Matt Walker

I read that Matt Walker from St.Louis demanded a trade and they turned him down. I think that he would be a good addition if we could not get Blake or another defensemen. Also he comes at a very cheap price instead of the 6 million that Blake has on his contract, and he is a big man who can hit.

Walker sucks. He's a bad fighter, which completely takes any value he would have at all, because he's also a terrible defenseman.

Besides that, the Blues will probably move to Mexico before they make a trade with the Wings.

Not compared to our players he isn't.

Kp, I love your signature in regard to my Cory Cross comment. It'll serve as a reminder that tougness isn't necessarily always built on paper.

It's a very truthful comment that a lot of people don't understand. People look at a guy that can seem to have the credentials for that role, but really doesn't.

I remember a couple of years back people on here wanted the Wings to sign Eric Daze because he adds "grit and toughness that the Wings need". Daze may have been an imposing 6'6, 222 pounds in size, but the guy in truth plays like a major puffball. The highest amount of PIM's he got in a season in his entire career was 36, back in 2001-2002. There are players who can rack up that many in a single game, no less.

Or, just last summer, people were saying how, if the Wings re-aquired Dandenault from Montreal, their toughness issues would be resolved. Dandenault is not a bad sized guy, and he has a couple of fighting majors to his credit, but in no way should he even considered for playing the tough guy role on this team. I don't know what people were thinking when they said that.

There are numerous other guys in the NHL that are the same way: Hal Gill, Nik Antropov, Nikita Alexeev, the list goes on. I could write a book on the amount of guys that people on here have wanted the Wings to aquire going of size alone, not knowing that said player isn't really tough at all.

Ok so let's recap.

1) Walker demands a trade, and is turned down. Which means St. Louis doesn't want to trade him.

2) We are St. Louis's division rival, so trading with us would be highly unlikely, especially since they are playoff bound.

(Does anyone know the last time the Wings even traded with the Blues? If ever?)

3) I wouldn't want Walker either, he's got good size, but he's has a whopping ONE point this season. I'd rather have a steady d-man who could also play the 2nd PP unit, which Blake can do.

The Blues arent going to trade with us so its a moot point, but Salvador would be the guy. I recall seeing a rumor saying he might be moved as he'll be a FA.

i'd rather have scott,...don't know if that's his brother or not. But the winger from carolina CAN fight, and CAN score.

No they're not related. But I would love to see Scotty as a Wing. He was one of my favorite players with the Preds

Contrary to what some have said in this thread, Walker is a decent fighter.

And he's only a so-so defenseman. A #5 or 6 guy at best.

He usually gets inserted into the lineup if Murray expects a rough game or if he just wants to shake things up.

Walker played pretty good for a while earlier this year...but nothing to write home about.

If the Wings want him...they should make an offer. I am sure the Blues would give him to you guys.

And don't look for the Blues to trade Salvador. He's been the Blues best defenseman this year.

Jackman seems to be wanting 4-5 million per and is in the last year of a one year contract. That's too much money for him...so he could be on his way out.

But the Blues would never trade with Detroit, unless the Wings really overpaid.

Matt Walker is not a bad defenseman, he can play 3rd pairing minutes on any team. A bit of an old school guy, stay at home, punishes in front of the net and along the boards, but isn't the greatest skater. I'm amazed people have critiqued his fighting ability, he is an excellent fighter. He may not win any of his fights decisively but that is because he takes on the league's finest. He is a legit light heavyweight and could probably hang with anyone in the NHL aside from the top 5. I don't expect the Wings to make a move for him but he is my ideal 3rd pairing defenseman, especially to play alongside Brett Lebda.

I've always been a fan of throwback defensemen like Matt Walker, Sean O'Donnell, Jim Vandermeer, Brendan Witt, etc.

EDIT: and he is only 28

I'd take those other players you mentioned before Walker.

I'm not a big Matt Walker fan, but then again, maybe you're right about his fighting. He does take on some of the league's better fighters, so that might not be why he wins.

Still, the Wings have a better chance of getting Kovalchuk for Samuelsson straight up than making a trade with the Blues. I don't think it's even worth discussing, because with the Blues in the playoff race, do you really think they'll make a trade with a division rival? No way will they do that.

The only way Walker ever plays for the Wings is if he signs here via UFA, or is traded here by some other team, if he signs somewhere else. Of course, all of this will come to pass after Holland is no longer GM because... well... you know... :D

I also feel Walker is a good fighter. One of the top light heavyweights for sure, and is capable of beating many heavies.
