McCarty meets with Red Wings

I don't know who said it or when but someone posted that the bottom line is if Mac isn't better or equal to one of our roster spots in some way shape or form he won't make the team. If he is he will. No one is saying he should be handed a roster spot, he is only being given the opportunity to earn one. If Gordie Howe decided tomorrow he wanted to come out of retirement and could proved that he would be as good or better than one of the players on the roster then so be it. If Mac were simply being handed a spot he wouldn't be starting in Flint.

I agree. Plus we can be sure that Red Wings management would never bring in guy who is not capable to play in the NHL and add something to the team. And if Mac can really get in shape and actually play good, he might be back, I am sure lots of people would come to his first game as Red Wing again just to see him in the uniform. And as someone posted earlier, Mac (IF capable of playing NHL) would not be worse than Drake/Downey.

McCarty just scored in Flint's game tonight. That's one goal and two assists in three games so far.

Heck Yeah!I would love having McCarty on our team and we really could start the grind line again and he would just add to the veterans on this team which would be like the sprinkles on the cake and he does bring some intimidation and fighting to the game!

 Yeah, that'll do it. I can see Pronger saying "I hate playing Detroit, they got sprinkles on their cake, that scares the hell outta me and Neids. "

neidermier: "hate the f***in sprinkles"

Brian Nurke: "Detroit just upped the ante for the entire league with those sprinkles. Now how are we gonna keep a lid on it! There's no place for sprinkles in todays NHL." :ranting:

Gordie Howe/Darren McCarty An extremely unequal comparison. Although a return from Gordie is as likely as a return from Mac.

If Mac was bound for a start in the NHL or even the AHL would'nt he have at least 6 pts in three games???

I don't remember Mac being on the Red Wings roster for his goals and assists.

P.S. He also got in a fight (and won, of course) tonight.

After tonight I wouldn't mind having him back if proven. Couldn't they sign him to a contract and just have him in the press box, or I don't know one way and two way contracts to well, but could they sign him to a contract involving him coming and going from GR but not be able to be picked up off waivers?

So, an NHL veteran of 17 years and 3-time Stanley Cup champion has one goal and two assists in three games in the IHL ?

Come on.... that's really not a reason to optimistic.

I love Darren for everything he has done for the Detroit Red Wings, but I really think it's going to be a huge challenge for him to even get a contract in Grand Rapids.

He won't play for the Wings.

Let's get real here..

Yeah, its unlikely.

But the reason why he will not probably make it, is not that he score too little points. He was never in the game because of his scoring abilities.

To be fair, he hasn't played in forever. Right now he's just trying to regain some semblance of fitness.

Having said that, I still think his chance of making the wings is <1%, but I can see him making Grand Rapids if he keeps it up *AND* stays injury free.

Good luck to him, but I ain't holding my breath.

This thread is starting to get ridiculous. So now, the MAC bashers are complaining because he didn't score ENOUGH in three games? He'd be getting ripped if he didn't score ANY, so he scores and shows he's still a factor, albeit in the IHL but he's gotta start somewhere, and he's still getting ripped. Just admit it, you guys are just looking for something to rip on him for no matter how much progress he's showing.

I think everone knows each other's opinions on MAC by now, but to keep coming here and stomping on anything positive he's doing is just annoying.

BTW thanks for the IHL updates on him folks!

That is exactly right. We are all like bitter ex-girlfriends! Or maybe we are just a little more realistic. I love make for what he did for the wings. He has not place here, maybe not anywhere in the NHL. I would love to see him in a uniform that is why I bought the Red Wings dvd box set...

That's my point. Everyone knows each other's opinion here by now, so what do people have to gain by continuing to stomp all over others cheering for him here? Remember, we're losing nothing by him trying to come back. Nothing.

Cheers.

They're called buzz killers. Usually unhappy folk who can't stand seeing someone else happy...or someone else do well. I don't know where if anywhere McCarty will end up above the IHL, but I just think it's fun to see him playing at any level. I have also been impressed with how he has handled himself with the fans and media, etc. here in Flint. It shows sincerity.

For anyone who cares ....

McCarty had a goal and an assist in Flints 4-3 OT loss.

http://www.pointstreak.com/stats/pro/boxsc...l?gameid=533863

Thanks for the real info.

I would be very interested to hear what his new teammates think about his presence there, his attitude, his performance, and the overall idea. Are they thinking its a joke with this old frikkin dude, or are they thinking "holy s***, this is a man on a mission, and I'm digging playing with this guy"? Especially his lines mates, and I always like to get the goalies opinions because they have such a unique perspective on the ice.

i agree..i dont see any harm in being optimistic for a guy who gave so much to this team even if it is highly unlikely he will ever make it up with the big club again..

Agreed. Nothing said in the last 2 pages of this thread that wasn't already said in the first 2 pages, just maybe meaner.

We should let this thread die its due death, and next Generals game or relevant news break, start a new thread called Marking McCarty or something to just keep tabs on his progress. Even though I know he doesn't have a snowballs chance in hell, I'm still damn interested in his progress.

I know he can't make it but it sure would be great if he did. I'm conflicted. I feel like that guy in Animal House when the drunk chick passes out in his bed, the Angel pops up on one of his shouders and the Devil pops up on the other and they argue about wether the kid should have sex with the passed out girl. Except i got Bettman on one shoulder and Don Cherry on the other. Bettman says Mcarty's washed up, no place in the new NHL for guys like him. Don Cherry says he's a beautiful Canadian boy with a heart of a Lion, he just wants to play the game of hockey, let him skate and give it try, what have ya got to loose. Let him skate, skate his brains out!

I just got back home from the Flint Generals game tonight and after seeing Darren play, I have to honestly say he has a shot at making the Wings, although it's a long one. He was physical and he had another goal and an assist tonight. He seems to play almost a Holmstrom like role with the Generals. He parks himself in front of the net, screens the goalie, moves the D out of the way and tries to shovel in rebounds. His skating is still pretty weak but that was never his strong point. All I can say is I wish him the best.
