Scott Niedermayer Considering Retirement

This has been rumored for weeks now. Something tells me that, with the magnitude of these rumors, it might just happen. It also helps they aren't "Eklund based". :P

I almost think he has a nagging injury of some kind. I mean, sure, he's won everything, but if he likes playing the sport, then why not play it for as long as you can?

I could see getting tired of the travel. Tired of being away from family. Tired of having the crap beat out of you from October to May.

Some guys just don't have the hunger to play for as long as their bodies hold up, like Stevie and Cheli.

What a *****.

He must not like hockey all that much....I dont care what you've won, if you love the game you will play till your 40. Heck, he's getting millions to do it, and he makes it look easy to boot.

Yeah, thinking there's other things in his life greater than hockey definitely makes him a *****.

He's been playing probably since he could walk. you don't think he likes the game that much?

I saw an interview with Rob Niedermayer where he talked about how he and Scott didn't really know each other. They didn't really grow up together because they were always various places playing hockey. So it was nice for them to be on the same team to get to know each other.

How f*cked up is that, that two brothers less than a year apart in age don't even really know each other as well as they've known some of their teammates?

A life in elite hockey takes it's toll. If he hangs 'em up, he's going out on top.

I've been hearing strong rumours about this too. LA desperately wants to make the playoffs and they have a lot of room under the cap. Add in the fact that Giggy's pads will want at least $6M while Anaheim has a very cheap, capable backup in Ilya Bryzgalov (who led them to the conference finals in 06).

I just don't see Burke commiting $6-7M to Giggy's pads, along with the huge salaries of Neidermayer and Pronger. Especially when you think about the upcoming contracts needed to keep Getzlaf and the rest.

They could probably do it, but things will be tight.

If Niedermayer retires, his salary doesn't hit the cap because of his age IIRC. So we'd likely see the Ducks go after a similar type of guy like Rafalski, who could probably be had for 4.5 or so, as well as resigning Giguere.

All i know is that if we lose Selanne, Giggy, and Niedermayer its gonna be a big blow to the ducks...scotty is the glue to the team, it would be tough but i trust burke and his decisions...

my predictions...

Selanne Retires

Giguere Resigns for long term contract

Scotty finishes out his contract then retires

Reason he would retire.... I suspect that playing for Burke, and with Pronger, makes a class act like him uncomfortable.... reference his comment to the media on what it was like to play with Pronger...... "I don't really have a choice" He, and Selanne, are just way too classy for some of those goofs.

That's a funny quote. Can you link me to the article you read that in?

Wow....Did he really say that? I guess that he is really uncomfortable playing with Pronger if he did.

Do you think there Is there any chance that the Ducks will trade him?......and I don't mean to the Wings , just to any team.

According to a few New Jersey fans, Niedermayer was quoted as saying he wouldnt be playing into his late thirties like some of the guys do nowadays. And hes also apparently a family man.

This wouldnt shock me at all. And I dont see why people have to call him a ***** because of it. Theres no shame in loving your family more than a sport which youve already dominated for a decade.
