edicius 3,269 Report post Posted January 16, 2008 That's the rumour. Who knows how much is true, but the Rangers can't do as poorly without him. The rumor, also, is that he's been playing on only one good foot as of late, masking a foot injury that's a lot worse than he'll let on. Jagr's damaged goods right now. Matt 1,049 Report post Posted January 16, 2008 Right now, he is not going anywhere. With Atlanta's win over the Wings, Atlanta is now tied for first place in their division. If Atlanta is a position to get into the playoffs come trade deadline, Hossa does not get traded. Not necessarily. If Waddell knows Hossa intends to test the market (as indicated above) -- he WILL trade him, even if it means damaging the club's playoff chances. Last year they went for broke at the deadline and were blasted right out of the playoffs... Instead of losing Hossa for nothing in July the organization will be better off, long term, to build up more assets. Because, the way I look at it, is that they parted with so much last year, got two playoff home gates out of it, and now come this summer they'll be out the prospects, picks and now their sniper 1B to Kovalchuk's 1A. I'd try to manage my losses and help build back what was lost in the failed trades at last year's deadline.
40#1Fan 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2008 from the Detroit Free Press: http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article...6018/&imw=Y DETROIT -- When Atlanta Thrashers Marian Hossa scored three goals in the first 22 minutes against the Detroit Red Wings, he might have been making a sales pitch to Detroit general manager Ken Holland as well as helping his team. Although the Thrashers would still like to re-sign Hossa, the consensus around the NHL is that Hossa wants a change of venue. Maybe he wants to come to Detroit. It sure looked that way to me as I watched Hossa play his best game of the season. The Red Wings would certainly be interested in Hossa, but they might not be first in line because they might not have the assets necessary to get a deal done. My guess for the early favorite for the Hossa sweepstakes would be Anaheim as No. 1 because they have Edmonton's first-round pick this season, plus prospects they can afford to move. There might also be a good fit with Pittsburgh, particularly if Atlanta GM Don Waddell is willing to give Ray Shero the opportunity to negotiate an extension with Hossa, who might be the winger that Sidney Crosby needs to carry the Penguins far in the playoffs. If Shero could be given permission to talk to Hossa, perhaps there could be a way the deal could be expanded to include Jordan Staal, who could be the young star that Atlanta needs. Also don't count out the Ottawa Senators, who understand Hossa's value because he used to play for them, or the Vancouver Canucks, who need scoring. The Boston Bruins are also a possibility. You also can't count out the Red Wings, who wouldn't want to see Anaheim land Hossa. Truthfully, Hossa hasn't played as well as the Thrashers would have liked this season. But he looked dangerous against the Red Wings, who are one of the NHL's best defensive teams. As fun as the Hossa situation is for fans, this is a messy, agonizing dilemma for Waddell. With their win over Detroit, the Thrashers truly can think about winning the Southeast Division. Waddell can't allow Hossa to get away for nothing, but he also has to keep this team in the hunt for a playoff spot. He's going to have to be creative, maybe making multiple deals -- one bringing in prospects and draft picks for Hossa and another bringing in a veteran forward to take his place in the top six or a steady defenseman to solidify the defense. Matt 1,049 Report post Posted January 16, 2008 I'd have to look over Anaheim's cap situation but if they re-sign Selanne, as expected, I think that would effectively take them out of the running. (I'd hope.) Another West contender, San Jose, would probably be better served to add to their blueline (Blake, Kuba, etc.) and they were big buyers at the deadline last year with Guerin and Rivet. Manny>Ozzie(by a long shot) 55 Report post Posted January 16, 2008 Hossa is acutally now an E4 according to Eklund, and I personally dont trust the guy any further than I can throw him.. however, I have yet to see too many E4s NOT come into fruation.... He seems very confident that is will happen http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=12626

He seems very confident that is will happen http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=12626 I haven't followed Eklund much but from the little I've seen of his site, I've never seen any of his predictions come true. He had Smyth signing with Calgary E5. But anyone with a slide rule could have figured out with big contracts like Iginla and Tanguay's on the books and with upcoming free agents like Kipersoff, Phaneuf and Regher there was no way they could have afforded Smyth. In all honesty, despite my brain telling me there's no way Hossa comes to Detroit I was still excited about the prospect. But now that Ek says it's almost certain, you can put money down that it won't happen. There has been proven cases where he's posted 'rumours' that have come from children and internet bloggers. 2probert4 8 Report post Posted January 16, 2008 Actually, the Wings would be able to acquire both cap-wise. The Wings have about $5.4 million in space right now which equates to around $12 million in full-season salary. By the time of the deadline, it will equate to even more. I think the figure is around $22 million in full-season salary. They can pick up anyone they want. Are you sure you read the amount correctly? To get them, there aren't prospects left for the next 5 years.

