rick zombo 3,739 Report post Posted November 16, 2007 I remember that, too. Couldn't find a reference or link, but I know I heard him say that, as well. I can't remember his explanation, though. I think it was maybe in the tribute show when he had his number retired... He said it during the on ice celebration after the cup clinching game at home against the Hurricanes. Darren Pang was interviewing him. Here's the link: @ the 8:20 mark.
haroldsnepsts 4,826 Report post Posted November 16, 2007 Funny how everyone has their own feelings and opinions. For me the 2002 Cup was the most satisfying. I knew what winning 3 cups in 6 years meant for our team in the history of the NHL. If a team can win 3 cups with the same core, that seperates the men from the boys in my opinion. With the Salary Cap, we may not see a team win 3 cups in 6 years or less for a very loooooong time. I think you're right. That's also why I probably rank 97 as the best one, and 2002 the least exciting to me. Because I think the 97 and 98 wins were with teams that could still be built under the cap. But the 2002 team, there's no way. He said it during the on ice celebration after the cup clinching game at home against the Hurricanes. Darren Pang was interviewing him. Here's the link: @ the 8:20 mark. So when they interviewed him seconds after winning his third Cup, he said that one was the most satisfying? shocking! I'd be pretty surprised if at the time he said "I think the first one was best" when he's literally just won his third.
m96m 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2008 I know this is an old topic, but I decided to post in here rather than start a new thread. Forbes has recently released an article called "The Greatest Sports Teams of All-Time: By the Numbers", and the 2001-02 Red Wings team ranks as the best team in NHL History. This is how they made they rankings: We decided on a mathematical approach to historically rank the top single-season teams. Counting up wins in a season relative to the competition (how balanced was the league in each season?) yielded us a G-Score, as in "greatness," a standard deviation measurement that shows the degree to which a team stood out among the field in a given year. The 01-02 Wings were ranked: Record: 51-17-10; 116 points G-Score: 7.7 Won Stanley Cup. As for the NHL, the honor of best single-season team in NHL history goes to the 2001-02 Detroit Red Wings, a team that racked up 116 points (51 wins, 12 ties or overtime losses) in a league that was more balanced than it was during the mini-dynasties of the Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders and Edmonton Oilers that stretched from 1976 to 1990. The other top NHL teams were: 1988-89 Calgary Flames Record: 54-17-9; 117 points G-Score: 7.5 Won Stanley Cup 1988-89 Montreal Canadiens Record: 53-18-9; 115 points G-Score: 7.4 Stanley Cup runner-up 1998-99 Dallas Stars Record: 51-19-12; 114 points G-Score: 7.2 Won Stanley Cup 2000-01 Colorado Avalanche Record: 52-16-10; 118 points G-Score: 7.1 Won Stanley Cup Where do you think the 1996-97 Red Wings team would fit in? shadow47 1 Report post Posted January 30, 2008 (edited) The skate with Konstantinov in 97-98 is an immortal moment in sports, that said, my pick is 01-02. Almost the perfect season. 02 vs. 97(prob. better than 98) for comparison: ...............96-97.........................................01-02 Shanahan-Yzerman-Lapointe.....Shanahan-Yzerman-Holmstrom Kozlov-Larionov-Fedorov............Robitaille-Larionov-Fedorov Maltby-Draper-McCarty..................Maltby-Draper-McCarty Kocur-Brown-Sandstrom...............Devereaux-Datsyuk-Hull Lidstrom-Murphy............................ Lidstrom-Olausson Fetisov-Konstantinov......................Chelios-Duchesne Ward-Rouse..................................Fischer-Dandenault ..................................................................Slegr Vernon-Osgood...................................Hasek-Legace The only diff. for the 98 team is Macoun, Eriksson, Gilchrist and Holmstrom replacing Konstantinov, Sandstrom, Brown (who split time with Gilchrist), Ward, and of course Vernon gone. Nev 1,085 Report post Posted January 30, 2008 rick zombo - great link, thanks for posting As for which team is the best? I'm going to take Bowman's answer on this. When he was asked once which was the best team of ALL the teams he coached, he said the 02 Wings. Better than his DOMINANT Canadiens teams of the 70s with Lafleur, Shutt, Robinson, Dryden, Gainey, Lemaire etc. Better than his stacked Penguins team with Lemieux, Jagr, Murphy, Mullen, Francis, Coffey etc. And if it's good enough for Scotty, its good enough for me I mean, for crying out loud, the 02 Wings had a 4th line with Pavel Datsyuk and Brett Hull!!!!! betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted January 30, 2008 The 2001-02 Red Wings were the greatest assemblage of talent in one NHL locker room ever. It was never seen before and it'll never be seen again. Period. I don't care if "it couldn't be done under the cap," fortunately for us there was no cap and we got to see 9 absolute giants of the game coached by another giant of the game.
