Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted February 15, 2008 Holland, Just stay pat. We dont need anyone. But if you do get someone, Look at TB for CG The Wings will go nowhere with their current roster. I know my extreme lack of faith will probably piss some people off, but seriously. They have no secondary scoring at all. I mean, when Babcock is now going to be relying on Franzen (who is NOT a top 6 forward) for that role, you can tell things are bad. Plus, Kronwall seems like he's still a long time from coming back, and I will be extremely... let's say disappointed (but I could use a lot of other words as well) if Meech is getting regular minutes in the playoffs. datsyukismyfriend 4 Report post Posted February 15, 2008 i'm not counting on any blockbuster moves. there's just not much out there that's really doable. but i concur, to be a true threat in the playoffs, we're going to need some scoring. we don't really have a second line. we have a first, two thirds, and a forth. we basically have three top six forwards on this team (and without z and dats homer wouldn't be a top six so we really have 2). but we'd have to give up an awful lot to acquire anybody worth while up front. so i'm not holding my breath. to really be a front runner we're going to need somebody fast and strong who can score (probably somebody big and strong and fast on d as well). we don't really have an answer right now when teams forecheck us hard and push us to the outside. when teams let us play the finesse game we tear them apart, but when teams don't let us play our game, we don't have an answer. partly because we don't really have the personnel to play the gritty offensive game and we definitely don't have the personnel to play a dump and chase (which is ultimately what we need at least some of when teams push us to the outside and don't let us gain the zone). anyway, to make a long story short, the wings are good, but as they are, they're a little one dimensional in their approach. that coupled with inconsistent and unbalanced scoring makes stanley look unlikely (not that it's ever likely, but...) Blood On The Ice 15 Report post Posted February 15, 2008 (edited) I didn't think Hossa was available. Weren't the Thrashers trying to sign him to a long-term deal? The thrashers did offer a contract, but Hossa turned it down. Something like 7 million yr. Hossa basically wants out of Atlanta. I agree with the first part. Franzen is a great third liner who's being expected to do too much. I'm also not thrilled with their lack of power play production. Any time Samuelson is your second point man on the power play, you've got problems. Now, we just need to hope Kenny and Co. can make a splash at the deadline. CenterIce 83 Report post Posted February 15, 2008 Look's like Kronner is coming back on Sunday, that's not that long of a time is it? Kronner's return Well, in the article, this is what Holland said, "In Nik Kronwall's case, he's skating. I think he's still probably - we don't have a definitive date, but certainly think in the next two weeks, give or take a few days, he'll be back in our lineup." Zion 93 Report post Posted February 15, 2008 Here's the real question: How much are the Wings willing to give up for a better shot at THIS YEAR'S Cup?
rick zombo 3,739 Report post Posted February 15, 2008 The thing I like about Ken is that he's realistic. He won't do anything crazy. This current Wings roster is in no way assured of winning the Stanley Cup. But to say that they have absolutely NO CHANCE of winning is a bit of a knee-jerk. My only criticism of Holland is, that with the extra 5M he had coming out of the summer, he should have spent it in the summer on one or two UFAs. Even if it meant overpayment for one year contracts. He said he was hanging on to the cap space for the deadline, but, like other years, the asking prices for the kind of players the Wings (and every other contender) need - namely a scoring winger and top four D-man, are through the roof. Dabura 12,232 Report post Posted February 15, 2008 I agree that Ken generally comes off as a very reasonable guy. But this "eye on the future" business is bordering on masochistic.
Opie 308 Report post Posted February 15, 2008 He is trying to build team that will be strong for years to come, otherwise known as his legacy. If he can build a dynasty (bad word choice) in the salary cap era and win two or three championships in 7-10 years within the salary cap he and this org will be forever remember in NHL lore. Also, maybe just maybe, the I's have told him, we want a winner long term. Who knows but like others have said I would rather root for a winner long term than root for a team like the B's that always seems to screw it up some how, or like the Thrash that were having a fire sale. Yeah I want to win a cup, but at least I can look at my bro -in law (leafs fan) and say I root for a winning team not a team that just can't get it right. FinRedWing 172 Report post Posted February 15, 2008 No one's commenting this : I'm expecting it's going to be Dom, but certainly Chris Osgood really has come back to Detroit and he's accepted the role of being the number two guy. He's built a relationship up with Dom and I think he's comfortable that Dom's the guy. Once I read it last night I thought a goalie war would be inevitable. The thing I like about Ken is that he's realistic. He won't do anything crazy. This current Wings roster is in no way assured of winning the Stanley Cup. Opie 308 Report post Posted February 15, 2008 Picking up a guy like Hossa right now...having a good team for the next seven years....These things don't have to be mutually exclusive. What you mean they could talk to him and find out if he is willing to take 7 mil for 5 years to be on a winner instead of 8-9mil for 7 years on a team that could be a winner this year and a sucky team next year. Surely you jest!!! /sarcasm!!