stormboy 47 Report post Posted January 16, 2008 I can't think of anybody in our lineup that I would replace with Hossa, not even Lils. surely you can't think he'd do worse than sammy...
stormboy 47 Report post Posted January 16, 2008 if we could sign hossa long term, i'd be arlgiht with giving up hudler, who i have been a proponent of keeping in discussion of trades for sundin, etc. i really, really don't want to lose flip. i'm not really well versed with the picks / prospects for the wings right now, but with the trades they've done in the last few years, and with them always finishing near the top of the league, they can't have a ton of up and coming talent. but, and i guess this goes without saying, if kenny could sign hossa long term and resign zetterberg, then i'd be alright with just about anything. kronwall hasn't been playing GREAT this year, but he's been better lately...and i'm not sure who you'd replace his twenty-some points and even occasional hard checking with. i feel like if we gave up kronner for hossa we'd end up playing a lot of 5-4 games...not that kronwall makes THAT huge of a difference on our blueline, but again, can we replace him with someone from the ahl who's not a liability at all? 40#1Fan 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2008 From MLIVE (this is just a portion of the actual article): http://blog.mlive.com/snapshots/2008/01/mu..._potpourri.html Detroit Red Wings defenceman Chris Chelios gave his weekly Chelios report to WCSX's JJ and Lynne this morning, and in the 7:18 clip, Chelios hopes that the Red Wings might be in a spell where they're simply tired thanks to the regular-season grind, but he's not pleased with the Wings' PK, and he feels that the only solution is working harder. Regarding Hasek coming in, Chelios says that the Wings gave up a "home run" to Hossa, they turned the puck over, and they tried to do too much individually, so they need to re-focus upon doing things as a team. He says there's no excuse to come back at home and get beat 5-1, but the points are at least going to the other conference. Regarding Marian Hossa, Chelios says that he's almost positive that the Wings' front office is looking at Hossa, among others, as a deadline acquisition. He's a finisher, he's big and strong, and many Wings had a good first half, but if he can fit in and not cost too many prospects/picks/players, he'd be a tremendous acquisition. Chelios doesn't believe that Hossa attempted to audition for a spot with the Wings on Tuesday--he's just a tremendous player;
Lady in REd 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2008 If you trade Hudler (and consider he'll probably get 1.5 - 2M next season) Samuelson @ 1.2M and Kronwall @ 3M, you have just cleared 6M in cap space for next year. Some more twisting and Hossa could be had and fit under the cap. Also, no prospects given up (provided Atlanta like this deal). Trade a 2nd rounder and a defensive prospect for Blake, and Detroit still have prospect depth a defence and their 08 1st rounder. Don't forget, like ARice said, if Atlanta wants something for Hossa: 1.) the only teams interested would be contenders. Or else why not wait and take a run at him in July. 2,) of the contenders, Detroit has the most cap room. Same goes for Blake and even more so, because he'd have to waive his no trade clause. So in both cases it's both Atlanta and LA WOULD NOT have Detroit over a barrel. Quite simply, if they want something for Hossa and Blake, they might have to take what they can (reasonable) get from a team like Detroit. Becasue no one else has the space to bite. Good idea in the first part of your post, but I'd hate to see Hudler and Kronwall go. Both great assests with tons of room for improvement. It'd be a shame to give them up and see how well they'd end up doing since they have both already proved themselves here (I feel they've only been getting better with each game- but lets omit the last 3 )

BlakChamber 8 Report post Posted January 16, 2008 I can understand reservations about not wanting Hossa because of cap concerns. But not wanting Hossa if it meant dealing Hulder or Flip or even Kronwall? To me, that makes no sense.

It's just as of now I'm not sure. He's only one player and we have good team chemistry right now, don't want to mess it up by taking out some important roles. rage 24 Report post Posted January 16, 2008 Hossa: I hope I can stay Of course he will say that. Most players do until they get traded. If he doesn't sign an extension soon, they will pretty much have to trade him. Most players don't come out and say, "Well we are looking at others team to go to come the trade deadline..." BS-PR IMO. Just saying.

Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted January 16, 2008 We need to get bigger and tougher. Then we'll have a better shot to win. That said, Hossa, despite his terrible playoffs, is too good a player to pass up on if the price isnt too steep. rick zombo made a pretty good trade proposal, picking up Hossa for the skill and Blake for the grit would be great.
