RedWingsFanatic 4 Report post Posted October 31, 2007 Dare I say this season might be a little more special than most? This game....let me count the reasons the Wings usually lose. Bad passing. Puck possession game not working. Not particularly gritty. And of course, it's the middle of the dreaded Western Canada swing, which always, always brings with it a losing streak. Ugly game all around.....and yet, they won. Not a game they usually find a way to win, but they did. Yes, exactly. There is something intangible that this team has that has been sorely missing in the past. We have grown accustomed to the Red Wings losing games like this. The fact that they found a way to win tonight proves to me that this is a different team.
hillbillywingsfan 794 Report post Posted October 31, 2007 Wow.. that was the most exciting end to a boring game that I have ever seen.. way to be clutch Flip!... Damn that was awesome ending to one of the most boring hockey games I have ever watched in my life! are you 2 related?
Datsyukian Geek 2 Report post Posted October 31, 2007 I officially start my "Osgood For Starting Goaltender" campaign tonight. What a goal by Filppula. It is simply outstanding that he and Hudler seem to be finally breaking out of their respected slumps. I keep saying it, but I think the success of this team firmly rests on the ability of the second line to produce. It produced tonight, and the Wings succeeded. Let's keep it up. I'll join that party, thank you!

SuperCalaFilppulastic! 34 Report post Posted October 31, 2007 I agree with the boring game sentiment. But it was worth staying up for, for sure. I'm glad more and more people are seeing that Ozzie may not be flashy or scream superstar, but he is still SOLID. Solid is important.
theman19 47 Report post Posted October 31, 2007 (edited) ozzie just seems to be able to handle these >20 shot games ya know? he never was a goalie that needed alot of shots to stay sharp. We all know hasek can be tempermental,..what are we gonna do if he doesn't play to ozzie's level? Edited October 31, 2007 by theman19
seeinred 1,488 Report post Posted October 31, 2007 lucky win tonight for the Wings. they looked tired and sloppy. fingers crossed for thursday... Completely agree, but you gotta be good to be lucky and lucky to be good. Also, I find it kind of odd that the reason some people said Howard wouldn't get the back-up spot is because he's young and eager and would be putting pressure on Dom for his job. Kinda like what Ozzie's doing now, eh?

BlueMonk 102 Report post Posted October 31, 2007 This was a good win. Wings battled hard at the end of a tie game. This team can skate and it can hit, something noticeably lacking in other trips to Edmonton, which is always a fast and hard hitting team. Osgood solid in net again. Dude, I've been on that since the 2nd half of last year once he got past his injuries. I feel like he's been the better goalie throughout that time and I'm glad people are finally starting to realize that he's the real deal. He's a smart goalie who is just about perfect positionally. He doesn't make the flashy plays but he's pretty much always where he needs to be to make the save. Considering so much of his game is mental, it doesn't surprise me that he's still capable of playing so strong and even stronger. He said he felt last year like he was becoming a better goalie as he worked on new techniques and whatnot and it's known that he works very hard in practice. I don't know...as I've always said, I'm not someone who just loves Osgood because he's Osgood. He's a great team guy and I like him, but the bottom line is he's playing great, great hockey. Let him keep going. If it were anyone else who was "injured" it would be Osgood's job to lose at this time. I say it ought to stay that way.

I don't think it will stay this "pretty" perse but I'm just getting a good vibe. I think some of our young guys have learned a bit more about what it takes to win come playoff time. And again, not to harp on Osgood, but there's something about him shining this year that takes me back to how things used to be and how I wish they'd stayed. I hate how so many years had so many ugly issues revolving around goalie issues. If they kept Hasek out of the picture and just stuck with Osgood (who most absolutely would've won the Cup in '02) I think we skip a lot of bad memories with guys like Legace and Cujo and of course, Hasek again when he decided to come back. I feel like there's some redemption going on. I dig it.
HockeyCrazy3033 168 Report post Posted October 31, 2007 Babs saying nothing but great things about Ozzie. Talking about how solid he's been and then John Keating asked him if there was any anticipation to Ozzie playing against the Flames. Babs reply? There is no anticipation, Ozzie is starting. But we can't keep letting teams hang around all game, we've all seen the lucky bounce at the end of the game go their way (into the Wings net!). Toast to the Victory! If you want more creativity, go get Ron Wilson and spend the rest of the season with a GPS trying to locate your heart. This is why Holland brought him in, not to take anything away from the players without them this system doesn't work, but this is what it's all about. Third Man In 2,091 Report post Posted October 31, 2007 A couple thoughts on tonight's game: 1. Is Cleary snakebit or what? He's created so much, both on his own and for others (witness his setup on the last PP). He could have twice as many points. 2. Dustin Penner looks a bit lost out there. I was at the Ducks/Oilers game Sunday, and watching tonight was more of the same. Perhaps too much pressure on the kid after the high-profile deal, eh? Aussie_Wing 354 Report post Posted October 31, 2007 Shattered I had to go out and miss the final period. I went out thinking we would lose then I get home and see Filppula scored the game winner with less than a minute remaining! What a champ! I would've gone nuts listening to it live. I feel like there's some redemption going on. I dig it. IMO he's the face of the Wings when it comes to goaltending. He's been in the Wings system since his late teens, and has done/been through everything with this club. He's a great guy, very, very good goaltender, and an excellent team player. Plus you won't find more loyal guys to their team than Oz. He's amazing. I don't care what goalies come in and out of Detroit because when it all comes down to it, Chris is the only one that matters. *Well maybe not the ONLY one, but most important. * lol I thought they put Dom on IR, and that was already decided... but maybe I misunderstood what I read earlier. Congrats to Ozzie! It was asked if Ozzie or Howard would start. Edited October 31, 2007 by HockeyCrazy3033

I think some of our young guys have learned a bit more about what it takes to win come playoff time. Definitely there will be a slump or two this season, at which point the sky will fall and we should trade all the bums and fire the bum behind the bench and fire the bum twice who makes all the decisions in the office. Spot on with the last point there for sure. Look at Flip tonight. He scored some major effort goals in the playoffs last year and tonight was a case where it would have been very, VERY easy to say, "Ok, tough building, late night, let's go to OT, take the point, and see where it goes from there." Not Flip. Game-winner in the last half-minute of the game shows me that these guys are playing 60 minutes of hockey. That itself is a kind of grit. With the talent the Wings have, if they're going to give us that kind of effort every night, we're in for a treat this season that just might last all the way to June.
