Post-GAME 4: Red Wings 3, Sharks 2 (OT)

This was far and away, IMO, the best game, not just of this series, but any series thus far in the playoffs.

I don't know if any of you noticed, but nhl.com had a poll on its front page yesterday asking fans how many games they thought our series would go. As I recall, less than 12% thought it would go 5 games. 51% thought it would go 6 - which it well could, and could mean victory for either team, and more than a third thought it would go the distance.

That was before tonight's game. So much for these teams not being well matched.

So I'm at work checking the computer whenever I get a chance. I'm mostly on the flightline or in the hangar so it's not that often. The last time I check it's 2-1 Sharks with a couple minutes left in the 3rd. I call my son Garett at home and he says; "Dad they're trying really hard but San Jose keeps clearing the puck. Wait! Hang on! SCORE! SCORE! SCORE!" So I was able to celebrate over the phone with my boy. It was so cool. The next time I checked the game was over. I called him again and he ran me through the play by play. Congrats to the Wings!!

well, i'm just going to assume that holmstrom's fine seeing as we haven't heard anything. i don't know guys, i think i feel a two game winning streak coming on. GO WINGS!!!!!!!

please SOMEONE give props to Filpulla for taking on two big Sharks, getitng the puck from them twice along the boards, grinding it out with guys bigger than him, skating close enough to almost be hit by a third as he crossed the blue line, and then making a beautiful little pass to Lang....51 was TRUE GRIT on that play, i rewound it like 30 times.....watch 51 just before lang gets it.

it was a great play and pass by filppula. but anytime lang scores, especially a clutch goal like that, it's going to be more talked about than the play that set it up. we're just not used to lang scoring this year. it always catches us by surprise.

hey i think lang has had some great shifts over the last couple games, maybe inconsistent, but showing alot of promise, when hes on his game as of late, hes starting to turn on the burners, faster on the puck, keeping it in the zone and setting people up for chances.... i see him on a streak now.....

GO LANG GO!

im really hoping anaheim wins, so we can do a complete payback year this year, calgary, sj, anaheim, i guess in the cup that would be NJ, but i want a 7 gamer against my 2nd fav Rangers with shanny and avery!

 Agreed. Val made that play happen! The kid is pure talent.

yes he did, i love that guy!

Closing thoughts before bedtime:

That puck over the glass penalty is still dumb as hell. We caught the good bounce this time (and I guess you could say San Jose had their chance, if you want), but you just never know. I'll be glad to see it gone.

Finally, I like these quotes from Babcock. This:

"They're a real good team, we're a real good team, and that's why it's so hard in the games to control the game. Both teams are used to controlling the tempo of the game, that's what happens to you all year long, and that's why you don't think you played that good."

I mentioned this earlier, that it's not just Team A miraculously playing poorly mid game and Team B benefiting from the other's "lack of heart." These are two top-notch squads in a power struggle, each exerting their will on the other and making that other look bad at different points in each game.

And this:

"That's Dom; he shuts the door," Babcock said.

Dominik Hasek is the man, and the Paralyzed Snow Angel of Defeat rules. He's been everything that was advertised: dominant goaltending, wild flops and dives, clutch saves, terrible puck-handling. Bellissimo.

What a thing of beauty... The Wings have proved me wrong again. Every time they're down 2-0 I hope they will score but my heart is literally pounding with fear and I think they'll lose. They are so incredible, I will wear their jersey with so much pride tomorrow! Home ice advantage for us now!

after watching that on my dvr again, i noticed lang actually went offside as the puck got knocked back to filpula, and he quickly did a circle and timed it perfectly to get back in ONSIDE...

WAY TO GO LANG! WICKED PLAY AND HEADS UP TO NOT GET THE OFFSIDE!

LETS GO RED WINGS CLAP CLAP CLAP-CLAP CLAP

God... do you guys realize how close they were to losing this game? That empty net and that blocked shot, there's just one point in the season, one play, that turns everything on its ear, that gives the Wings life and the ability to win this series.

I'm in awe of it, really. What a game.

that is why hockey is the most exciting sport in the world - not too good for my ticker though :P

I'm going to have to admit this and take my hits.

I went to bed after they were down 2-0 last night. I figured, well, I had to get up at 5am, and there is no way in hell SJ is going to blow another 2-0 lead, especially in their own building, and well, why bother staying up late and being dead tired the next morning?

So, i shut it off and went to bed. My sister was on her way home last night and called me just after the 2nd period ended. She goes "hey i was listening to the wings on the radio and they just scored". I said "uh huh". She said, "aren't you watching?" I said "no, there's no way they're going to win this game and I'm tired". So i went to bed, then woke up at 5am for work today and she was still up lol. She goes "Dave, they won last night!" I said "huh?" She goes "yeah they won in OT". I started jumping up and down like a little kid.

So, ill take my beatings. I lost faith.

All I can say is, it'll be so much easier to deal with these days until Saturday being at 2-2 instead of down 3-1. Whew!

I taped the game also so this morning i rewinded it to see the goals. So cool, both late goals to tie it up and then the OT. AWESOME!

So now I think the wings are going to win this series. I think they should come home and hopefully light up Nabokov in game 5.

I was reading how Ron Wilson called out his team. Do you guys think that was the right way to go about it? I think that could either motivate, or destroy chemistry in the locker room. Personally I hope for the latter, but you never know.
