. The NBA just had it's All-Star Game, same day as the Daytona 500, last weekend. The Oscars are on, and so are the Grammys. Conference tournaments such as the ACC, Big Ten, and Big East are upcoming in NCAA basketball, and they're followed by March Madness. So when do you think the NHL should try and squeeze in the trade deadline to accommodate, hm?
Barrie 900 Report post Posted February 25, 2007 If American Sports fans aren't into the NHL yet, they never will. Hockey's a great game, but it's a regional sport and has a loyal fan base. The League should stick to making the loyal fans happy instead of STILL trying to gain new fans. With that said, I don't think putting the trade deadline on another weekend would make any difference. PRStoetzer 1 Report post Posted February 25, 2007 Really who cares about the NFL at this time of year? Combine? WTF is that? The NFL Combine is where most of the college seniors and juniors that have declared for the NFL draft all work out in various drills in front of team scouts. Basically a job interview.
