Bye Bye Lang, Bertuzzi,

Option to leave taken by Schneider :( Fedorov begs to come back to play defence.

Hasek stays for pennies with a contract that pays the organization 1000 bucks everytime someone scores on him when he is floppin on his back.

Hello Ryan Smyth!!

Our powerplay is finally clicking in 07-08. (OMG it's been 10 years since the magically 97-98 cup. Wow, I'm gettin old!)

looks like you made a couple of these threads, so ill post here too

no thank you on bertuzzi, i dont think i can handle him for an entire year if he is going to play like he did in the playoffs, which was a lot of gliding and not much else. even if he was hurt, he showed no heart whatsoever, we can spend that money on someone else.

also, cheli and lidstrom have at least 2 more years in them. lidstrom maybe another 5. unless cheli's play really starts going downhill, he will be around.

I just don't see the Wings going after Drury. I think Gomez is a better possibility. With a big turnover in players after next season probably, the Wings need to focus on some younger legs.

You really think Hasek will be back?

I'm pretty sure will see Bert in a Winged Wheel next season. Give him a whole season of play......he'll be a dangerous presence in the 2008 playoffs.

I also keep thinking Michael Ryder would do well in a Wings Jersey.................. Am I the only one?

Bertuzzi was battling a back injury and the rust of not playing in the majority of the regular season.... He showed flashes of brilliance in the playoffs and it would be a shame to let him walk when we could probably get him back for a decent price. Bertuzzi will be able to become near the player he once was if he puts his mind and body to it, and along with the right coaching he can become a major force on our team..... I think he likes it here, and I think he will be re-signed....

Lang will not be back.

I think Schneider may retire, if he comes back as a Wing, expect a 1 year deal like what Chelios has.

Chelios will be back.

Bert will be signed to a 2 year deal with a club option on a third.

I have a feeling that Hudler will be resigned, only to be traded.

Calder will most likely be allowed to test the FA waters.

I don't see Smyth as a Wing, though I have been wrong before.

Lidstrom has 2 years in him, at which time he will probably step aside to free up the money that needs to go to Zetts- and the captaincy.

I doubt that we will be adding any big name FA's this year.

Hasek probably one more year.

The rest is up in the air imho.

Hasn't Schneider mentioned that he wants to try and go as long as Chris Chelios? I don't think he is toying with thoughts of retirement.....

My thoughts were about his wrist. It requires surgery, doesn't it? Who knows how his shot will be when he gets done with that?

Good/interesting point..... In any event, I believe he will at least try to come back and maybe pull a mid-season Brett Hull retirement if he feels he can no longer compete at the level he wants to.....

I want someone mean. Really, really mean. Mean like Mac, Shanny and Marty used to be in the playoffs. Mean like the Stevie Y stare of death, but with about 235lbs of angry knuckle-dragging flesh behind the stare. I want someone who when they hear a puke like Perry say someone's gonna "get it", they skate over and shove their glove down his throat and ask if he wants more of "it". I DON'T think our team hits enough, nor are we mean enough. Yes, I'm angry we lost but I want to be talented AND scare the other team a little bit next year. Who's out there? Ah, i wish i knew the answer to that.. but Andy Sutton is a UFA, he's big and mean. I'd like Bertuzzi if he would play like the old "pre-Moore" Bert, but I think that ship has sailed. Can we clone him and accelerate his aging then have him raised by wolves? Wolves that also run a hockey school? lol But, i digress...

Goodbye to: Lang and Calder.

Hello to: Sutton and something big and nasty with good hands.

Hats off to: Cleary, Dats, Franzen, Lidstrom, Hasek and Z, they played great.

The jeopardy question to Holland; why did you resign Maltby when it's obvious the guy hardly plays now... let alone three years from now. Like duh.

A big thanx for nothin to: Schneider and Kronwall, if they hadn't went out and gotten injured we would be in the cup final. Just kiddin boys, get well and come back strong next year, we missed ya.

And thanx to all the posters, moderators, administrators and other elves or dwarves who operate this site. See ya in September.

This offseason might be an ugly one for us.

As it is, the Wings have about $12 million in cap room with Hasek, Chelios, Markov, Schneider, Hudler, Calder, Lang, and Bertuzzi unaccounted for. The cap may go up, but I think we also owe Hasek a million dollar bonus, so I'm going to call that a wash for now, and if we end up with extra money, good.

If we want to win next year, we better pray Hasek comes back. Even though he could command a nice raise, I'll give him the same kind of contract. Say $1 million.

3 defensemen to account for: Chelios signs for a million. That leaves $10 million for 2 defensemen and 4 forwards. Quincey comes up full-time, we let Markov go. That's $500,000. We'll deal with Schneider in a minute.

Hudler is an RFA. If Kronwall can finagle himself a $3,000,000 per deal, Hudler should at least be able to get $1.5 million. That leaves $8 million for 1 defenseman and 3 forwards.

Bertuzzi shouldn't be re-signed. It's nice to think about what he could be if he's healthy, but we have to give up another second rounder if we sign him, and that's enough for me to pass, even if he'd come at a big discount. Lang's obviously gone.

Say McGrath and Kindl both come up. Now you've got $7 millionish for 2 forwards. Grigorenko comes up for roughly a million. $6 million for 1 forward. But you also have to keep in mind that in this scenario our defense corps is:

Lidstrom, Kronwall, Chelios, Quincey, Lebda, Lilja, Kindl. That's not exactly an improvement. If we let Schneider go, we better be convinced that Kronwall is going to be better than he was this season, because he was pretty awful for wide portions.

We've got room for one major acquisition. But that means we let Bertuzzi, Lang, Calder, Schneider, Markov all go. I gotta believe Schneider is still making at least $3 million if he comes back. He put up 52 points this year. I have a real hard time believing we could get him for a Chelios-like discount. So if you want him back instead of Kindl, you've got $4 million for a forward. And we still haven't improved the team. And I feel that some of these estimates might be low for salary.

Hard to see how next year's team is going to be any better than this years. I'm really depressed tonight now that I've seen the numbers....and that assume Hasek comes back. If he doesn't, we're better off by maybe $300,000 except we don't have an elite goalie anymore.

Someone cheer me up please.

im sorry but i dont see how next years team needs to be a whole lot better than this years team................i mean this team certainly had a good shot at winning the cup. our failure this year was not due to lack of ability

Chelios for 1 mil?!? Hudler for 1.5??!? you're on crack. Chelios will re-sign for 500,000 - 600,000 and Hudler 1 mil TOPS. If we can get Hasek back and sign Bert for a good deal, we'll still have rougly 5-6 mil for a good forward. I think we'll be in a really good position next year and see some welcomed new faces.

Don't be worried so much, guys. I too look at the salaries, the contracts and our free agents and get scared, but so was I before previous two seasons.. Holland knows how to get some good deals done and - if need to be - find players like Samuelsson and Cleary - coming in cheap and finding their place in Red Wings jersey ;)

Have some faith in Holland ;)

Chelios made $850,000 last year. I assume his contract would be similar next year. He's already taking a huge paycut (he's making less than Lilja for Crissakes). I rounded it up to a million because I didn't feel like doing that much math.

Kronwall had done less than Hudler in his career and somehow managed to land a 5 year/$15 million extension heading into HIS restricted free agency. Doesn't mean I'd want to pay him that much...I was trying to be realistic, and after seeing what Kronwall got, Hudler might get more than you'd think. Either way, you're telling me I'm "on crack" because of less than a million dollars.

We've got room for one big signing--but we'll have to depend on a lot of kids to make that signing. And if Hasek retires, we've still only got room for one big signing, but we don't have a goalie.
