KronwallCRUNCH 5 Report post Posted February 17, 2008 When the Wings were getting PWND 3-0 in the first period, where was he? He was on the ice, but wasn't doing any of the things that he should have been to fire up his team. Same with today against the Stars- he looks like Samuelsson, but less effective out there- if that's even possible. At least Sammy has a shot. Send Downey somewhere, as long as it's not on to the ice.

Send Downey somewhere, as long as it's not on to the ice. Downey was trying to start s*** yesterday against the Bluejackets but with no Shelley and no Boll there is no one for him to fight and he's not going to pick up an instigator penalty and put his team on the PK. Today, same deal, without Winchester and Barch in the line up there is no one for Downey to fight. Having the upperhand in the fisticuffs department is not necessarily a bad thing to just have if necessary, when he was on the ice he did what he could on the forecheck. The score was 1-0 today, and you think the problem is Downey?

Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted February 17, 2008 Columbus and Dallas had no willing combatents in there line-up. Downey is relied on to hit and fight, he has this season. Sammy? What shot? The one that misses the net, takes out Cleary, or hits the goalie in the chest? He is tied with Kopecky and Meech for biggest "plug" on the team right now. We didnt lose because we couldnt generate energy today, we lost because we cant create offence. Plus, when Babs is giving Downey 2-3 minutes of ice a night, what do you expect him to do?? Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted February 18, 2008 Downey didn't have anyone to fight in either game. Once I learned Dallas scratched both Barch and Winchester, I turned it off and didn't watch. And thank God I did, because judging by the outcome, the game really sucked.

And thank God I did, because judging by the outcome, the game really sucked. No, it wasn't that bad. The wings didn't play perfect, but they stepped it up and it was much better than last week. It was definitely a huge step forward. They just couldn't score...at all.
Kp-Wings 3 Report post Posted February 18, 2008 I would of liked to see him go at it with Ott. That would of been fun to watch. Ott is a pansy. The only thing he'd fight is either a speck of dust, or Jiri Hudler.
russianswede919293 95 Report post Posted February 18, 2008 In reality Downey didn't do his job today. His job is to create energy with the small amount of ice time that he gets, and he didn't do that today. He made a few bad defensive plays and he really didn't bring any energy to his shifts, that is his only job, create energy, which he didn't.
LidsFan 68 Report post Posted February 18, 2008 I don't like Ott, that is why I was hoping that he would drop the gloves with Downey, or Hudler , Lilja, anyone on the team would of been fine with me.

I guess if you want to be vague about player's roles then no forward did their "job" tonight because we didn't score any goals, neither did Lidstrom, Lebda, and Meech because they are known to contribute offensively

