Great win tonight after the last 2 outings that we had. Here are my thoughts on the game.

1. "PAIN TRAIN". I was going through cold turkey waiting for him to finally drop the gloves. Watch how his play picks up from now on. I'm disappoined, though, that he didn't punch that s***bag Phaneuf after he was down. He knew the PAIN TRAIN was getting ready to take over the fight, so he drops like a *****.

2. The odd-man rushes are getting ridiculous. Rafalski and Lidstrom have poor communication skills back there that are creating all the odd-man rushes on the PP.

3. Franzen looks like a beach whale out there. He laid a great hit on Phaneuf in the 1st period, but did nothing the rest of the game. I know he's not a scorer, but we still need more points from him offensively.

4. Samuelsson's spin around backhand moves are getting on my freaking nerves. What's worse is that he's back to playing the point on the PP. Does he have to cost us a game before someone tells him to cut out the crap?

5. Great to see Datsyuk scoring again. Hank took a backseat to him tonight. Who says Pavel's lost his scoring touch?

6. I hope Drapes gets better. Maltby and Cleary didn't look the same without him.

He really looked like he wanted to be on the ice and not in the stands. Just looked like a beaten man. It's heartbreaking.

It is, because in his prime, he's exactly the kind of player Detroit needs.

He's like Downey, but a better fighter and more offensive upside.

If we had a guy like DMac in his prime, this board would be going nuts for him.

what a bunch of goons. Phanuff (however you spell it) is an ass hitting Hudler at center ice. He probably out weighs hudler by 50-60 pounds. What a goon.

Yeah, open ice hits are lame, and what's with him hitting someone smaller than he is? What a jerk.

Can someone please describe the Lilja fight. I missed it. :(

I saw the Hudler hit. Phanny left his feet. But I didn't see the Probie-like response.

Lilja punch, Phaneuf punch, Lilja uses his oak-like strength to take Phaneuf to the ground.

Not exactly one of the all-time classics.

I thought it was a clean hit, BTW. I didn't see Phaneuf leave his feet. But Lilja earned his paycheck tonight for that anyway.

Out of sentimentality for the guy, I'd love to. But in all honesty, he just doesn't fit with the team anymore. :(

How about Mats Sundin for league minimum then.

So he's not supposed to hit him? So its ok for Kronwall to gun for open ice hits because he's not as big as Dion? It doesnt work that way. Not his fault if Hudler's small. He was also getting chippy with Phaneuf throughout the game...thats a result of it.

But way to go Pain Train to step up...this is without a doubt an effect of having Downey. I absolutely love this guy!

Destroying him in open ice is fine and it was a clean hit I guess, but there was no reason for him to leave his feet.

I still think of D-Mac as a Wing. When they showed him in the stands, my first instinct was "what's he doing there, is he injured?" Took me a second to remember his very forgettable stint in Calgary and that he's pretty much retired, and my second thought was "damn, he shouldn't have to sit in the stands with the commoners, he oughta be in a box or something."

Downey's been great for the team, but come one. you can't attribute everything to the guy. Lilja got in a couple fights last season, before Downey was on the team.

Hudler was getting under his skin though. Not to make Phaneuf out as a big bad ass...but when you get feisty with a noted big hitter like this...things like this happen. He sees its Hudler he's going to give it an extra "umph".

I have no problem with the Phaneuf hit. Hudler was chirping at him, waving his glove in his face, during the game. He's gotta be looking out for that hit instead of admiring his pass. And the Red Wings responded appropriately, with Lilja challenging him.

Good win for the Wings. Datsyuk was ridiculous!

double post.

what's up with the site lately?

lagging for anyone else?

Yep, its lagging. Lilja's fought before, but how many times in the aid of a teammate? I dont think its a coincidence that it happens now is all im saying. I think the message Downey is preaching is working imo. Years prior i think Lilja comes in with a shove when the linesmen are in the vicinity...and it ends there.

