toby91_ca 620 Report post Posted October 2, 2007 Im not necassarily saying that Datsyuk would be the better leader. Then why all the comparison between the two which seems to be painting a picture as to why you think Datsyuk would make a better leader? Also, what about this comment from you: Draper is the man. But Datsyuk should get the "A" over Drapes. And when asked if Dats is more deserving than Z or Drapes, you responded: Hank, no. Drapes, yes. Sorry for the confusion, but comments like that made be believe that you thought Dats was the better leader.

I just think Datsyuk deserves the "A" more. But I definitely dont think he's a better leader than Drapes yet. He will one day. But he's not yet. So even though IMO Draper right now is the better leader, I also think that what Datsyuk brings to the table, should earn him that "A" over Draper. IMO the sooner Datsyuk gets the "A", the better for Pavel. IMO Draper will be uneffected by not being an alternate.

Guest jaytan Report post Posted October 2, 2007 Maybe they're trying to give Datsyuk more responsibility in order to turn him into a leader and a clutch player. That's all I can figure here.

To be honest though, if the Wings are going to rotate the "A", I can't imagine they wouldn't do it amongst all three players. I don't think the Wings organization would put Z on a pedestal over Draper at this point (even though we've all heard that Z is being groomed to take over the Captaincy). If I had to bet, all three will rotate it equally.
Guest Yzer19 Report post Posted October 2, 2007 I swear i think you have some of the best weed in the world. You are all over the place. What you just said makes me wonder how old you are? I'm old enough to remember what a great leader Chelios was when he was with Blackhawks. He was considered one of the best captains in the leagues, right up there with Messier. Yes, Chelios was a dirty, classless player, but he was still a great leader. You don't need to be a classy player to be a great leader. I do think he should've been give the C when he first came. I don't think he should've been given the C last year because he's won't be playing for much longer. At this point, Lidstrom was the perfect choice to be The Captain. Guest jaytan Report post Posted October 2, 2007 You do realize, Yzer19, that we already had a relatively well-established captain on the team when Cheli came aboard, right? I mean, it's not like the guy was the best captain we ever had or even one of the best captains in the league at the time, but I don't think he was that terrible. Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted October 2, 2007 Datsyuk gets 'A' Pavel Datsyuk will be an alternate captain, along with Chris Chelios and Kris Draper . The three will rotate during the season, as only two can wear the "A" during games. Nicklas Lidstrom is the captain. Babcock floated the idea of giving Datsyuk the role after Steve Yzerman retired, but Datsyuk said he didn't know enough English. "His (Datsyuk) English is plenty good enough now," Babcock said. "We want everybody to know he's an important part of our leadership group and letting him know that, too." I guess Zetterberg isnt getting an "A" this year? I'm old enough to remember what a great leader Chelios was when he was with Blackhawks. He was considered one of the best captains in the leagues, right up there with Messier. There's this guy named Steve Yzerman, who was 10 times the captain Chelios was when he came here. I think Cheli shouldve gotten an "A" back in the day. But captain over Yzerman? Come on now. Guest Yzer19 Report post Posted October 2, 2007 I guess Zetterberg isnt getting an "A" this year? The article on the official Red Wings website said the trio is Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Draper. I'm guessing the Detroit News made a mistake. It doesn't make sense to take it away from Zetterberg and give it to Chelios. Datsyuk
SouthernWingsFan 854 Report post Posted October 2, 2007 Chelios should've been given the C right after the Wings traded for him. They should've immediately gave him the C. He's a Messier type leader. He's vocal, intimidating, a great player, HOFer, etc. However, at this point it's too late to give him the C now because his playing days are almost over. The Captain was the right choice for the captaincy. He had to wait 16 years for his captaincy so he earned it. It also helps that The Captain has already won 3 cups with the team, so he won't be criticized like a young player that never won it would be. Been sniffing glue today? You do realize Yzerman was still the captain of the Red Wings when they traded for Chelios and was never going to be anything different?
dicksmack 33 Report post Posted October 3, 2007 Because guys like this have so much talent, the spotlight is always on them and they are looked upon by their team, the league, etc. to lead...they are pretty much forced to be leaders and naturally develop those traits. Thus the A for Pavel.

Son of a Wing 1,644 Report post Posted October 3, 2007 Just ignore Yzer19. He's always been a troll on these boards. When Yzerman retired he claimed everyone on here and in the media was bashing and disrepecting Yzerman because we were looking forward to the new age Red Wings and how they would do without Yzerman and Shanny. ***** ***** ***** is all he did so now for some reason he's done a complete 360 and just puts down Yzerman every chance he can just for a reaction from people. Don't give him the satisfaction of getting upset. Just ignore him.

Definitely. Datsyuk and Zetterberg are the future of this team and they will eventually be the leaders. Draper isn't going to be around forever, so the Wings want Datsyuk involved with the leadership of the team. It makes sense. I'm not sure why they didn't start the rotating last year. Maybe they just weren't sure if Datsyuk was going to stay with the team.

NeverForgetMac25 483 Report post Posted October 3, 2007 That is funny. What's weird is they forgot the (") at the end of the sentance on each one. Babcock must be a stickler about some tape jobs. Or one of these articles did a little "copy" and "paste" action, and took Babs' quote out of context for another player. I would think thats the case seeing as that both articles just so happened to forget the (") at the end Babs' statement. Either that, or Babs really does zero-in on tape jobs.
