as a spartan fan, I am glad this happened. Izzo will use this as motivation. Plus this game was an exhibition game and doesn't count so it will have zero impact in college hoops during the season. Make no mistakes, spartans will be ready.

Here's why it's not as bad.

When Michigan goes to a bowl game this year, what are the announcers going to talk about? App State.

What has Pontiac been showing as the game changing performance all year? App State.

What's the legacy of Lloyd, Hart, and Henne? App State.

Which game is in the record books? App State

However, part of the reason I think the App. State was so bad though, is because the next week Michigan got smoked by Oregon before anyone knew that Oregon was that good of a team.

When the Spartans make the tournament this year, will the GVSU game get mentioned? Possibly, probably in passing. In terms of the amount of press this will get, I'm guessing overall it will be less than when MSU lost to George Washington a fews years ago.

Oh well. s*** happens. I certainly dished it out when UM lost to App State, I can take it when the Spartans lose.

And, since I did go to GV, I actually am pretty happy for them. While GV is known for football, their basketball program is pretty good as well. Hopefully this win gets them a little more recognition.

As a Spartan and a Laker, I have conflicted feelings about this.

It sucks, no doubt. But its not as bad as App. State. It doesn't ruin the season.

Go ahead and live in denial. But to say that losing to app. state who PLAYS DIVISION ONE TEAMS, and are a 3 TIME CHAMPS(back-to-back-to-back) is worse than losing to a division 2 CRAP team like gvsu is totally rediculous. The only plus side for the spartans is that it was an exhibition game. But still, them losing to gvsu is NO DOUBT more pathetic than the maize and blue losing to app. state. By far. Time to face reality.

ok fact check time

#1 It was an exhibiton

#2 Appy State won back-to-back championships in the I-AA (subdivison)

#3 It was an exhibition

#4 GV State plays St. Joe's and they are apart of the Divison I. Look at the schedule next time.

#5 It was an exhibition

#6 This was supposed to be the year that Michigan was going to not only dominate the Big Ten but contest for the National Championship. Michigan State is going to contest for the big ten title this year in hoops, but if you think they are in the top 4 of NCAA basetball teams, you are crazy. Michigan WAS a top 4 college football team entering the season.

#7 It was an exhibition

#8 It was basketball. Stranger things have happened. How many freakin upsets happen in the tournament WHEN it counts.

#9 It was an exhibition

#10 You are a Michigan fan who had their face in the mud with embarassment with the Michigan loss to Appy State that you are reaching for anything and going AH HA!!

#11 IT WAS AN EXHIBITION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, you keep on holding onto that "it was an exhibition game" talk. Cause is it doesnt matter here. The point is, now all you state fans can shut your yap. Cause now we can throw it right back at ya. HAHA! The ONE thing State is "supposed" to be superior at, they lose to grand f-ing valley. And trying to talk about Michigan's year just makes you look foolish. Michigan is ranked 12th in the nation. If Michigan beats OSU, Michigan will be the ONLY team in the entire Big Ten to go undefeated(within the conference that is). So all and all I would say not too shabby for a team that lost to app. state in the very beginning of the year. We'll see what State does this year after losing to a crap team like gv. HAHAHA!

#1: It still happened.

#2: True. Something that can't be said about Grand Valley's basketball team.

#3: It still happened.

#4: That's not the St. Joseph's Hawks of the Atlantic 10 conference. They're in Philadelphia. The St. Joseph's that GVSU will play is the St. Joseph's Pumas of the Great Lakes Valley Conference in Indiana.

#5: It still happened.

#6: Michigan was actually #5, but details details. Michigan State is ranked #8. Not exactly a big difference, and MSU is the odds-on Big Ten favorite.

#7: It still happened.

#8: The lower seeds in the Big Dance are filled with teams that won their conference, usually a grueling process because it's win or go home, and they're usually only slightly less talented than the teams they beat. This isn't VCU over Duke or George Mason over UConn. VCU and George Mason are quality teams and nobody would question their D-I status.

#9: It still happened.

#10: It is not a very long reach to make fun of Sparty for losing to Grand Valley. Don't really need to reach anyway, because one, you lost to Grand Valley, and two, you lost to the team that lost to App. State, which says exactly what about the Spartans? Can a Spartan fan really make fun of Michigan for losing to Appalachian State when the Spartans lost to Michigan? Granted, Michigan is likely to lose to MSU in basketball, but that hasn't happened yet. And as MSU fans were absolutely insufferable about the App State thing - there was talk about how Michigan fans were "put in their place", how MSU was going to take over as the top football team in the state......well, turnabout is fair play.

#11: It. Still. Happened. You can cry "exhibition" all you want. The arena was sold out, the players were playing hard, and the coaches were coaching. Neitzel racked up 40 minutes, and all the starters played significant time. Exhibition or not, there was a basketball game between Michigan State of Division I and Grand Valley State of Division II, which Grand Valley State won. It's part of history now.

The point is, now all you state fans can shut your yap.

Yes but the Buckeye fans can still bring it and they have brought it more than State fans have.

Michigan is no doubt superior in football than State, probabably always will be too. The loss against Appy State was talked about on all NATIONAL media for days and weeks, probably will always be talked about too. You cannot tell me that an EXHIBITION loss against GV State will hold the same weight.

Ummm...wasnt talking about osu. I was talking about state. As in MICHIGAN State. Never said a word about the buckeyes. And like I said, even AFTER losing to app. state, Michigan is ranked 12 in the nation. Let's see the Spartans salvage things like the Wolverines have.

We have? I mean, we cheered like hell when it happened, but we only use it when a UM fan gets mouthy.

This is nothing of the magnitude that UM vs. App. State was in football.

Although, this seems to be a common time for huge upsets in every sport. Even in pre-season games, MSU is still miles and away better than secondary schools like Grand Valley State.

I dont know what the ridiculous arguements are about in here, though. I guess because I'm not a fan of either UM or MSU, I don't really understand.

Thank you. This is somehow lost in this thread. RedWingsFever mentioned that the sparties loss to GV state is bigger than Michigan's loss to App State. It seems like no one can provide a viable reason why that is so, if you believe RedWingsFever.

Final word here: U-M losing to App State, and MSU losing to GVSU is joke. They are embarrassing to both schools. If MSU fans want to mock U-M for losing to App State go ahead we deserve it, but just remember you lost to the team that lost to App State.

Both games were an embarassment to the respective schools, I think you're right.

As far as losing to the team that lost to App State, all that means is UM finally started beating the teams they're supposed to beat.

As a UM fan I'll have to say the App State loss was more embarassing simply becasue GVSU was an exhibition win. However laugh as you may UM will probably be ranked in the top ten and playing for a BCS bowl while State is hoping to become bowl elgiable. Go Lions.

..and we will laugh when the Spartans are in the NCAA college basketball tournament and the Wolverines are in the NIT.

Typical response. Lets talk about basketball when there is still plenty of football to be played

This is a "bigger embarassment" thread, not a football entirely thread.

Did you read the thread or just my last post. The comparison was with the Michigan football season loss to appy state and the michigan state exhibition loss to gv state, and which one was more embarassing, and a michigan fan brough in michigan state football.

NO ONE WAS TALKING ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE FOOTBALL.

Let's review

As a UM fan I'll have to say the App State loss was more embarassing simply becasue GVSU was an exhibition win. However laugh as you may UM will probably be ranked in the top ten and playing for a BCS bowl while State is hoping to become bowl elgiable. Go Lions.