I think most of his fights (and that's not many) have been in defense of a teammate.

I actually posted the same thing Lou did on the previous page.

I admit it's not a sure thing Lilja doesn't step in anyway, but this team seems different to me this year.

Don't get me wrong, I love that Downey (and Drake before the shield) are stepping up for teammates. It's been sorely needed on this team, especially after the beating they took during many regular season games last year.

It's just funny to me now that Downey is even getting credit when Lillypads fights. :D The guy walks on water.

Neither was. The Moen fight just came out of a basic scrum, and the Sharp fight just happened out of nowhere. In fact if im remembering correctly, id say this is the first time anyone on the Wings aside from Downey has come to the defense of a teammate by actually dropping the gloves and fighting in a few years now. Is that just a coincidence? I really dont think so.

I think the media guys blew the call saying Huds was agitating him earlier in the game. The camera got to them late and it looked like Huds was just pushing back on Dion who was giving him a little extra by the Wings bench. At any rate, Lilly stepping up was excellent not only because it was immediate, but because it allowed Babs to save Downey in case Godard or even Iginla got a little fiesty later on. Don't want those guys teeing off on Dats and Zetts without having your big gun in your holster!

Cheers to Tuesday night sauce!

Fine fine. It's all because of Downey.

Datysuk's goal? Downey.

Franzen's hit on Phaneuf? Downey.

Anytime anyone does anything remotely physical on the Wings? Downey.

:P

I thought Phaneuf's hit was great, and represented everything that is right with hockey..

I hope our resident midget learned that it's generally unwise to shoot your mouth off to the big boys. He must have been homeschooled - it's apparent he never spent much time on a playground.

Props to Lilja for droppin' 'em with Dion. I wish he would learn to fight though. He's big and strong enough that he should be tougher than he is. Still, it's way better than nothing, which is what our response would be without Lilja and Downey. (so long as Drake is broken). Well, maybe not nothing - I'm sure Malts or Cheli would have got a facewash in when the linesmen were safely in between Dion and themselves.

Props to Dion for pitching his helmet. Hopefully he's coming around in that regard. Always bothered me when he didn'tr - though there were instances where he just didn't have time.

OK i just saw the hit.. I don't think there's really anything wrong with it. The big thing is the huge height and weight difference... Still glad to see Lilly drop the gloves and well hold onto the jersey :P wasn't much of a fight at all, but glad to see us sticking up for one an other

Hehe... I was in utter shock at what I saw tonight. Lilja fighting. :D

Great work by the Pain Train to defend Hudler, though. He just earned a tremendous amount of respect from me by doing that. Protecting your teammates is really an important intangeable, and it was great to see Lilja do that. Dare I hop on the Pain Train bandwagon again? Perhaps... :P

But seriously, great work by him. It really goes a long way with me that he took on a guy like Phaneuf, who is no stranger to dropping the gloves. The fight was a wash: a few clutches here and there wasn't really great, but it's the aspect of Lilja going out of his way to protect his teammates is what impressed me so much. Great work by him tonight, and it's nice he was able to have me sing praises his way by playing good hockey again.

Hudler needs to shut his mouth and stop f***ing around with the big boys. Who does he think he is anyways? While I admit, Phaneuf was getting excessive at one point, but it's still part of the game, and Hudler was being a little ***** the whole game. He kinda got what he deserved on that. But hey: his play on that part got Lilja to drop the gloves again, so that's fine with me. ;)

Great work by the rest of the team tonight. Some guys like Rafalski continue to piss me off with blunderous giveaways, but other than that, solid game tonight. Datsyuk played great. :)

Not just anything physical, but fighting in defense of a teammate? Yes! When it hasnt happened in so long here...and now a guy comes in and shows how its supposed to be done, and others start to follow? He does get credit for that!

Now that you mention it though, im pretty sure i heard Downey yelling from the bench "shoot it!" when Datsyuk scored. So yep,...that actually was Downey too :P
