Barrie 900 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 (edited) From now till summer we will probably be hearing the Holland, Bowman, and Yzerman as new GM rumors. I'm off work today cause of the snow so I was able to watch the news conference and some analysis after. Holland was the first GM named as a possible replacement by a local sports station :puke: I really wish this would stop! But it'll probably get worse as things go along. Why would Holland leave the Wings to go to the Leafs? The Leafs are a mess. They have no current super stars and they have no young players on the team or in the minors they can build around. This is a 10+ year process, and in that time the Wings could win 2 Stanley Cups. Jimmy D even said that if the Leafs think they'll get anyone from the Wings Organization to run their team, they are dreaming in technicolor. Also, a few other things that made me laugh and go during the Leafs press conference: -When asked if the Leafs are going to blow things up and start from scratch, Richard Petty said they want to rebuild and still want to try and win now. -When asked if the Board will let Fletcher have free reign of the team, Petty said the Ownership has never got in the way of the GM. -Fletcher and Petty both said that the Leafs GM job is the jewel of GM jobs in the NHL. This team has no clue. They have no sense of reality. I've had a chance to listen to some fan reaction on the FAN590 as well, and the majority of them are saying, "Same old sh!t" and "we've heard this before". I agree, I don't think things will change in Toronto. All this will do is get the fans and media off the Organization's back for a little while. akustyk 84 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 good move but if it brings major change of fortune - we'll see. I'd rather go with that old joke: so is it this year?

12Newf 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 jim nill, steve yzerman, scottie bowman, kenny holland and even elements of the wings' scouting staff have been named on tsn. it is so funny to watch because its like MLSE is going, "hmmm the red wings win...what if we throw money at everyone in their organization and see if we can steal them away? that'll solve our problems!" brian burke, lou lamieorello and rutherford have been named too though so hopefully they'll poach off someone else. YoungGuns1340 1 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 They arent going to get anyonese head GM. They might be able to land an assistant, but none of those guys have any reason to leave their organization, especially Holland and Burker who could be looking at more stanley cups fort heir resumes
Yzerfan1999 81 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 I couldn't think of a worse scenario than the Yzerman leaving the Wings to GM the Leafs. Tell me that could and would never happen.
rage 24 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 I couldn't think of a worse scenario than the Yzerman leaving the Wings to GM the Leafs. Tell me that could and would never happen. You couldn't?? What about Holland leaving? That would really suck. I don't see either of them going, but maybe Holland since Yzerman will take over sooner or later. Maybe if we win the Cup this year, Kenny will want a new challenge so to speak. Man that would suck!!
imisssergei 0 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 QFT This will help but the MLSE is the source of all of the Leafs has other problems. It seems as long as their money continues to pour in they continue to neglect their team. There, fixed it. As for why a guy like Holland or Burke would want the GM position in Toronto. 1. It's Toronto, like it or not, it's a fantastic hockey city. Few other cities have the rich hockey tradition that Toronto does. 2. It would be a HUGE challenge to turn the Leafs around. All of the guys mentioned are competitors who thrive under pressure. 3. IF someone can turn the Leafs around, he WILL be a GOD in Toronto. Much like Scotty is here. 4. $$$$

The media there is basically a pack of liars that make crap up because it sounds good to them. How many times have we heard that Jim Nill was going to Toronto even though his contract strictly prohibits him from even talking to other teams. Toronto's biggest problem is Toronto. Fans come out in waves to watch a horrible hockey team while the execs play grab-ass while the $$$ roles in.
MacK_Attack 108 Report post Posted January 22, 2008 (edited) Firing Ferguson is fine, but the main thing is Leafs Ownership letting the new GM have full control of what happens to the team. Apparently Fletcher's two main conditions were that he have full autonomy of hockey operations while he's GM, and that he have a say in who is hired as the new GM/President. Peddie said today that the new GM will have Bryan Colangelo control of the team. The Raptors rebirth has forced their hands in that regard. This is about five years too late. I don't know that Cliff Fletcher is the answer, but he's been given the full control of the hockey team, and that's a huge step in the right direction. Cliff's his own man and he won't allow people higher up to whisper in his ear. Edited January 22, 2008 by MacK_Attack