Opie 308 Report post Posted February 18, 2008 OK so I know the result that my post will receive but here it goes anyways. I get s*** on for supporting (different than liking or loving) Sammy as a viable (not desired) option for where he plays. Yet some one comments on the fact that yesterday Downey did nothing and hasn't in about a week and they are blasphemers. I understand he is not there to score or make pretty passes, however after saying that lets look at what some others thought his expectations were: 1. Fight 2. Hit Those are the two expectations directly referred to by the OP. Neither of which he has done with any real effect on the game in a long time. (The fight against Parros actually seemed to drop the energy at first and fire up the ducks). 3. Protect the star players from getting hurt, specifically mentioned in posts this pre-season was Z's back. Well we all see how that worked out. Now I am not saying he is a waste on the ice and should be beheaded like some people call for with Sammy(a little poetic license), but he hasn't provide any positives for this team in about a week and a half. Oddly enough it is about the same time that Osgood, has been struggling. I bring that up because look at the trade, bench, send down, castrate Osgood threads. Osgood is being castrated on other threads, Hudler is bashed relentlessly, Flip is torn a part, Ralf, Lilja, Lebda, Sammy, Drake and others I could go on. But some how Downey is immune from having doing his job lately, hell Drake has played with more of an edge recently. But some how Downey, because he is the coveted wing's "enforcer", gets to escape responsibility. New Flash fans THE WHOLE TEAM IS PLAYING BADLY RIGHT NOW!!! Including the recently turn over prone Lidstrom. Just a couple of points I wanted to note: -No one in the line up would fight him, well that is funny because for some one that runs their mouth like Ott was doing he looked awfully interested in being a tough guy, yapping at Lids, Maltby and others through out the game. If he doesn't want to drop the gloves than Downey should have made him remember why and shut his pie hole. -Minutes, are you serious, I could have told you from the beginning of the season this guy would average 4 mins a game and I think I did, you can't fault Huds for not scoring in the same amount of minutes and then excuse Downey because he only played so many minutes. -Didn't lose because of energy, but all along this journey people have said that Energy (Downey's job) can be created by a fight or a big hit and will then lead to goals. But now that some one says Downey is not doing his job the team lost because of offense and it had nothing to do with lack of energy. Well if lack of energy or an energy boost has no outcome on the game what the hell good is Downey? Now having said that: I do not believe Downey lost the game nor do I believe he is the only one not doing their job. Right now it looks like Dats and Z are the only ones playing up to their level. Z's back slows him down, but there were times last night where he had a scowl on his face and looked determined to make a difference. The rest of the team needs to pick it back up. I think lids needs a couple of games off, unfortunately with the state the D is in right now Babs can not afford to do that. Downey is not doing his job so therefore this thread is not stupid, however if you wanted to start a thread for every player on this team not doing their job there would be a thread for every player. (We are close but not there yet) But I do love how certain players (IE: Downey, Maltby, Draper, Lids (deservedly so)) remain untouchable on this board yet others (IE:Sammy, Huds, Kopecky, Lilja) can have a great game and be berated for something that happened last week, last month, or even last season! Oh my goodness, a logical post about Aaron Downey!!! That is the point I was trying to make earlier but I did not put it in as many great words. Downey's job is energy, he hasn't done it. Ellis could bring energy tonight since he wants to earn some playing time. Babs should play Ellis instead of Downey tonight. People on the board are so in love with the fact that Aaron Downey is an enforcer that he can do no wrong in anyone's eyes here, and should be given ice time every game. He is a part time enforcer that floats from team to team as they realize they can get better enforcers, or don't need one. There is a reason for that. Don't get me wrong I like Downey, but he is not as wonderful as LGWers think he is. Your point on how Hudler is bashed for not scoring in the same amount of minutes that Downey didn't fight in proves that people love Downey blindly and is a point I think is 100% valid. Detroit # 1 Fan 2,204 Report post Posted February 18, 2008 So, from those 2 posts, I gather we shouldnt rag on Hudler and Samuelson because they have been playing "well". But we should rag on Downey because he didnt fight with someone. ******* newsflash, no one on Dallas nor Columbus were gonna throw down with Downey. He cant control who the other team dresses, but Sammy and Hudler sure as hell can control how many goals they score, it's just too bad there both terrible at it. If we dare bash the almighty Mikeal Samuelsson, we're looked at as cave goblins that should be burned at the stake. Even though he's single-handingly the worst player on the Wings (next to Hudler of course), and does absolutley nothing. I swear, Lang pulled his weight around here more when he was a Wing, so that really says something in itself.

Opie 308 Report post Posted February 18, 2008 I would have to assume you are referring to my post when you say So, from those 2 posts, I gather we shouldnt rag on Hudler and Samuelson because they have been playing "well". When if you read my post (I know it is long and I did use big words) I said everyone on the team is playing badly, yet some people (Downey, Maltby, etc..) get to skate on the responsibility. Listen, it is hockey, Cleary fought Pronger for Christ's sake, you mean to tell me that Downey couldn't find a single player on the ice to go toe to toe with. When some of you guys told me (specifically) in the pre season that this was exactly what Downey's role was on the team. To bring energy to a flat team and that would result in wins. When I brought up his stats I was told it goes way beyond the stat sheet, he brings energy with his hits and his fights. That if he didn't score he could still turn the game around. I AM NOT BASHING DOWNEY IN THIS THREAD, I was simply pointing out that Downey gets a free pass because he is the coveted enforcer. He as much as Lids, Drake, Dats, Z, ...... (I could list the whole roster but don't want to) are responsible for the recent losses. They are all playing like crap. And seriously Detroit #1 do you really think anyone has complete control over scoring or not, because if any one player really did have control over their ability to score wouldn't we at least see some one who shoots at a 100% ratio. I mean some one out there has to be arrogant enough to say, "Hey why not score on all of my shots." Sammy, Huds, Kopecky, Draper, Maltby, Downey, Flip, Homer, etc. are not Dats and Z and people need to have different standards for their success. Much like you have a different set off standards for Downey, because he plays a different role, you must also have different expectations of Huds and Sammy. But I have multiple times pointed out why Downey should get some off the blame, and even though I have said Sammy and Huds are to blame as well, could you please tell me why it is that Downey is any less responsible for the loss, well besides ice time, which really only explains Sammy!
