Hank 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2007 No excuses for the loss tonight... We were never in command of this one. We needed our #1 pp unit to be functional but really I think Giguere swiped this one. What a lost opportunity... Now this is gonna be a dogfight right to the end--guess we knew it would be... I have to respectfully disagree. I thought Giggy didn't play all that well and you could make a case that if it were a really good goalie in net we don't score those 3 goals. He routinely looks like a fish out of water when a shot gets deflected or comes flying off the boards. His whole game is sqauring up to the shooter so when the puck doesn't take a logical line he's way out and has no skill to recover. His defense deserves 100% of any credit that goes his way. In the end, I thought we were very much in command in this game. We didn't play well at all on special teams and that hurt us. But we carried the play for most of the night and we had a lot of chances. The puck bounces 1/8th of an inch different and Filpulla's breakaway goal is in the net. That's the breaks. In the end, I'm confident after how Detroit played the last 2 games. They know they played well and they'll carry that into game 5. Mark my words, Pronger will be a major reason why the Ducks lose the next game. He can be very suspect in his own zone and he takes bad penalties.
Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted May 18, 2007 Gah, I can't believe we have to wait until Sunday to see how this all sorts out.
Packer487 3 Report post Posted May 18, 2007 I understand that rationale, but I don't agree with it. Penalties are not supposed to be even in a game, the team who commits more infractions is supposed to get more. I do totally agree with you about us being the better team, it would just be nice if the rules were the same for both teams. It's just so frustrating that we should be up 3-1 at the very least. I'm very very optomistic about us winning this series in 6 games. That's the way it should be, but in reality, you knew that we weren't getting another PP after that long 5 on 3 to start the third, and you knew they were getting the next call (or calls, if there was more than one). At least that call on Cleary was legit. They aren't going to gift you that many chances, especially on the road. Gotta take advantage when you have the opportunity. We didn't tonight, and it cost us the game. If we make it 4-3, the game is over. The crowd would've been out of it, the Ducks would've been down after giving up 3 straight goals. We let them off the hook in this game, make no mistake about it. And as I said earlier, if we lose this series, point to tonight as the reason why. Because this was the chance to step on their throat and we didn't take it. But I still really like us in a best of 3 series against Anaheim at this point, especially with two at the Joe and a goalie who has the tendancy to come up huge after a bad game (and a tendancy to come up huge in elimination games). It's going to be tough, but after Game 2, I would've been thrilled with a split in Anaheim. Now I'm pissed that's all we've got. That change in attitude is a good thing, however, because it means that we REALLY swung the play in our favor. This team can't beat us if Hasek is on his game. And we have every reason to believe that he will be in the games coming up. -Tim
USAFWingedWheel 4 Report post Posted May 18, 2007 the ducks were so badly penalized that we should've had this game...they are just an aweful team...i've never seen this many penalties since after the lock-out...
Hank 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2007 CBC's talking about how now that Perry and Selanne scored they'll have renewed life and will be much better as we go along. I have to disagree with this. Both players scored goals in the first and were basically invisible the rest of the way. If those goals were to give them a boost we would have seen them more the rest of the game. Selanne showed more jump than usual in the last half of the game but at the same time I am never worried when he grabs the puck. The only forward that worries me in the offensive zone is Getzlaf. Meanwhile, Wings like Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Filpulla and even our grind line seem to be giving the Ducks fits.

corvette80 1 Report post Posted May 18, 2007 Detroit didn't win for many reasons 1. Only effort from one maybe two lines 2. Horrible power play, HORRIBLE 3. Dow wasn't himself 4. We didn't start like we did game 3 They knew they were gonna come out crashing the net because they are down 2-1 in the series and they didn't have pronger, but still we find a way to think this game was going to be given to us like game 3. Must win in detroit to have any hope.
adtthosa 5 Report post Posted May 18, 2007 This is our first loss of the playoffs where I can say that I'm not really mad about it. We absolutely deserved to win this game and with a bit more luck we would have. I could tell right from the Star Spangled Banner that Cleary was going to have a great game. They had the cameraman walking by the bench and the look in Cleary's eyes was awesome, you could tell he was ready to play. He was definately the best player out there for us tonight. Bertuzzi, Filppula and Markov I thought were all really good as well. If we didn't have those 5-on-3's, I honestly would not know what to blame this loss on because we outplayed them in just about every area. Too bad we couldn't finish our chances at the start of the 3rd, because the refs just about handed it to us. That cross check call was horrible. Kind of sucks that they got their PP working tonight, hopefully not for long. It would be easy to blame this game on Hasek, and I know it wasn't his best game of the playoffs at all, but I don't think any of the goals were his fault. It was either a point blank shot, he was being screened or it deflected off someone. I will say though that for the first time in the series, Jiggy won the goaltending battle tonight. I refuse to badmouth Dom though knowing that if he lets in 4 goals one game, he's not giving up 4 in the next. All in all, I'm disappointed at the loss but thrilled at the way we played. If we play like we did tonight for the rest of this series, we will win. Game 5 will be huge.
YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted May 18, 2007 I cant believe people are actually saying Detroit played poorly. Was anybody else watching what the black shirts were doing out there?? They gave up plenty of pucks, took tons of stupid penalties, stood around while Detroit was cycling the puck. As for the bitching about the 5 on 3s, they had lieke 5 shots on their first one and who was there? Giguere. Give the man some credit. He was about the ONLY player on the ice tonight that played the entire 60 minutes, outside of MAYBE Filppula and Getzlaf.
HockeyCrazy3033 168 Report post Posted May 18, 2007 Some of you guys drive me crazy. I mean seriously..get a grip. Imagine we lost game 3, and won tonight. You all would be jumping for joy. We ASKED for split and we got it. I understand that we could of won tonight, but let's give our guys some credit for even coming back in this game. They never give up and they should be applauded for that. Dom is going to be a wall on Sunday. The series is tied. Game 5 is ours. Everybody calm the hell down. Guest jaytan Report post Posted May 18, 2007 Can I just say, all the momentum talk is silly. Case in point: this game. You'd think a 5-0 blowout would give you all the "momentum" you need to put the series away, but alas. On the contrary, we beat them too badly. That 5-0 game woke them up. Offsides 21 Report post Posted May 18, 2007 Thoughts on the game 1) people are all whine whine that we blew an opportunity BUT...we coulda just been out at 3-1...but we battled back...that DOES count for something. It means we can't be counted out. 2) Hasek was not that good and it hurt us....I'm not going off my handle about it because most likely he will bounce back and do well...but I will call it for what it was...and it was NOT GOOD. On the flip side, he did make some decent saves near the end when we were tied...it was just unfortunate that eventually 1 went in. 3) This was a GOOD GAME...it was fun to watch. I really, really enjoyed watching us come back and really make an effort. 4) Zetterberg was like a demon on crack out there 5) Clangtuzzi...nuff said. 6) OMG...WTF...Flip was robbed... e_mcgrath88 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2007 Reply from last thread: When you've got 2 long 5 on 3s, you can't complain about the refs too much. They interfere a lot. I thought they were supposed to get that out of the game, but I guess not. Fight through it. We're still getting more chances, our goalie is still better, we've got a better offense, and we've swung the tide 5 on 5. Plus Babcock can get the matchups he wants now for 2 of the next 3 (if we need it). And Dom is money when it counts. Oh, and I don't think there's too much momentum carrying over. Especially after a 2 day break. Now the major question is this: I typically wear my Holmstrom jersey for home games, the Doug Brown jersey for road games, and the Lidstrom Sweden jersey for "must-wins" or when we need a little more luck. I wore it for games 4, 5, 6 against SJ (mainly because I was afraid of them and I wanted that series closed out as quick as possible). Does game 5 qualify as a "must win" or a "need some extra luck" game, or should I just stick with the Homer jersey (which has also been VERY solid in the playoffs). -Tim I will complain about the reffs.. they were terrible both ways... get some consistance.. the wings should have had 3 power plays in the last 10 minutes of the game, but of couse since you gave the wings a 5 on 3 at the beginning of the period, you know they're not calling another thing.. ..and the call on Rob Niedermeyer for the 3rd goal was terrible, so what do they do, give them a make up call 30 seconds later... The only time Perry got noticed after his goal was for his moronic crosscheck on Zetterberg. As for Selanne, does he even play more than 1 period a game anymore? Yzermaniac192005 0 Report post Posted May 18, 2007 Okay, I wish I could put and end to all the complaining and whining thats going on here but obviously I have no such power.. Lets just take the positives from this game and realize how well the Wings played. And like I said before, Dom will be Dom again next game, he just had some rough bounces. Face the facts people, without Dom we don't get this far anyways. Next game should be a great one. I'm really really looking forward to it!
Packer487 3 Report post Posted May 18, 2007 Oh, one thing that we need to get fixed: Stop taking too many men on the ice penalties. That HAS to be like 6 in the playoffs. There's no reason for it. You're a pro team. Get your line changes straight. These games are too big to have bench minors every other game. -Tim

Holding it in causes murders. Yeah and discussing a loss is fine. Saying the Wings played poorly and deserved to lose *like some are saying* is crap. We lost because Giguere was really good, Hasek was not, and the 5 on 3's. That sums it up. Let's move on to Game #5.
