Leafs close to firing GM Ferguson

There is no way Yzerman will ever be a part of any other organization other than the Wings. End of story.

Bowman kinda the same, but no way Yzerman.

While I really don't see Scotty or Stevie going to the Leafs either, there's no law that says it can't happen or that the Leafs can't be interested. It never hurts to ask. And I'd be surprised if Stevie didn't at least entertain the idea. It would be a very attractive offer to be GM of a historied Original Six franchise that is in need of some serious attention. What a great opportunity.

Wings dismiss Leafs rumours

Windsor Star

Team execs reportedly on Toronto wish list

Dave Waddell, Windsor Star

Published: Tuesday, November 27, 2007

DETROIT - If the Toronto Maple Leafs are seeking front office help, Red Wings general manager Ken Holland says they'll have to look elsewhere than Detroit.

With rumours intensifying about the possible firing of general manager John Ferguson Jr., the Toronto media are offering plenty of free advice on who should get the job with the names of Holland, assistant GM Jim Nill, vice-president Steve Yzerman and former coach Scotty Bowman being liberally tossed about.

"No one from the Leafs has contacted me or asked permission to talk to anyone in our organization that I'm aware of," Holland said, as the Wings prepared to host the Calgary Frames tonight (7 p.m., Versus).

"I'm aware of the names being mentioned but everyone is happy here. I'm happy here. As far as this Toronto stuff is concerned, let me put it to you this way, I don't expect anybody to be leaving Detroit soon."

While he dismissed any interest in the Toronto job, the Maple Leafs aren't likely to find a warm reception from Nill either.

In fact, Holland said the Leafs already missed their chance to hire Nill.

"Jim was part of the interview process three, four or five years ago for the Toronto job," Holland said.

"They interviewed him and they chose not to hire him. I doubt he'd be interested now."

When asked recently about the Leafs' job, Nill said he still wasn't interested in the Toronto job.

"Why would I want to go there?" said Nill, who confirmed he has turned down GM job offers from other teams over the years.

"The way we do things here, I've already got most of the responsibilities and input that a general manager would have. Ken and I work really well together.

"I'm comfortable, I'm well-compensated and I like the organization. I know which side my bread is buttered on."

Even if the Leafs were interested in either Holland or Nill, it would be unlikely they'd even get the chance to speak with them. Both are under contract through 2010 and the Wings have the right to refuse anyone permission to talk to them about leaving Detroit.

The Leafs did contact Wings senior vice-president Jimmy Devellano around last June's draft about talking to Bowman and received permission to approach the 74-year-old retired coach.

EARNED THE RIGHT

"Scotty told me he just wanted to listen to what they had to say," Devellano said."We wouldn't prevent him from doing what he wanted to do. He's earned that right.

"After talking to them, he told us he wasn't interested in the Leafs because he didn't know those people (Leafs ownership).

"He's happy here doing consulting, some scouting for us and traveling a bit with the team. He and Mike Babcock have a great relationship and talk just about every day."

As for Yzerman, Devellano said he has settled nicely into his vice- president's role and has repeatedly said how much he enjoys apprenticing under Holland. The Wings are also compensating Yzerman handsomely.

Devellano dismissed the threat of a Toronto raid on the Wings' front office as being more the product of a hyperactive media market.

"Our people are sexy, who wouldn't want them?" Devellano said "But they all have contracts and I don't think they want to go anywhere.

"The media in Toronto are dreaming in Technicolor."

Kind of funny how apparently the Leafs don't want to win (or don't care), yet they seem to be hell-bent on hiring Scotty Bowman to revamp the hockey operations.

He seems like the last guy you'd go after if you didn't care about winning.

"No one from the Leafs has contacted me or asked permission to talk to anyone in our organization that I'm aware of," Holland said, as the Wings prepared to host the Calgary Frames tonight (7 p.m., Versus).

They technically don't need permission to talk to Bowman (as he doesn't have a contract), they just asked the first time, anyways.

That's how I feel. Stevie is currently in a "make work" role right now with the Wings. He's certainly getting some good experience and is probably quite content, but what are his aspirations? Maybe the Leafs can offer him a position that the Wings currently do not have available. Still, I think it is unlikely that he leaves Detroit.

With Bowman, he's been with 5 different NHL teams and had most of his success with Montreal. I don't see any reason why he would be adverse leaving the Wings. The only thing I can think of is that at his age, he may simply be content in his consulting role and isn't interested in taking on a large role with the Leafs. That said, if he wasn't at all interested, he wouldn't have met with them.....then again, no harm in listening.

Yeah, I often heard people comment that Management is concerned about winning they are only concerned about the bottom line, but I don't buy that at all. Prior to the lockout, they were one of the highest spending teams in the league and they are now spending to the cap. If they weren't concerned about winning, why would they spend so much on the team? If they spent less, they would make more money.

Ah, the daily Leafs thread at lwg.com....

It seems like most of this crap comes from the Toronto Sun, I dont know about things out East, but here in Edmonton and Calgary, the Sun is basically a tabloid that no one takes seriously.

So Toronto is interested in Stevie, Bowman, Holland or ass. GM Nill? What the crap is that? They should try building a good staff instead of trying to steal all of ours.

Bowman is a hall of fame coach, but speculating that he would be a great GM is ridiculous. He certainly wasn't in Buffalo. On the other hand, he'd be a marquis signing on name alone, so it could be a good PR move for the Leafs.

another loss for the Leafs tonight in the shootout, shouldn't have even been there in the first place but Sundin bailed them out and got the tying goal with 15 seconds left. Got to admire that guys heart.

The Leafs right now just cant get it done losers of 7 of their last 8 games, I think the JFJ expired date is within days.
