I just love this article - How the Mighty Wings Have Fallen

It seems clear the Wings are on a downward spiral. The question is whether that will simply take them to the middle of the Western Conference pack for a couple of years, or whether the fall will be much greater than that.

I remember reading that at the time and thinking, "Isn't it just a tad bit early to be calling that?"

It's also a bit early to start gloating. The Wings haven't won anything yet. How many times have we seen them have a great regular season just to fail in the spring? Nothing matters but winning the Stanley Cup.

Though I do think it is early enough 1 1/2 years later to point out the Wings are not in "the middle of the western conference" or much worse.

Nobody's gloating, but this guy was calling for the collapse of the Wings, stating that they weren't a top-10 team anymore and might not even make the playoffs. All the Wings have done since then is finish tied for the most points last season, come within 2 wins of the SCF's and started this season 28-7-3, while playing some of the best *team* hockey we've seen.

What's funny is people that continue to write garbage like this whenever the Wings go on a few game losing streak only to look like idiots when they turn around and win 8 games straight immediately thereafter.

I have a NHL Preview for the 2000-01 season. They pretty much were writting off the Wings after their second straight loss to Colorado in the 2nd round of the playoffs, saying the dynasty is over, they're getting to old, they're going down hill, etc., typical stuff we've heard every year. 7 years later, we're still overall one of, if not, the best team in the League.

If I could insert a sound into this thread, it would be that cartoon trombone "wahhh-wahhhhhhhh".

What a loser, probably a Leafs fan. "My team sucks, so, BASH THE WINGS!!!"

He could probably write for Nashville and Denver's rags though.

Maybe you didn't realize that story is from LAST year. Since pretty much the day he wrote that joke, the Wings have been the most dominate team in the league and came a few injuries from winning the beloved Cup.

That is a far cry from the "evident downward spiral" Cox describes.

It never fails... every year someone predicts doom and gloom for the 'aging' wings, yet it never materializes.

My personal favorite is Allan Muir's predictions for the last three years:

05-06: Doom and Gloom is imminent, due to aging vets

06-07: Core gone, Wings barely make playoffs, if at all

07-08: Detroit Red Wings = Jason Voorhees of professional sports. Nothing seems to kill them. They always seem to come back stronger than ever.

I remember reading that at the time and thinking, "Isn't it just a tad bit early to be calling that?"

"Even a smart, experienced general manager like Ken Holland can't just patch over those kinds of personnel losses and warts."

"the start of this season has been indicative of a team that no longer is a top-10 club."

sure, this was the beginning of '06. but we tied for most points in the regular season AND made it to the WCFs. and what players are on the roster now that weren't at the beginning of '06? you've got rafalski replacing schieds and some of the new ahl guys? maybe some addition by subtraction by giving the minuets of lang and williams to rex and flip. obviously, the players are more skilled than people thought they were (zetta, dats, homer, hudler and flip are an average 158th pick, and our top line alone being an average 213th pick) but i think that a lot of credit has to go to babcock. yeah, the team struggled in early '06, but they really haven't looked back much from there. sure, they didn't get a cup last year, but neither did 29 other teams, and most of them haven't been labeled failures.

thanks for posting this. good trip down memory lane. : )

Jeez, you're a total homer and a poor sport. Do you really expect to win the cup every year? If championships are 'all that matters', you should move to NYC and become a Yankees fan, because you are every bit as bad as they are!

I love the Wings and, yes, I would love for them to win the cup. But, as fans, we should be thankful that we have an organization that is committed to winning and puts out a competitive team every year. Most teams and most fans (in any sport) could only dream of the kind of success that the Wings have had for the past 16 years.

I also remember about 2 weeks before the playoffs started last year I was watching a show on the Score in Toronto. They were all talking up everybody except Detroit and said Detroit had no chance at all, what so ever, to come out of the first round let alone the second round because we just weren't good enough to compete in the West. Totally underestimated the determination of our team.

True, but we should still have more than 3 cups. The last 3 seasons this team had the most points in the league each year, and made the finals zero times. This year, the cup is a must with the way this team is rolling.

People have been saying the Wings are finished since 97. Its always they are too old, too slow, too weak, too whatever. It is epically true of the Canadian media. With Ottawa playing well, the Wings never get the credit they deserve.
