Sopel signs with Chicago

Boy, those 'Hawks are becoming quite the big spenders this offseason. :P

Until I see an official link, I'll believe nothing. This is the Toronto media we're talking about. Tomorrow they'll probably have Raycroft going to L.A. for Kopitar.

Meh. If it's true we lose the chance to have a mediocre old d-man on our blueline eating up mins that should be going to prospects.

QFT

Although I'm disappointed that Quincy broke his hand. Personally I think he's better than Meech. Hopefully his hand will heal up by the time we need him.

...all I can say is he sure has his priorities in order. He chooses money over the chance to hoist a Cup. Oh well, we don't want money hungry fools on this team, we want Cup hungry fools!

When you have to go to training camp without a contract and you have to fight to earn another NHL paycheque, it probably dawns on a player that maybe this is his last chance to play in the NHL. I'd take the most amount of money I could get for my family's sake.

Good luck missing the playoffs you idiot. You signed with Chicago? Well, those guys love there Red Wings dont they. Sopel, Lang, Williams, Lapointe. Other then Lapointe who isnt as good as he used to be anyways, they all suck.

At least this means Downey has a better shot now!

very good point, which is something many fans on here tend to miss the point on. This is a player's livelihood and likely only source of income.

Damn. That's too bad. I think he would have been a good addition to our defensive core. Especially now with Quincey being hurt....

Why? Because you recognize his name?

He was exceedingly mediocre in his time here.

Eh I am pretty sure that I don't care about this one. If Sopel had taken the offer to be a Wing it would have meant good bye to my boy Meech and Lilly "Pain Train" Pads would have been kicked back to 7th d-man...instead lilly played 31 minutes tonight and sopel gets to play for chicago...I am happier without him. He is a poor and by poor I mean like hobos squeegeeing your car in toronto poor, mans Schneider in that he has a good shot from the point and can score but has no Defensive sense...

Bye bye Sopy...

And to those criticizing his desire for more money, I agree with the ones who say you take the larger contract to support your family, especially in a 32 year old probably skill-less man who is a free agent try out and needs to keep going sense.

It can all end at the snap of a finger (or in this case, bone or ligament).....Most NHL players have zero education and not that many of them can get full-time jobs involved in hockey.

When you start to realize that your career could end soon, you take the most amount of cash that you can get so that your family can live a better life when there are no NHL teams paying you anymore.

Family comes first.

Many young hockey players spend recklessly when they first come into the league because they think they have 15 years of earning millions ahead of them. When they get a little older and wiser, they start to realize that it's important to take care of your finances because it's not always going to be there for you.

A guy like Sopel might get offered a couple extra hundred thousand to play for Chicago. It might not seem like much in the grand scheme of things compared to what other players are making, but when this might be his last shot in the NHL, that extra $200,000 or whatever sure can go a long way in a education fund or inheretence fund for his kids.

first Lang, now Sopel.

is chicago poaching our talent pool or what!?

Wading pool, maybe.

Did we really need Sopel? Now we get to watch Meech get his shot, and if he doesn't cut it, there's still plenty of homegrown talent left. This is probably for the best for all parties. The only disappointment with how this defenseman battle shook out is that Quincey is robbed of badly needed ice time.

...I am sure that it was far less than what Chicago was offering, but greed took over. Chicago has been and always will be the bottom feeders of the NHL...

Greed took over? So if you were in his situation with no previous connection to the Wings at all, you'd automatically choose the Wings for less cash? That makes no sense. While I'd definitely say that the Wings are in better shape to have a prolonged run for the Cup, there are no guarantees that way. Going to Chicago he gets more money and, the way Chicago's defensive corps is, he'll get more playing time. I fail to see how greed even enters into it.
