timothy1997 0 Report post Posted August 13, 2008 just got back from tonight's tigers game. Great seats with them being 4 rows back right in upper deck. Got to see all the action right in front of me. What a complete bullpen meltdown. Miner pitched outstanding and the Tigers should have won that game. Up 4-1 entering the 7th, you gotta go to your shutdown relievers. Problem is the Tigers don't have any. I officially have had it with this team and Zumaya tonight. Going to tonight's Tigers game was the only reason why I still watched and paid any interest in the Tigers. I am done now.
mannysBETTER3434 1 Report post Posted August 13, 2008 I thought it was interesting the Tigers signed Freddy Garcia to a minor league deal. It could be a good gamble if he ever gets healthy , and pitches like he did on the Sox. The reason I say it is interesting is because I remember reading when Seattle traded Guilen to the Tigers they said they were tired of how much Garcia/Guilen were party animals together. Will the party boys get reunited?
GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted August 13, 2008 I'd love to see the Garcia signing work out as well. Hell, anything to get Nate Robertson out of the rotation works for me. However, it doesn't appear very promising for Garcia at this point - his fastball was clocked at 85-87 MPH when he threw for MLB scouts. Not to mention, he was awful for the Phillies before his injury last season. Garcia is going to get rocked worse than Robertson if his velocity doesn't improve in the minor leagues. It's a low-risk move and certainly worth the chance. The Tigers need all the pitching help they can get.
dallas27 7 Report post Posted August 13, 2008 Sure, Pudge played a role in the trade. He was pissed when Leyland decided to start splitting his playing time with a scrub like Inge. I don't blame him for wanting the hell out to go to a team where he can start every night. Farnsworth is a free agent at season's end too. I doubt Pudge would have been back next season, but who is to say Farnsworth will be or the Tigers will even want him back? The Tigers are not a better team now than they were a week ago. I've seen Farnsworth's stats. It doesn't bring Pudge back or the value he brought to the team, which far exceeded Farnsworth's. Why would you suggest re-signing Farnsworth for cheap if he keeps pitching the way he has so far in Detroit? Yes, let's fix our bullpen by keeping a guy that blows games in the same fashion as Jones and Rodney. That makes a ton of sense. Why would you reward a player for being counter-productive? Farnsworth hasn't pitched like he did with the Yankees, so it makes the trade even worse at this point. Farnsworth has been all hype in his career for throwing hard with minimal results. He has a 4.45 career ERA, has blown more saves than he actually saved (30-27). For the immediate bullpen help he was supposed to provide to the Tigers, well the stats don't lie. He's already blown two leads in three appearances, given up three homeruns, and played a major role in costing the Tigers two wins in the standings. It was a bad trade by Dombrowski, which is getting common lately. Thanks Captain Obvious, it's quite easy to analyze the trade after a couple outtings of horrible pitching. But during the last few weeks in New York Farnsworth was putting up some damn impressive numbers, numbers a lot better than what the Tigers had in their bullpen Having Pudge right now means nothing the way the bullpen is pitching. He can't go out on the mound and pitch to himself. Re-signing Farnsworth doesn't seem like a wise option or an option at all and they should waive or release every single person in the bullpen sans Bobby Seay. Which is really, really bad when you think about him being your best option in the bullpen.

If Farnsworth was brought in for immediate bullpen help, then how long is his grace period before I can analyze if the trade was truly worth it? Maybe the bad outings were just that and Farnsworth will pitch well the remainder of the regular season, but for what DD and Leyland wanted Farnsworth for, the trade has by all means failed already. I'm probably being a little harsh on Farnsworth, but if the Tigers were willing to trade Pudge Rodriguez for him, he sure as hell better perform better than he has. GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted September 1, 2008 Damn I miss Pudge. Hey, at least we still have Inge. Glad to see Tiger fans give Pudge a very well-deserved standing ovation today.

GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted September 2, 2008 Inge has been rolling of late, and what has pudge done in NY? hit .203... Rolling in what way? I don't think Inge has been on a roll, even for his lousy hitting standards. To prove the point further, here are some stats: Brandon Inge had a batting average of .200 for the month of August. Pudge was traded on July 30th, so even since that time Pudge still had a higher batting average than Inge did in August. Inge went into the month of August with a .228 batting average. Pudge left the Tigers batting .296, and hit .358 in the month of July. The Tigers basically traded away Pudge for another reliever that blows games, and left the starting catching position to a guy that can't hit for anything. Again, where is the evidence to show this "roll" Inge has been on? Brandon Inge plays a terrific third base, but he is not an everyday player in the major leagues, especially as a catcher. I am praying Dusty Ryan gets some playing time in September and wins the job next year at spring training. I have no clue why anyone in the Tigers organization thinks Brandon Inge should be the starting catcher.

GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted September 17, 2008 Kyle Farnsworth is garbage. The guy is a disaster every time he pitches. I would pay him not to come back to the Tigers next season.

GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted September 18, 2008 (edited) 3 straight games that the bullpen blows it. release everyone except seay and get a whole new pen for next year. this is freeking ridiculous. DD has to make numerous significant moves this offseason in the pen, i can't stand this s*** anymore Absolutely. 100% agree. This is really sad, but a true story: I was watching the Tigers on Tuesday night and going into the bottom of the 9th they were ahead 4-2. I knew Rodney would come in and "try" to pitch for the save. I thought to myself "I know exactly how this is going to end" - we have seen it from the bullpen far too many times this season. To no surprise, I checked the box score and hey Rodney didn't get one frickin out and the Tigers lost 5-4. It is so pathetic when you expect the bullpen to blow the game. Seay is the only one worth keeping. Farnsworth needs to get the hell out of Detroit, and Rodney is a trainwreck. I haven't looked at available free agent relievers, besides knowing that K-Rod is going to test the market. It's not like the Tigers have any prospects left to fill the void, so help will have to come via free agency or a trade. It's just a hunch, but I think either Maggs and/or Guillen will be dealt in the off-season. Edited September 18, 2008 by GoWings1905
rwfan007 18 Report post Posted September 18, 2008 I think Guillen has found himself on his way out. He has been bounced around 3 infield positions this season and has not found his spot at any of them. Unless they keep him as a DH, I don't think I would like to see him back. He is always nursing something, so I think it is time to sever ties and bring up someone like Hessman who can play 3B. Maybe Dusty has earned his spot at C and they can move Inge back to 3rd. Anyone who watches Inge plays knows that he is infinitely more comfortable and effective at 3rd. Next season we will get Bondo back, hopefully Freddy will stay, Justin was hopefully plagued this season by an atrocious bullpen, Kenny has been ineffective this year, hopefully he is done, Nate... I don't know what to think about him, Dontrelle I can't really make any judgments as I haven't seen him hardly at all this year, Zach could be fit into the rotation, Armando has earned a spot next year. The offense looks good besides Sheff, and I don't know what they will decide to do with Guillen. The only gaping hole is obviously the pen. Grandy has had a terrific season despite his early injury. Polly is Polly. Maggs is solid, knocking at 100 RBIs again, Cabby started slow but has really taken off and I think he will boom next season, Thames has his moments though he might be best suited as a DH, Joyce needs to develop a little more, Rayburn is a good utility guy, Renteria should be a 1 year and gone flop, Santiago is a fantastic fielder who will hit .300 in limited at bats, Inge will never win any batting titles, but he is really irreplaceable on this team. The rookies like Hessman, Joyce, and Larish need a little more development time, but Hessman might me the most major league ready. So that is my assessment of the team this year. rwfan007 18 Report post Posted September 20, 2008 yeah, I got nothing.... what a waste. Poor Galarraga, he has been in line for his 13th win for a while, but the pen keeps blowing it. This is going to be a long offseason. Go Wings!
Hockeytown0001 7,652 Report post Posted September 22, 2008 Gotta love how Sheff keeps going after the Indians in the media. Seriously guys, grow up.
GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted September 22, 2008 (edited) Gotta love how Sheff keeps going after the Indians in the media. Seriously guys, grow up. Sheff is a whiner, punk, and an ass - always has been and always will be. I will never like or cheer for Sheffield in a Tigers uniform. I was hoping Carmona would whoop the s*** out of Sheff. Instead of bitching about not playing the outfield, and going after opposing players through the media, shouldn't Sheff be more concerned with his .220 batting average? It's a shame Leyland still plays the bum every night, and he is under contract next season. I am done with the Tigers for the year - too disappointing and predictable. If the players on the team have clearly given up, then I don't care anymore either. The Royals are going to sweep the Tigers this week at Comerica, and we are looking at a last place team. Pitching and defense win championships DD; not an inflated payroll of old, washed-up, overpaid players. Edited September 22, 2008 by GoWings1905
betterREDthandead 58 Report post Posted September 24, 2008 Something will happen this year that I haven't seen since 5th grade and that has never happened in the wild-card era: the baseball playoffs without the New York Yankees. Sweet.

GoWings1905 2,694 Report post Posted September 24, 2008 I would take Jonesy over Rodney every day of the week. DD has to find a closer this winter - Rodney is clearly not capable in that role (or any other).

rwfan007 18 Report post Posted September 29, 2008 pitching was a large part of the problem this season, so some changes needed to be made. with rollercoaster gone and a new pitching coach coming in, we can only hope for significant upgrades in the players as well. i think next season is going to be completely different. on a side note, that was the first series win we've had in a long long time, and against the Rays to boot!
