Adams for Vrbata

So, what you're really trying to tell me is that the Blackhawks got a journeyman with 12 points last season.... for a player with 41 (remarkable) points on a bottom feeding Chicago team?

How does that make sense?

I guess my hopes for Chicago to return to its Original Six heritage must wait yet another agonizing season. J-Willy and Lang have been sent to Hockey Purgatory. Have a few on the house with the Bulin Wall... its going to be a long one, Hawks.

I'm astounded by the strange sequence of horrible management moves that team makes.

First, they aquire the biggest underachiever in hockey with Sergei Samsonov. His near 3 million salary really screws them of making any decent roster moves, barring they are actually in the playoff hunt come trade deadline time (they most likely won't though).

Then, they sign Lang to a 4 million a year contract. Robert Lang of all people! The same Robert Lang that was constantly criticized here for his laziness and underachieving. The same Robert Lang that was being benched in the playoffs. They actually signed him for more money then he made here. That's absolutely ridiculous.

Now, they trade away their 2nd leading scorer, Radim Vrbata, for Kevyn Adams, who only had 12 points last year. They trade a 41 point player for a 12 point player. Now, nothing against Adams because he's actually a very good defensive forward, but it's ridiculous to see them trade away one of their top offensive player for just that. They could have gotten something else in return, if they were smart (which I guess would be asking too much, since the biggest idiot and cheapskate the world has ever seen is the owner).

Sigh... I really wish the 'Hawks would turn it around, so we'd have an actual Original 6 rival again, and a decent one in the division. And no, I don't consider Nashville a decent rivalry either.

You have to look at it from more than just a points perspective.

First, Vrbata is a winger who while he can put up some points, doesn't do much else. He isn't physical, doesn't kill penalties, can't win faceoffs, etc... On the contrary, Adams is an extremely hard-working player who excels at killing penalties and winning face offs. So they're changing out a defensively weak player and some offense for no offense

but a really good team guy, who works his tail off and finishes checks, etc...

The move makes more sense if you look at their entire roster.

With Vrbata gone they currently have 3 NHL quality Right Wings + they're likely going to give Skille a chance to make the team. Doubtful that Kane would play this year but those 2 kids are their future up front with guys like Jonathan Toews, who also might make the team. Add in Samsonov, Lang, J.Will, Ruutu, Perrault they have quite a few centerman who'll have to play wing and most of those guys are offense-oriented. IMO, the Hawks need a few more guys like Adams if they want to do anything. They need guys that are responsible, defensive leaders that win battles and not just try to score and be completely one-dimensional offensive guys.

Martin Havlat

Patrick Sharp

Martin Lapointe

Jack Skille #7 pick

Patrick Kane #1 pick

I don't know their salaries but if Adams makes less than Vrbata the move makes even more sense.

great post. for anyone who is wondering why blackhawks did this, take a look.

the main point is that the blackhawks have brought in a lot of offensive players during the offseason who will (they are hoping) put up more points than vrbata. since they think vrbata won't have as big of an offensive role this year, they needed to get rid of him. they brought in kevyn adams who is a real character player. brings energy and plays a great defensive forward role. He will fit better on the 3rd line that Vrbata would have for sure.

point is in most people's mind (and i'm not GM) given vrbata's career year last season they could have gotten a better player. Adams had great linemates in carolina when he really established himself as a great roleplayer, But he had a terrible season playing on the Canes third line and didn't do much better on one of the worst teams in the league in PHX.
